Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, and more respond to Supreme Court decision.

Last month, Insomniac Games (Spider-Man) CEO Ted Price reportedly told his employees that parent company Sony "will not approve ANY statements from any studio on the topic of reproductive rights." That is apparently no longer true, as Insomniac and other Sony studios have tweeted statements in support of "reproductive freedom" in the wake of this morning's Supreme Court decision overturning the longstanding Roe v. Wade precedent on the issue.
"We are human beings who make games," Insomniac tweeted this morning. "Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are human rights."
By the afternoon, many of Sony's other North American game studios had started tweeting similar messages, including Sucker Punch (Ghost of Tsushima), Naughty Dog (The Last of Us), Santa Monica Studio (God of War), San Diego Studio (MLB: The Show), and Bend Studio (Days Gone). Some of Sony's European studios, including Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet), Guerilla Games (Horizon), and PlayStation London Studio, have also joined in with tweeted statements of support.
Ming-Chi Kuo called it “the most complicated product Apple has ever designed.”

Tech industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has offered the most specific prediction about a release date for an Apple augmented reality/virtual reality headset yet: January 2023.
Kuo has often made accurate, informed predictions about Apple's plans in the past, based partly on information from sources in the company's supply chain. On Thursday, he published a lengthy analysis of the VR headset industry and predicted that Apple's device will "likely" arrive in January.
Kuo called the headset "the most complicated product Apple has ever designed," noting that many current Apple suppliers are involved in the supply chain for the product. He also supported other recent leaks and speculation that the upcoming headset will not be exclusively or primarily focused on augmented reality (which places virtual options in real-world space) rather than virtual reality (which immerses the wearer in an entirely virtual space).
A popular browser-based Game Boy Advance emulator with nearly 100 working games was removed from GitHub this week. The takedown request was sent by the ESA, which acts on behalf of Nintendo and other game companies. The problem hasn’t been sorted out completely, however, as nostalgic games can easily find alternatives, even on GitHub.

Playing games using browser-based emulators is a niche pastime of some of the most dedicated gamers.
For Game Boy Advance fans there are a few websites that offer this option, albeit without permission from Nintendo.
While emulators that utilize all of their own code don’t break the law, they can face legal issues when packaged with pirated ROMs and distributed to the public. Nintendo is not happy with this activity and has cracked down on it on several occasions.
In 2015, the Japanese gaming giant already asked GitHub to remove a Game Boy Advance repository, hosted by the user “jsemu.” This worked out initially but soon after GitHub took action, copies started to appear. This included one shared by the user “jsemu3”, which Nintendo took down in 2018.
Since then many passionate Nintendo fans have found their way to yet another alternative game collection. Again, it was uploaded by a user with a familiar-sounding name; jsemu2.
This site, hosted by GitHub, has been online for a few years but this week visitors were welcomed by a 404 error. The error doesn’t mention the reason for the removal but we tracked down a DMCA notice that provides an explanation.
The takedown request was sent by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which represents Nintendo and other videogame companies. According to ESA, the site in question infringes on the copyrights and trademarks of its members.
“Our review of the Website indicates that it is has been marketing or otherwise making available products and/or services that infringe on ESA Members’ copyrights and trademarks,” the notice reads.
It appears that this is the third time that ESA has targeted this site. In its takedown request, the Association mentions that two earlier attempts failed, as GitHub requested “additional notice.”
“We are hopeful that this revised notice contains the necessary information to cause removal of the infringing uses of ESA Members’ intellectual property,” ESA writes. And indeed, this one was sufficient.
ESA’s takedown request lists the main URL where all the games were stored and also points to 75 of the ‘launchers’ directly. The site itself actually listed 98 games, but those that aren’t specifically mentioned have been removed as well.
Whether this will solve the problem completely seems doubtful. As history has shown, new copies are bound to pop up. In fact, nostalgic gamers can easily find alternatives, even on GitHub.
Finally, it is worth noting that the code for the Game Boy Emulator itself, without the pre-loaded games, is open source and still hosted elsewhere on GitHub. Nintendo doesn’t appear to have an issue with it, or it has no legal grounds to take action, as it has been online for over a decade now.

The mission’s control software hasn’t been validated, and launch window is closing.

On Friday, NASA held a press call to announce that its planned mission to the asteroid Psyche, planned for launch this autumn, was on indefinite hold. While the spacecraft is ready and has been delivered to the Kennedy Space Center, there has been a delay in validating the software that will run the mission as it operates in remote areas of the Solar System.
That delay has pushed mission readiness past the point where the launch window closes due to alignment changes in the bodies Psyche will pass on its journey to the asteroid of the same name. NASA is saying that a mission review will evaluate all options ranging from cancellation to simply delaying the mission until the next time a window opens. Problematically, Psyche's launch included a ride-along for a separate asteroid mission called Janus that has its own launch windows, so the review will need to include NASA's entire Discovery Mission program more broadly.
The asteroid Psyche is an unusual body in the Solar System. It's the former core of an object that was large enough to form a core of metallic elements; collisions have since stripped away the outer layers of this body, leaving behind something that's nearly entirely metal. Accordingly, visiting Psyche provides the opportunity to improve our understanding of the formation of everything from present-day asteroids to the bodies that merged to form the planets.
We’re currently unsure why the cells of the heart ended up dead.

Earlier this year, news broke of the first experimental xenotransplantation: A human patient with heart disease received a heart from a pig that had been genetically engineered to avoid rejection. While initially successful, the experiment ended two months later when the transplant failed, leading to the death of the patient. At the time, the team didn't disclose any details regarding what went wrong. But this week saw the publication of a research paper that goes through everything that happened to prepare for the transplant and the weeks following.
Critically, this includes the eventual failure of the transplant, which was triggered by the death of many of the muscle cells in the transplanted heart. But the reason for that death isn't clear, and the typical signs of rejection by the immune system weren't present. So, we're going to have to wait a while to understand what went wrong.
Overall, the paper paints a picture of organ recipient David Bennett as a patient who was on the verge of death when the transplant took place. He was an obvious candidate for a heart transplant and was only kept alive through the use of a device that helped oxygenate his blood outside his body. But the patient had what the researchers refer to as "poor adherence to treatment," which led four different transplant programs to deny him a human heart transplant. At that point, he and his family agreed to participate in the experimental xenotransplant program.

Phone-tracking enables “constant sale of Americans’ personal data,” Democrats say.

Four Democratic US senators today asked the Federal Trade Commission to "investigate Apple and Google for engaging in unfair and deceptive practices by enabling the collection and sale of hundreds of millions of mobile phone users' personal data."
"The FTC should investigate Apple and Google's role in transforming online advertising into an intense system of surveillance that incentivizes and facilitates the unrestrained collection and constant sale of Americans' personal data," they wrote. "These companies have failed to inform consumers of the privacy and security dangers involved in using those products. It is beyond time to bring an end to the privacy harms forced on consumers by these companies."
The letter cited the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, saying that women "seeking abortions and other reproductive healthcare will become particularly vulnerable to privacy harms, including through the collection and sharing of their location data." It continued:
