
Lambda, a company that offers hardware and software for machine learning has partnered with PC gaming company Razer on a new laptop called the Tensorbook. Aimed at AI developers, it’s basically a Razer Blade Studio Edition laptop with top tier specs and Lambda Stack AI software pre-installed.
The notebook features an Intel Core i7-11800H processor, 64GB of RAM, 2TB of storage, and an NVIDIA RTX 3080 Max-Q GPU and ships with Lambda’s software running on top of Ubuntu Linux. Prices start at $3,499.
While that’s a lot of money to spend on a laptop, not only does the Tensorbook have high-end Intel and NVIDIA hardware, but the 4.4 pound notebook also has a 15.6 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel display with a 165 Hz refresh rate and Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.2 Type-A ports, a headset jack, and an SD card reader.
I couldn’t find a model with exactly these specs on Razer’s website, but you’d likely end up spending at least $3000 to get something similar, and that’s before paying for Lambda’s software stack and support.
Of course, if you don’t need to be able to run deep learning and AI software locally on your laptop, developers can also pay for Lambda’s cloud services which included virtual machines with NVIDIA or AMD GPUs capable of delivering far more performance than you’re likely to get from a laptop. But as Lambda explains, installing the software stack on a laptop provides a more reliable way to access code or demonstrate models on the go without the need to login to a remote server.
