LG is taking the wraps off a few new smartphones this week, including the LG Stylus 2 Plus with a 5.7 inch display, a stylus, and a fingerprint scanner, and the LG X Power with a smaller screen, but a bigger battery.

There’s also a new phone called the LG X Style which, honestly, doesn’t seem to have any particularly special features.

Website for models can be sued for not warning users about rapists

Communications Decency Act doesn’t immunize Modelmayhem.com from legal liability.

A federal appeals court is reviving a lawsuit targeting a website for models because the site did not warn users that there were rapists reading the site in search of their next victim. The Communications Decency Act (CDA), the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday, did not immunize the website Modelmayhem.com from a suit brought by an aspiring model who said she was drugged, raped, and filmed by two men during a phony 2011 audition.

Craigslist, eBay, Facebook, and other online companies had told the court (PDF) that such a ruling would have a chilling effect on the Web. In a court filing, they said that the CDA shields website operators "from the risks, burdens, and uncertainty of lawsuits that would hold them liable for hosting or facilitating online exchanges of third-party information that may result in harm."

But the federal appeals court, which issued a similar ruling in 2014 but set it aside to rehear the case again, wasn't buying the argument. The CDA, one of the foundational laws that has allowed the Internet to flourish, protects online outlets from legal liability for the content that third parties publish on it, the court noted. But here, the owner of the website, Internet Brands, had obtained knowledge that there were rapists who trolled the site for women, pretended they were agents, and raped and filmed the women who thought they were going for a job interview, the court ruled.

Google Fiber customers get Google Cast functionality (no Chromecast required)

Google Fiber customers get Google Cast functionality (no Chromecast required)

Google’s Chromecast may be one of the smallest, cheapest media streaming devices available. But you know what’s even cheaper than a $35 Chromecast? Using hardware that may already be in your home.

And soon that’s exactly what Google Fiber customers will be able to do, because Google has announced that it’s bringing Google Cast functionality to Fiber TV boxes through a software update.

That means folks who subscribe to Google Fiber for internet and/or TV service will also be able to stream internet content to a TV while using a phone as a remote control.

Microsoft pushes Windows 10 Holographic as the one-stop option for VR and AR

The HoloLens’ operating system will be available for other hardware.

Microsoft's HoloLens holographic headset runs a special version of Windows 10, Windows Holographic. At Computex today, the company announced that Windows Holographic is coming to more than just the HoloLens: Microsoft wants it to be available for all virtual reality and augmented reality/mixed reality systems, from the tethered, fully immersive virtual reality headsets already on the market, to a new generation of untethered HoloLens-like devices.

Windows Holographic builds on the common Windows platform—the NT kernel, the Windows Store, the Edge browser, and the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) APIs—that is collectively called OneCore. To this, it adds a range of components designed for mixed-reality computing—things like a custom shell; human-interaction systems that integrate voice, gaze, and hand gestures; and spatial mapping to build models of the world around you—along with specific APIs to use these capabilities in software, extending the core UWP platform.

Today's announcement shows Microsoft's intent to develop Windows Holographic into a broader platform still, running not just on Microsoft's own hardware, but also that of third parties. With PC-based virtual reality currently split awkwardly between the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets—a split that's enforced by DRM—an attempt to bridge the gap and unify the hardware can only be a good thing. Bringing AR into the mix is also sensible; AR and VR have areas of significant overlap (such as spatial mapping and gestural control), such that it doesn't seem sensible to reinvent the wheel for each approach.

IDC predicts smartphone growth to slow to 3.1 percent in 2016

IDC predicts smartphone growth to slow to 3.1 percent in 2016

Smartphone shipments have skyrocketed in recent years, as a growing number of new customers in developed and emerging markets have been buying their first phones. But there aren’t as many first-time buyers as there used to be, and research firm IDC projects that smartphone growth will slow to just 3.1 percent in 2016.

If the forecast is correct, that’s still a lot of phones: as many as 1.48 billion phones would ship this year.

Xiaomi’s path to the West gets a little easier with Microsoft patent deal

Xiaomi’s phones get Microsoft apps and one less legal enemy.

The Xiaomi Mi 5.

