(Exoplanet, Wissenschaft)

Review: Hands-on mandatory, but Ars lets Volvo’s XC90 drive itself in traffic

“With the XC90, we take the first step towards self-driving cars. “

We put Volvo's new XC90 T8 Hybrid to the test. Video shot and edited by Jennifer Hahn. (video link)

Volvo's XC90 SUV marks a new chapter for the Swedish automaker. It's the first vehicle to be built using Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), a platform that's also used by the new S90 sedan and V90 station wagon. The XC90 is also destined to be Volvo's best-selling vehicle here in the US—by April of this year, the company had already found customers for almost 11,000 XC90s in one of the most competitive segments in the market.

The XC90 is a vehicle packed with clever technology. Much of this technology has to do with Volvo's core focus on safety of course—which now means lots of active semi-autonomous driver assists—but this SUV marks the debut of the company's new Sensus infotainment system, too. On top of all that, the T8 variety of this range-topping vehicle is a hybrid. After spending several hundred miles in both T6 and T8 versions of the XC90, it was easy to come away with an appreciation for Sweden's latest.

(Razer, OLED)

E3: Xbox’s hardware kaboom and our picks for best games at its presser

Video: Presser highlights and Ars’ analysis of what Microsoft did right ahead of E3.

Ars' Mark Walton and Sam Machkovech discuss the awesome processing power of Scorpio. But what do all those specs mean for the gamer? Where does the Xbox One S fit in? And will existing Xbox owners upgrade? (video link)

LOS ANGELES—A few E3 press conferences have already come and gone in the past day and a half, but only one has announced a new game console so powerful that it will power 4K, 60 frames-per-second gaming. That honor goes to Microsoft and its smashing E3 conference on Monday, which ended with the reveal of the long-rumored Project Scorpio.

Between that "coming in 2017" hardware unveil, the formal introduction of the "slim" Xbox One S, and a giant slew of new games, Microsoft came out swinging in a pretty big way—so Ars' Sam Machkovech and Mark Walton came together to chat about the company's hardware and software unveils in two separate videos. We still have impressions about PlayStation's press conference coming later, so it remains to be seen if Microsoft will be declared the ultimate "winner" today, but at the very least, they were no slouches.

BREIN Wants Usenet Providers to Expose Prolific Uploaders

The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN is going after two anonymous Usenet uploaders, who shared more than 2,000 books in total. The group requested the personal details of the users from their providers, but they refused to hand them over citing privacy concerns. As a result, BREIN is now taking the matter to court.

uploadDutch anti-piracy group BREIN has targeted the operators of pirate sites for more than a decade, but more recently it began going after uploaders as well.

Over the past several months the group has tracked down several prolific uploaders and has now announced intentions to take these efforts a step further.

While many efforts have focused on BitTorrent uploaders, BREIN is also keeping a close eye on other sharing platforms. This includes Usenet, which despite staying out of the piracy headlines, remains relatively popular.

Representing several large book publishers, the anti-piracy group is going after two anonymous Usenet users, who allegedly uploaded more than 2,000 books to newsgroups.

BREIN has already contacted their Usenet providers, Eweka and Usenetter, who in response cancelled the accounts in question.

However, they refused to hand over any personal details. According to the providers, they are no longer allowed to share personal data under the e-Privacy regulation if an account is disconnected.

BREIN contests this and is now taking the matter to court. According to the group this case isn’t about regular data retention policies, instead, it’s a unique situation where the enforcement rights of the publishers should outweigh privacy concerns.

A local court will now review both positions. The court has already stated that it will review the circumstances under which BREIN requested the data, when the users’ accounts were still active.

If BREIN succeeds then the group has an extra tool in their arsenal, making it easier to expose prolific uploaders. This could also spell trouble for BitTorrent uploaders, as BREIN could try to request personal information from their ISPs.

TorrentFreak asked BREIN for a comment on their plans for the information, but at the time of publishing we haven’t heard back.

This isn’t the first time BREIN has gone after serial e-book infringers. Last year, a Dutch court ordered Google to hand over the personal details of a user that sold pirated books in the Play Store. In that case the court concluded that the rights of copyright holders outweigh the user’s rights.

Microsoft has beaten Sony to the punch and announced not one but two new Xbox One models, including the standard "Slim" second generation iteration, but also a new more powerful version of the console.

Borrowing from Apple's naming scheme, as well as the iterative upgrade cycle of devices like the iPhone, Microsoft's new "Slim" console will simply be known as the Xbox One S. Clad in a white colour scheme, it features a slim body design that's 40% smaller than the current "VCR-like" Xbox One, and will retail for $299 (a 2TB version retailing for $399 will be first available in August). The new console will also support 4K video streaming and Ultra HD Blu-ray support, as well as HDR output for games, and feature an internal power supply to further reduce the console's footprint.

While the announcement of the S was expected, what was more up in the air was whether Microsoft will use E3 to announce the still rumoured, but very likely real souped up version of the Xbox One, codenamed 'Scorpio'. With Sony confirming they won't be confirming the PS4 equivalent of 'Scorpio', the PS4 Neo, at E3, all eyes were on Microsoft to see if they would be the ones to let the cat out of the official bag.

And let the cat out they did. Microsoft, even confirming the 'Scorpio' name, says the new console will offer 4K resolution not just for video but for games too, VR support and it fully expects the Xbox One Scorpio to be the most powerful console on the market when it arrives in stores.

Emphasizing the "No-one gets left behind" philosophy behind he new hardware upgrade model, Microsoft boss Phil Spencer assured existing Xbox One owners that all future games and accessories will remain compatible with their first generation (and second generation, S) consoles.

Spencer also let loose another catch-phrase for the Xbox family, that the near future of Xbox would go "beyond generations". He was referring to the upcoming feature that would allow gamers to buy a game once and get both the Xbox One and PC version of the game, and the increased presence of the Xbox services on iOS and Android devices.

Xbox One Scorpio is set for a late 2017 release, with the retail price so far unconfirmed.
