Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is either good or it’s just so comforting that I don’t care

The latest Trek series plays it almost too safe, but it still feels right.

If the modern Star Trek shows have all felt a little off to you, Strange New Worlds may be what you've been waiting for.

The modern era of TV Star Trek has been more than willing to experiment with what a Star Trek show is. Discovery and Picard both focus on heavily serialized season-long plotlines. Lower Decks is an animated sendup of (and love letter to) Trek's cultural peak in the '90s. And the computer-animated Prodigy aims for a younger audience, with simpler storylines, a lighter tone, and tween-y interpersonal melodrama aplenty.

What none of these shows has explicitly tried to do is replicate the format of older shows like the Original Series or The Next Generation—monster/alien/glowing-godlike-being-of-the-week stories where no matter how bad things might look for our heroes, everything will be more or less wrapped up at the end of the hour.

Stung by 3 court losses, ISPs stop fighting California net neutrality law

Broadband lobby dismisses case after preliminary injunction was denied three times.

The words

The broadband industry has abandoned its lawsuit against California's net neutrality law after a series of court rulings went against Internet service providers.

The four broadband lobby groups that sued California "hereby stipulate to the dismissal of this action without prejudice," they wrote in a filing Wednesday in US District Court for the Eastern District of California. The ISP groups are ACA Connects (formerly the American Cable Association), CTIA-The Wireless Association, NCTA-The Internet & Television Association, and USTelecom.

"After losing three times in federal court, the ISPs have finally realized that they can't overturn California's net neutrality law and that they should just stop trying," Stanford Law Professor Barbara van Schewick wrote, calling the development "a historic win for Californians and the open Internet."

Rock Pi 4 Model C+ is more of a minus (less powerful than the Model C, but also cheaper)

Usually when a company sticks a plus sign on the end of a product, it’s because it’s better than the normal version (or because it’s a streaming service). But when it comes to Radxa’s new Rock Pi 4 Model C+ single-board computer, the updated model is actually a bit less powerful than the Rock Pi 4 Model C that launched a few years ago.

At least it’s also cheaper. Perhaps more importantly though, it’s actually in stock. You can pick one up for $60 from AllnetChina or pay $65 at Ameridroid.

The single-board computer measures 85 x 54mm (3.4″ x 2.1″) and features a Rockchip RK3399-T processor, which is a six-core chip featuring:

  • 2 x ARM Cortex-A72 CPU cores @ 1.5 GHz
  • 4 x ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores @ 1.4 GHz
  • Mali-T864 MP4 graphics

By comparison, other members of the Rock Pi 4 family have different versions of the RK3399 processor with the Cortex-A72 cores set to run at up o 1.8 GHz or 2 GHz.

The new model ships with 4GB of LPDDR4 memory and has a microSD card reader for storage, as well as a socket for an optional eMMC module and an M.2 2230 slot for up to 2TB of PCIe 2.0 x4 storage.

Ports include:

  • 2 x micro HDMI 2.0
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 x USB 3.0 Type-A
  • 2 x USB 2.0 Type-A

There’s also a 40-pin GPIO connector, 4-lane MIPI-DSI connector, and a 2-lane MIPI-CSI2 connector for an optional camera. The system supports WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5 wireless connections.

You should be able to run Android or Linux-based operating systems on the board, and Radxa offers downloads for Android, Ubuntu, and Debian images, as well as links to third-party images for operating systems including LibreELEC, FreeBSD, and Armbian.

Chinese PC maker Mele has been selling small fanless desktop computers under the PCG35 name for years, first shipping a model with an Intel Apollo Lake processor and then following up with a Gemini Lake model.

Now the company is back with a new version sporting an Intel Celeron N5105 quad-core chip based on Jasper Lake architecture. The new Mele PCG35 HD3Q also adds support for WiFi 6 and the computer ships with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed.

The Mele PCG35 HD3Q is available from Amazon for $280 and up, but there’s a coupon that lets you save $40 on the following configurations:

Intel’s Celeron N5105 processor is a 10-watt, 4-core, 4-thread chip with base and burst speeds of 2 GHz and 2.9 Ghz, respectively, and Intel UHD integrated graphics with 24 execution units and base / burst speeds of 450 Hz / 800 MHz.

Mele already uses the same chip in the similarly-priced, but smaller Quieter3Q fanless mini PC, which is a pocket-sized computer that measures just 5.2″ x 3.2″ x 0.7″. By comparison, the PCG35 measures 7.8″ x 5.8″ x 1.7″ and has enough space under the hood for an optional 2.5″ hard drive or SSD.

In fact, the system can support up to three internal storage devices thanks to an M.2 2280 slot for NVMe storage, a 2.5″ drive bay, and eMMC storage soldered to the motherboard. There’s also a microSD card reader with support for removable cards up to 1TB.

The computer also has a Gigabit Ethernet jack, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 support, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, a 3.5mm audio jack, two HDMI 2.0 ports, and a VGA port with support for up to two 4K displays plus a 1080p display.
