Years of rumors are finally coming to fruition today—Google is finally launching the Pixel Watch. Google has been building a smartwatch OS for eight years, but it has never made self-branded smartwatch hardware. That changes today, or at least "this fall," when the Pixel Watch is slated to hit store shelves.
Google only gave a brief overview of the Pixel Watch on Wednesday and didn't include specs or a price. The watch includes Fitbit integration, the expected Google apps, and the design that leaked earlier. The front is all glass with spinnable crown on the site. The body is stainless steel and the bands are removable. It supports NFC for tap and pay, and there's a new Google Home app.
Google's smartwatch OS—first called "Android Wear" and now "Wear OS"—has been dormant for years in both the hardware and software categories. Qualcomm strangled the Android smartwatch market by going six years between significant smartwatch system on a chip releases, and Google let three years pass between major Wear OS updates. Google launched a plan to resurrect its smartwatch platform in the past year, with the launch of Wear OS 3, and a serious, more reliable hardware partner in Samsung. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 dumped Samsung's Tizen OS and is the first (and so far only) Wear OS 3 watch. So far, the plan seems to be working, with Counterpoint Research tracking a huge Wear OS market share increase year over year, and now the OS is in striking distance of the Apple Watch.

Google’s next smartphone is the $449 Pixel 6a and it’s set to hit the streets this summer. But it’s not the only new Pixel device coming this year.
The company’s first set of true wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation will go on sale alongside the Pixel 6a. This fall Google will launch a new Pixel 7 smartphone as well as the first Pixel-branded smartwatch. And the company has also provided a teaser for an upcoming Google Pixel tablet, set to launch in 2023.

Here’s what we learned about Google’s Pixel roadmap during the keynote from the Google I/O developer conference.
Google Pixel Buds Pro (July, 2022)
These $199 true wireless earbuds are Google’s first to feature active noise cancellation technology. Google equips the earbuds with a custom 6-core audio chip to handle noise cancellation, and the company says the earbuds also support transparency mode to let you hear the world around you.
There’s noise-suppression technology for improved voice quality during audio calls. And support for multi-device functionality.
With support for find-my-device functionality, you can use your phone to locate a missing earbud or earbuds. And later this year Google plans to bring support for spatial audio to the earbuds through a software update.
The company says the earbuds should offer up to 11 hours of battery life or 7 hours when using active noise cancellation.
Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro (Fall, 2022)
We don’t have many details about Google’s next-gen flagship phones yet, but Google says that they’ll be powered by next-gen Google Tensor processors with even better support for on-device artificial intelligence processing.
Available again in two sizes, the Pixel 7 Pro appears to have three rear cameras, while the Pixel 7 had two.

There’s no word on pricing yet, but the phone’s should be available sometime this fall.
Google Pixel Watch (Fall, 2022)
After years of rumors, Google is finally launching the first Pixel-branded smartwatch. It will be available this fall around the same time that the Pixel 7 goes on sale.
With a round face, support for touch and voice controls, and the latest Wear OS software, Google says the watch is designed to be a companion for all your other devices including phones, tablets, and smart home products.
But it also has some standalone capabilities. With the new Google Wallet software, you can use it to pay on the go. As the first device with deep Fitbit integration since Google acquired the activity tracker company, it also features built-in support for step, heart, and sleep tracking, among other things.

Google is starting to take tablets seriously again. Android 12L and Android 13 include a number of optimizations for tablet-sized displays. Google says it’s updating more than 20 of its own apps to better take advantage of large screens. And third-party developers are updating apps as well.
Powered by a Google Tensor processor, the new device could be for the tablet space what Google’s Pixel phones are for the smartphone space: a product aimed at developers and enthusiasts alike.
But until we know more about the pricing, capabilities, and just how seriously Google and third-party developers really take Android tablets in the coming year, it’s tough to say just how competitive the Pixel Tablet will be with existing Android tablets from companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Lenovo, not to mention Apple’s market-leading iPad line of tablets or Amazon’s budget-friendly Fire tablet lineup.

