Norwegian Police Seize Popcorn-Time “Information” Site

Norwegian economic crime police have seized the domain name of a local Popcorn-Time website. The site in question didn’t offer any copyright infringing material, but featured news articles and links to external sites where the popular application could be downloaded. No arrests were made.

popcorntFirst launched more than two years ago, Popcorn Time remains the go to application for many people who want to pirate the latest Hollywood blockbusters and TV-shows.

In response, rightsholders are doing their best to put a halt to its popularity. Late last year the MPAA scored a major victory when it shut down one of the most used forks, but many alternatives remain online.

To counter this threat, Norwegian rightholders called in help from Norway’s police unit and prosecution authority for economic crimes (ØKOKRIM), who today announced that they had seized the Popcorn-Time.no domain name.

Unlike the name suggests, the site didn’t host the application itself but instead posted news articles, as well as links to sites that offered the application. Below is a screenshot of the site in action, which currently displays a notice from the police.

In a public statement the Norwegian police and prosecution unit notes that the domain is believed to be complicit in criminal copyright infringement by linking to third party content.

“The Norwegian domain popcorn-time.no helps electronic publication by linking to other domains where the required software can be downloaded. In addition, the Norwegian popcorn-time.no domain posted information, user manuals and news updates,” the police states.

No one was arrested in association with the site, according to NRK.

The majority of the site’s users came from Norway but overall the site was relatively small. This is also confirmed by the site’s Facebook page, which only generated 102 likes since its launch.

Despite its modest size, police conclude that the domain name seizure is significant as the site contributed to a serious social piracy problem.

“Illegal file sharing of copyright-protected material on the Internet poses a serious social problem. The Norwegian domain popcorn-time.no constituted, in our view, part of a global problem in constant and rapid development.”

Microsoft joins the Eclipse foundation, open sources some of its plugins

The open source love affair continues.

The Eclipse Foundation, the organization that oversees development of the Eclipse development environment, has a new member: Microsoft announced Tuesday that it is joining so that it can more easily collaborate with the Eclipse community.

Simultaneous with that move, the company open sourced its Team Explorer Everywhere plugin for Eclipse, which allows Eclipse users to use Team Foundation Server for their version control and bug tracking. The code is now up on GitHub. The Team Explorer Everywhere plugin joins the Azure Toolkit for Eclipse, which is already open source.

To further streamline integration with Microsoft's services for Eclipse users, there is new support for Codenvy in Visual Studio Team Services. With the Codenvy extension, VSTS can generate an Eclipse workspace on demand, quickly setting up a virtual machine with all the right plugins and build tools to work on a project. Codenvy VMs can also now be provisioned on Azure thanks to a new Codenvy VM in the Azure Marketplace.

But Elon Musk says not on his orders; “Good hacking is a gift.”

It seems Tesla is set to bump the battery capacity of its Model S sedan up to a hefty 100kWh some time in the near future. We know this thanks to the work of a white-hat hacker and Tesla P85D owner named Jason Hughes. Hughes—who previously turned the battery pack from a wrecked Tesla into a storage array for his solar panels—was poking around in the latest firmware of his Model S (version 2.13.77) and discovered an image of the new car's badge, the P100D.

Hughes let the world know via a cryptic tweet:

That message was soon decrypted by enthusiasts on the Tesla Motors Club forum, at which time Hughes posted a copy of the picture:

How puberty may stop us from making asinine decisions

Brains may get better at making sage plans rather than suppressing childish urges.

(credit: Moyan Brenn)

The pre-pubescent penchant for shenanigans is undeniable. But how our developing brains grow out of letting us make dopey decisions is still up for debate.

Researchers have speculated that the adolescent brain eventually gets better at shoving down those hankerings to commit acts of stupidity. But now a study on primates suggests that the brain may mature by getting better at forming alternate strategies.

By examining patterns of brain activity in male macaque monkeys before and after puberty, researchers found that their adult brains make smart choices not by suppressing foolish urges but by getting better at forming wise, goal-oriented plans. The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may provide insight into how to treat patients who struggle with social and mental health problems due to cognitive immaturity, the authors suggest.