Xiaomi and Microsoft have announced a deal that will move the companies a little closer together, while giving Xiaomi a slightly less treacherous path for expansion into Western markets. Xiaomi is buying some Microsoft patents, and the two companies have inked a cross-licensing deal for patents, and, like many vendors, Xiaomi is committing to bundle Microsoft apps on its Android phones. Wang Xiang, senior vice president at Xiaomi, describes the deal as "a very big collaboration agreement between the two companies."

The most surprising part of the announcement is that Xiaomi is buying (not licensing) 1,500 patents from Microsoft. Reuters notes that the patents include "voice communications, multimedia and cloud computing." Microsoft licenses its computing patents to most Android OEMs, and the deal often includes bundling Microsoft apps with future devices. Outright sales of some of the patents has not happened previously, however.

The app bundling part of the deal seems pretty standard for these agreements. The press release notes that, starting in September, "Xiaomi Android devices, including Mi 5, Mi Max, Mi 4s, Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3, will come pre-installed with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Skype applications."

HBO Cracks Down on Game of Thrones ‘Porn’ Piracy

HBO is going all out to limit Game of Thrones piracy on the Internet and is not stopping at full episodes. To protect some of its hottest properties the company confirmed that it’s eying Pornhub for pirated nude clips and compilations, which are in popular demand.

khaleesiAs one of its ‘hottest’ properties, HBO has become very protective of Game of Thrones.

In recent weeks thousands of pirates have received warnings in their mailboxes, and the company is also fervently trying to take down links to pirated copies of the show, with some success.

Besides targeting full copies of episodes, HBO also appears to have an eye on unauthorized compilations that focus on scenes without costumes, which are quite a common occurrence.

Sites such as Pornhub list thousands of clips of Khaleesi, Margaery Tyrell, Melisandre and others, fully uncovered. While this isn’t a new trend HBO now says that it’s taking action in response.

“HBO is aware of the issue and is in the process of getting material taken down from Pornhub,” the company said in a statement.

A quick search revealed that a lot of compromising material is still readily available, but some videos have indeed been removed. This includes the Daenerys Targaryen compilation video below.

Daenerys Targaryen’s compilation video is gone

Since the videos are uploaded by Pornhub users the site itself enjoys safe harbor protection. This means that there’s little else HBO can do other than issue regular takedown requests to protect their assets.

That said, Pornhub is well-aware of the interest in Game of Thrones. In an ‘insights‘ article last month the site analized various trends. Among other things it reported a massive spike in GoT searches before this year’s season premiere.

Popular search terms include “sex scene,” “khaleesi,” “boobs,” “nude” and “parody” while further analysis revealed that Emilia Clarke (Khaleesi) was also by far the most popular Game of Thrones actress on the porn site.

Of course HBO has the right to remove the infringing footage, but the company has reportedly targeted various porn parodies as well. These can in theory be contested, but thus far we haven’t seen any signs of this.

Interestingly, HBO is not the only company that’s worried about having their brand on prominent display at the porn site. A few days ago several users reported that Blizzard began cracking down on Overwatch inspired porn on Pornhub as well.

Whether HBO’s actions will be good enough to keep GoT nude videos from spreading has yet to be seen. Once something’s on the Internet, it’s generally pretty hard to take down, and highlighting the problem may even have an adverse effect.

T-Mobile beats AT&T and Verizon in customer service ratings

Competition is better for customers than duopolies.

T-Mobile USA leads the four major wireless carriers in customer satisfaction, having moved ahead of AT&T and Verizon Wireless in the past year, according to an American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) report released today.

Wireless carriers overall outperformed home Internet and subscription TV providers, a reflection of the greater competition in the mobile industry. Internet service and pay-TV companies ranked poorly in the latest ACSI report, just as they did in another recent customer survey. “Innovation tends to be strongest in markets with multiple companies vying for consumer preference,” ACSI founder and Chairman Claes Fornell said in a press release. “There are numerous wireless carriers and plenty of different cell phones to choose from. The same is not true for pay TV and ISPs, where consumers are usually beholden to a duopoly.”

T-Mobile scored a 74 on the ACSI's 100-point scale, up from 70 last year, while AT&T and Verizon each scored 71. Verizon's score was unchanged, while AT&T rose one point since 2015. Sprint improved its rating from 65 to 70 in the past year. While T-Mobile was first among the four biggest carriers, TracFone Wireless beat all the major wireless companies with a score of 75.