It's Google I/O today, and a big part of the keynote was the official confirmation of the Pixel 6a, Google's next mid-range smartphone. The Pixel A series has been a great option since its inception in 2019, but this year is different. The Pixel 6a—confirmed today to cost $449—is shipping with a flagship SoC—the very same Google Tensor chip that ships in the $600 Pixel 6 and $900 Pixel 6 Pro. Apple regularly ships its flagship SoC in the $400 iPhone SE, but for most Android markets, especially the US, this kind of hardware at this price point is unheard of.
For $449 you get a 6.1-inch 2400×1080, 60 Hz OLED, that flagship Google Tensor SoC, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 4,306 mAh battery. It really feels like the goal here is to create a "third flagship," and the three Pixel phones are now all equally spaced from each other. Each tier is around $150-$200 more and increases by 0.2-0.3 inches, 30 Hz, and 2GB of RAM: the $449 Pixel 6a with a 6.1-inch 60 Hz display and 6GB of RAM; the $600 Pixel 6 with a 6.4-inch 90 Hz display and 8GB of RAM; and then the $900 Pixel 6 Pro with a 6.7-inch 120Hz display and 12GB of RAM.
Just like how the spec sheet makes this a smaller flagship Pixel phone, the design follows that motif, too. The Pixel 6a looks just like the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, with an all-screen front design, a centered front camera, and an in-screen optical fingerprint reader. The back has the Pixel 6's trademark back camera bar. We were big fans of this design with the Pixel 6, both for being very distinctive and good looking, while also giving the phone a stable base to sit on when you put it down and start tapping it. So many phones are wobbly on a table, but not the Pixel 6.

Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro flagship phones have been among the company’s most successful to date. Google says it’s the fastest-selling Pixel device to date, already having sold more devices than the Pixel 4 and 5 combined.
But for the past few years the company’s mid-range phones have really hit a sweet spot for some customers, offering a combination of strong features and competitive pricing. Now Google is expanding the Pixel 6 lineup with a new mid-range model. Meet the Pixel 6a.
At first glance, the new $449 smartphone appears to be a smaller, cheaper Pixel 6. It has the same Google Tensor processor as its siblings, the same Titan M2 security chip, and many of the same capabilities including on-device AI processing. But the Pixel 6a has a smaller display that measures 6.1 inches diagonally.
And when you take a closer look at that screen, you’ll start to see where Google shaved a few features to keep the pricing lower on the Pixel 6a. While the Pixel 6 has a 90 Hz screen and the Pixel Pro has a screen refresh rate of 120 Hz, the Pixel 6a tops out at 60 Hz.
The smaller phone also has less RAM than its siblings, at just 6GB. And it only comes with one storage configuration: 128GB.
With a 4,306 mAh battery, it also has a little less battery capacity than other Pixel 6 series devices, but I suspect battery life should be comparable due to the smaller 60 Hz display.
And one of the most significant differences? This phone has dual 12MP rear cameras that are similar to the ones Google used for the Pixel 3, 4, and 5 series rather than the newer 50MP + 12MP cameras used in other Pixel 6 phones.
But given that Google’s smartphone cameras rely heavily on software for image quality, that might not be a dealbreaker. My Pixel 4a 5G still takes some stellar photographs.
Like all of Google’s current-gen phones, the Pixel 6a will also ship with the latest version of Android, receive 3 years of major operating system updates, and continue receiving monthly security updates for at least five years.

Bitcoin's price has plunged in recent days, briefly falling below $30,000 on Monday evening and again on Wednesday morning. Nayib Bukele, the bitcoin-boosting president of El Salvador, sees bitcoin's low price as a buying opportunity. He announced on Monday that El Salvador had purchased another 500 bitcoin. With one bitcoin worth around $31,000, this represented a $15.5 million bet.
Bloomberg calculates that El Salvador has accumulated a total of 2,301 bitcoins since it started buying them last September. Most were bought at prices above $45,000, so this nation of 6 million people has lost tens of millions of dollars speculating on bitcoin.

For most uses, Google Maps is a flat, 2D app, and if your device can handle more graphics and a bit more data, you can fire up the Google Earth 3D data set and get 3D buildings. At Google I/O Google has announced a new level that turns the graphics slider way, way up on Google Maps: Immersive View. When exploring an area in Google Maps, the company says Immersive View will make it "feel like you’re right there before you ever set foot inside."
The video for this feature is wild. It basically turns Google Maps into a 3D version of SimCity with AAA video game graphics. There are simulated cars that drive through the roads, and birds fly through the sky. Clouds pass overhead and cast shadows on the world. The weather is simulated, and water has realistic reflections that change with the camera. London even has an animated Ferris wheel that spins around.
Google can't possibly be tracking things like the individual positions of birds (yet!), but a lot of this is real data. The cars represent the current traffic levels on a given street. The weather represents the actual weather, even for historical data. The sun moves in real time with the time of day.
