Amazon outbids Twitter for rights to livestream Thursday Night Football games

But you must be a Prime member to watch.

Thursday Night Football has a new Internet home this year. Amazon reached an agreement with the National Football League for the rights to stream 10 Thursday Night Football games during the 2017 season. According to reports, Amazon paid $50 million for the rights, which is about five times more than the $10 million Twitter paid for the same rights to last season's Thursday games.

Amazon's deal also differs from Twitter's because only Amazon Prime members can stream these games. Last year, games shown on Twitter could be viewed by any logged-on Twitter user. This appears to be the first of many deals Amazon could reach to stream live sports to Prime members, something the company has alluded to since the end of last year. The rumor was that Amazon wasn't sure if live sports would come at an additional charge to Prime members or if they would stand alone in their own, separately priced package. The upcoming season's Thursday Night Football games are wrapped into a regular Prime membership, which costs $99 annually.

According to ESPN, Twitter couldn't compete with other high bidders for this season's games. Amazon eventually won over both Twitter and Facebook, both of which have been pouring money into live video efforts (particularly sports content) over the past year or so. Facebook recently signed a deal with Major League Soccer and Univision to livestream at least 22 regular season matches in 2017 and produce "Matchday Live" shows with complementary comments and analysis.

Microsoft opens up on Windows telemetry, tells us most of what data it collects

Windows telemetry is getting a lot more transparent.

(credit: Mike Mozart)

Microsoft has published the full range of data that Windows 10 version 1703, the Creators Update, will collect in its default "basic" telemetry setting. The company has also provided details on the kinds of information that can be captured in the optional "full" telemetry setting.

Since it was first released there has been widespread concern about Windows 10's data collection, as the operating system collects various kinds of data and sends it back to Microsoft. The company says it uses this information to determine how well systems are running and get a heads up on problems that users are facing. Telemetry isn't new to Windows, but prior to Windows 10 it was always opt-in, through schemes such as the Customer Experience Improvement Program and Windows Error Reporting. If you didn't want to send anything, you could turn it all off.

In Windows 10, however, that changed: while the Windows 10 Enterprise version, available to software assurance subscribers, enabled customers to disable telemetry, the regular consumer editions (Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro) did not. At release, there were three options (Basic, Enhanced, Full); as of the Creators Update there are only two (Basic and Full). Basic is the default setting, though members of the Windows 10 Insider Program have their systems set to Full.

Spotify finally lets artists restrict new albums to premium subscribers

Plus Kanye West is the first artist to have an album go Platinum on streams alone.

Two years after reports that Spotify might let labels limit new albums to paying subscribers, Universal Music Group—one of the "big three" music publishers—has finally inked such a deal with the streaming music giant.

The deal allows Universal Music to make some albums available only to those who subscribe to Spotify's £10/month premium service, but only for a period of two weeks. After two weeks, the album once again becomes available to all users.

"We know that not every album by every artist should be released the same way, and we've worked hard with UMG to develop a new, flexible release policy," said Spotify CEO Daniel Ek in a statement. "Starting today, Universal artists can choose to release new albums on premium only for two weeks, offering subscribers an earlier chance to explore the complete creative work, while the singles are available across Spotify for all our listeners to enjoy."

Uber’s Levandowski really doesn’t want to talk about any Waymo documents

Showing a privilege log “would violate… the right against self-incrimination.”

When Uber bought Anthony Levandowski's startup Otto for $680 million, an unnamed third party conducted a "due diligence review." Now, Levandowski and his lawyers are fighting hard to keep that review under wraps.

Google's Waymo self-driving car spinoff sued Uber in February. Waymo said that Otto, and now Uber, are using technology that Levandowski stole from Google, where he worked until early 2016.

In a document filed in court this afternoon, Levandowski says that US District Judge William Alsup should modify an earlier discovery order to protect Levandowski's Fifth Amendment rights. Levandowski's lawyers want the court to make clear that neither Uber nor Levandowski should be compelled to say who did the review or what documents, if any, were reviewed.
