The ability to remain installed and undetected makes Perfctl hard to fight.
Thousands of machines running Linux have been infected by a malware strain that’s notable for its stealth, the number of misconfigurations it can exploit, and the breadth of malicious activities it can perform, researchers reported Thursday.
The malware has been circulating since at least 2021. It gets installed by exploiting more than 20,000 common misconfigurations, a capability that may make millions of machines connected to the Internet potential targets, researchers from Aqua Security said. It can also exploit CVE-2023-33426, a vulnerability with a severity rating of 10 out of 10 that was patched last year in Apache RocketMQ, a messaging and streaming platform that’s found on many Linux machines.
The researchers are calling the malware Perfctl, the name of a malicious component that surreptitiously mines cryptocurrency. The unknown developers of the malware gave the process a name that combines the perf Linux monitoring tool and ctl, an abbreviation commonly used with command line tools. A signature characteristic of Perfctl is its use of process and file names that are identical or similar to those commonly found in Linux environments. The naming convention is one of the many ways the malware attempts to escape notice of infected users.

Judge calls Tina Peters a charlatan, says “prison is the only place” for her.
Tina Peters, a former election official in Colorado's Mesa County who promoted former President Donald Trump's election conspiracy theories and was responsible for a breach of voting-system security, was sentenced today to nine years in prison.
"Your lies are well-documented and these convictions are serious," 21st Judicial District Judge Matthew Barrett told Peters, according to The Colorado Sun. "I am convinced you would do it all over again. You are as defiant a defendant as this court has ever seen." Barrett said that "prison is the only place" for Peters.
"You are no hero," Barrett also said, according to Colorado Public Radio. "You're a charlatan who used, and is still using, your prior position in office to peddle a snake oil that's been proven to be junk time and time again."

The CDC confirmed two new bird flu cases, bringing the human tally to 17.
Two California dairy farm workers who had contact with H5N1-infected cows have contracted an H5 avian influenza virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Thursday evening.
In a news release from earlier today, California's health department announced only one presumptive positive case awaiting confirmation from the CDC. In that case, the person's illness was reported to be mild, with the only symptom being conjunctivitis (eye redness). This echoes the experience of other H5N1 human cases in this outbreak. The person is said to be staying at home and taking an antiviral flu medication.
In its media statement Thursday evening, the CDC reported confirming two cases. "At this time, there is no known link or contact between the first and second confirmed cases in California, suggesting these are separate instances of animal-to-human spread of the virus," the CDC said.
