Brazil hits 80,000 deaths as more leaders test positive for COVID-19

Brazil is second only to the US in counts of cases and deaths.

Two more high-ranking government officials in Brazil have tested positive for COVID-19 as the country’s epidemic exceeded the grim milestone of 80,000 deaths—a toll second only to deaths in the US.

Earlier this month, Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro announced he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Bolsonaro has consistently downplayed the threat of COVID-19, referring to it as a “little flu” and urging local leaders to lift restrictions aimed at reducing spread of the disease. Prior to testing positive, Bolsonaro had been seen in public appearances amid crowds of people, sometimes shaking hands and not wearing a mask.

Now, Citizenship Minister Onyx Lorenzoni, a close ally of Bolsonaro, and Education Minister Milton Ribeiro each announced on social media that they have also tested positive. Brazil’s national security adviser, Augusto Heleno, and the minister of mines and energy, Bento Albuquerque, had previously reported testing positive, according to NPR.

Ford’s electric car engineers go crazy with 1,400hp Mustang Mach-E

This one-off EV features seven electric motors and 2,300lbs of downforce.

Two weeks ago, a video hit YouTube showing a very loud, very fast electric vehicle testing somewhere in North Carolina. Debate raged about whether this was actual spy footage or guerrilla marketing from Ford's PR department, since the EV bore a lot of resemblance to the forthcoming Mustang Mach-E. That doubt was cleared up on Tuesday, when the Blue Oval revealed the one-off EV in question. It's called the Mustang Mach-E 1400, and it's utterly bonkers.

Readers with good memories might remember that back in April, we got news of a 1,400 horsepower electric Ford Mustang built for the drag strip. The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 and the Mustang Mach-E 1400 have similar names, and both run on electricity. But there, the similarities end. The earlier car was built for the drag strip, but the Mustang Mach-E 1400 doesn't just want to go fast in a straight line, as the multitude of carbon fiber wings and dive planes make quite clear.

The Mustang Mach-E 1400 was developed by Ford Performance and RTR, a customization shop owned by Vaughn Gittin Jr. that built Ken Block's Hoonicorn Mustang, among other machines. Gittin Jr. is a professional drifter, and the Mustang Mach-E 1400 can definitely drift, going sideways and turning its tires to smoke with the best of them. But if you want to chase lap records or quarter-mile times instead, it'll do that, too—it just requires a few suspension tweaks like changing to shorter control arms that allow for less extreme steering angles.

The OnePlus Nord mid-range smartphone is official, at ~$450

The new OnePlus phone looks great, but it’s only launching in Europe and India.

After weeks of teasing, OnePlus has finally fully announced all the details of its mid-range smartphone, the OnePlus Nord. Yes, it's called the "Nord," named for the word that means "North" in several European languages. OnePlus has leaked just about every detail of the phone leading up to the launch except for the price, which in Europe is €399, or ~$456.

For that price, you get a 90Hz display that measures 6.44 inches with a resolution of 2400×1080. The display is also flat, a big upgrade over the pointlessly curved, distorted screens you see on most flagships. There's a Snapdragon 765G, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage, and a 4100mAh battery. There's also a more expensive SKU that upgrades you to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

For rear cameras you get the same main 48MP sensor as the OnePlus 8, plus an 8MP wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens, and 5MP depth sensor. The front looks like a Samsung Galaxy S10+ with dual front cameras in an oval-shaped cutout. Besides the main 32MB selfie cam, you get a second 8MP wide-angle camera. That's six cameras on what is supposed to be a budget phone.
