Feds claw back $30 million of cryptocurrency stolen by North Korean hackers

Blockchain analysis keeps getting better. Expect more seizures to come.

Cryptocurrency analytics firm Chainalysis said on Thursday that it helped the US government seize $30 million worth of digital coins that North Korean-backed hackers stole earlier this year from the developer of the non-fungible token-based game Axie Infinite.

When accounting for the more than 50 percent fall in cryptocurrency prices since the theft occurred in March, the seizure represents only about 12 percent of the total funds stolen. The people who pulled off the heist transferred 173,600 ethereum worth about $594 million at the time and $25.5 million in USDC stablecoin, making it one of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts ever.

Harder to hide

The seizures "demonstrate that it is becoming more difficult for bad actors to successfully cash out their ill-gotten crypto gains,” Erin Plante, senior director of investigations at Chainalysis, wrote. “We have proven that with the right blockchain analysis tools, world-class investigators and compliance professionals can collaborate to stop even the most sophisticated hackers and launderers.”

The knives are out again in first teaser for Glass Onion

“Lock the doors. Stay in your rooms. Everyone is in danger.”

Daniel Craig reprises his role as Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

We loved director Rian Johnson's delightful 2019 hit film Knives Out as much as anyone. So we've been eager to learn more about the upcoming sequels commissioned by Netflix. Fortunately, the streaming platform just dropped the first teaser for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery—and per Johnson, it's less of a sequel and more of a new standalone mystery featuring Daniel Craig's philosophically minded Kentucky sleuth Benoit Blanc. Based on the teaser, it looks fabulous, and we can't wait for the film's release later this fall.

Knives Out premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was an instant hit, and word of mouth spread quickly. The film ended up grossing $311 million worldwide—the top-grossing film in 2019 not based on existing IP. In my review, I praised Johnson's deft ability to mix dark subject matter with a lighter touch in his old-school classic whodunnit: "Think Clue meets Murder on the Orient Express—or any number of adaptations of novels by the grande dame of murder mysteries, Agatha Christie—both of which the director cited as influences via a 2019 Twitter thread of movie posters."

So naturally there was going to be a sequel... or two. Lionsgate originally took on the project, but in 2021 Netflix won a bidding war for the rights to the film plus a second sequel, beating out both Amazon and Apple with a whopping $469 million bid. Johnson wrote the script for Glass Onion during the pandemic, inspired particularly by the Christie-based "tropical getaway" whodunnit Evil Under the Sun (1982), as well as a 1973 film called The Last of Sheila.

From “stop the spread” to “you do you”: NY mask policy has experts facepalming

The messaging is seen as a “low point” in public health messaging.

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority faced immediate backlash Thursday after unveiling a new mask-optional policy featuring the tagline "You do you" below a silly cartoon of a person improperly wearing a mask over just the nose, not the mouth.

Generally, the new policy lifts the MTA's previous requirement that riders wear a face mask—properly. Earlier signage showed a cartoon person correctly wearing a mask, with the tagline "That's the one!," after several examples of how not to wear a mask, including over just the nose. The requirement and the sign came with the slogan: "Stop the spread. Wear a mask."

But the new guidance dramatically flips the collective-effort messaging to a more individual-based approach to public health, with the slogan: "Masks are encouraged, but optional. Let's respect each other's choices." The new signage repeats the same cartoon examples of how not to wear a mask for protection, but now labels them all as acceptable.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has added GirlsDoPorn founder Michael James Pratt to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, nearly three years after he was charged with sex trafficking in a US federal court in California. The FBI is now offering a reward of $100,000 for information leading to his arrest, up from $10,000 it offered in September 2020.

Pratt is wanted "for his alleged involvement in sex trafficking and production of child pornography," the FBI said yesterday. Pratt and others who did not evade capture were accused of "a conspiracy to recruit young adult women and minor girls to engage in commercial sex acts by force, fraud, and coercion."

From 2012 to 2019, Pratt owned and operated GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys, which generated more than $17 million in revenue, the FBI said. "Locating Pratt is a high priority for the FBI in order to stop him from victimizing anyone else," Special Agent in Charge Stacey Moy said.

Cloudflare explains why Kiwi Farms was its most dangerous customer ever

Cloudflare wants government to be responsible for blocking sites like Kiwi Farms.

Cloudflare explains why Kiwi Farms was its most dangerous customer ever

Over Labor Day weekend, one of the biggest online security services providers, Cloudflare, made what it called a “dangerous” decision to block access to one of its most controversial customers, an increasingly violent alt-right web forum called Kiwi Farms.

The decision came two weeks into a pressure campaign called "Drop Kiwi Farms." It was launched by Clara Sorrenti—online alias “Keffals”—a transgender activist and Twitch streamer among those targeted most venomously by Kiwi Farms. The goal was to protect people like Keffals and fight back by forcing Cloudflare and other Internet service providers to stop enabling Kiwi Farms’ escalating attacks on trans people and other vulnerable communities.

The pressure campaign raged on social media, while Cloudflare held out for weeks. But then, within a 48-hour period, Cloudflare noted that Kiwi Farms users were growing increasingly aggressive and had started doxxing and swatting victims. (Doxxing is when someone publishes private information to incite violence against a target, and swatting involves placing a hoax call reporting imminent suicide or gun violence to police so they descend on targets with force.)
