Google will keep "nearly all" of its workforce—around 200,000 employees and contractors—working from home for another year, The Wall Street Journal has reported. Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly made the decision last week.
The long timeline gives more certainty for Googlers who are making school and housing decisions for the coming academic year. Previously Google workers were due back in the office in January.
Companies across Silicon Valley—and across the broader US economy—have been keeping their offices closed longer as the severity of the coronavirus pandemic becomes more clear.

Qualcomm is calling it the “World’s fastest commercial charging solution.”
Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 is out. Here are the slides.
In the constantly incremental march of technology, it's not often you get to call something "revolutionary," but Qualcomm's Quick Charge 5 just might be that. The new quick-charging scheme promises to fully charge your phone in just 15 minutes and go from zero to 50 percent charge in five minutes. When the battery is under 50 percent, it will go up one percentage point every six seconds. Qualcomm is calling it the "World's fastest commercial charging solution," and it will probably change how you charge your phone.
Qualcomm's eye-popping numbers are based on a 4500mAh battery with a stacked cell configuration (called "2S" and "2SnP" in the slides), allowing it to pump 50W into each cell, for a total of 100W of charging power. Qualcomm says the dual-cell battery architecture helps with charging efficiency, which is 70-percent higher and 10°C cooler than Quick Charge 4 (which is, admittedly, a three-year-old standard.)
Quick Charge 5 will also support USB-PD, so it should be able to charge even larger electronics at full speed. Qualcomm makes a big deal out of the branding, but really, as a USB-PD Programmable Power Supply (PPS) device, it should be able to negotiate the correct power and charge many non-Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 devices at top speed. There's actually nothing limiting this to a USB cable either. Wireless quick charging is also supported.

Unused designs for Mario, Pokemon, Star Fox, and more see the light of day.
Footage from "Super Donkey," a previously unseen prototype included in the recent Nintendo "Gigaleak."
A massive leak of apparent Nintendo source code is giving gamers a rare, unauthorized look at Nintendo's development process dating back to the Super NES era.
The massive trove of files, first posted to 4chan Friday and quickly dubbed the "Gigaleak" by the community, includes compilable code and assets for Super NES, Game Boy, and N64 games in the Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, F-Zero, and Pokemon series. Hidden among that code is a bevy of pre-release art and sound files that have never seen the light of day, as well as fully playable prototype versions of some games.
Nintendo has not responded to a request for comment, but the sheer size and complexity of the leak points to its authenticity—faking this much data in a believable (and workable) way would just be an incredible amount of work. Star Fox developer Dylan Cuthbert has also publicly confirmed the authenticity of an early Star Fox 2 CAD tool included in the leak. And many of the assets in the leak also match images previously seen in magazine previews, suggesting either authenticity or an incredible level of attention to detail among the leakers.

Less than a week since opening day, MLB season is already derailed by COVID-19.

UPDATE, July 28: The Miami Marlins have officially paused their season for a week, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday, as at least three additional players and coaches for the team tested positive for COVID-19. The team will not play again until at least Sunday (August 2).
The three-game series scheduled this week between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies has also been postponed "out of an abundance of caution," MLB said.
"The difficult circumstances of one Club reinforce the vital need to be diligent with the protocols in all ways, both on and off the field," MLB added in its press release. "The realities of the virus still loom large, and we must operate with that in mind every day. We are confident that Clubs and players will act appropriately, for themselves and others, and the data provides reason to believe that the protocols can work effectively."
