Malware designed to target industrial control systems like power grids, factories, water utilities, and oil refineries represents a rare species of digital badness. So when the United States government warns of a piece of code built to target not just one of those industries, but potentially all of them, critical infrastructure owners worldwide should take notice.

On Wednesday, the Department of Energy, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the NSA, and the FBI jointly released an advisory about a new hacker toolset potentially capable of meddling with a wide range of industrial control system equipment. More than any previous industrial control system hacking toolkit, the malware contains an array of components designed to disrupt or take control of the functioning of devices, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that are sold by Schneider Electric and OMRON and are designed to serve as the interface between traditional computers and the actuators and sensors in industrial environments. Another component of the malware is designed to target Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) servers—the computers that communicate with those controllers.

Mini-laptops and handheld computers with small screens are niche devices that tend to carry high price tags these days. But for the past few years Japan’s Don Quixote has been bucking the trend with the Nanote line of mini-laptops featuring low prices… and modest specs.

The latest model is a 7 inch mini-laptop with called the Nanote Next, and it’s available for pre-order in Japan for the equivalent of $260.

The Nanote Next features a 7 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS LCD touchscreen display, a 360 degree hinge that lets you position the computer for use in laptop or tablet modes, 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and a 64GB SSD. It’s powered by an Intel Pentium Silver J4205 processor, which is a 10-watt, quad-core chip from 2017 that’s based on Intel Apollo Lake architecture.

While the processor isn’t exactly a speed demon, it should bring a small performance boost over the 6-watt Pentium N4200 processor used in last year’s Nanote P8. But more importantly, the Nanote Next uses solid state storage rather than eMMC. That should bring a significant increase in read/write speeds. The laptop’s makers say that upgrade alone can help websites load about 50% faster on the Nanote Next when compared with the Nanote P8.

Other features include a 2,050 mAh battery, stereo speakers, USB-C and USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a micro HDMI port and 3.5mm audio jack, and a microSD card reader. The mini-laptop measures 181 x 114 x 20mm (7.1″ x 4.5″ x 0.8″) and weighs about 560 grams (1.2 pounds). It ships with Windows 10 Home software.

The processor isn’t the only underwhelming feature though. The laptop’s webcam is VGA-quality, at just 0.3MP. And wireless capabilities top out at WiFi 4 and Bluetooth 4.0.

Still, it’s nice to see a mini-laptop that’s aimed at the budget market, even if it’s not necessarily a very impressive mini-laptop.

Tesla must pay ex-worker $15 million for “disturbing” racist abuse, judge rules

“Diaz faced frequent racial abuse” and Tesla “did little or nothing to respond.”

On Wednesday, a federal judge rejected Tesla's claim that it is not liable for "disturbing" racist abuse suffered by an ex-factory worker. US District Judge William Orrick rejected what he called Tesla's "watered-down revisionism" that cast plaintiff Owen Diaz's suffering as "mild and short-lived."

The judge slashed Diaz's financial award, however. While the jury awarded Diaz $6.9 million in compensatory damages and $130 million in punitive damages, Orrick set the amounts at $1.5 million in compensatory damages and $13.5 million in punitive damages instead. He wrote that the new compensatory amount of $1.5 million is "the highest award supported by the evidence" and that the punitive damages can be nine times that amount based on US law.

"The evidence was disturbing," said Orrick's ruling in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. "The jury heard that the Tesla factory was saturated with racism. Diaz faced frequent racial abuse, including the n-word and other slurs. Other employees harassed him. His supervisors and Tesla's broader management structure did little or nothing to respond. And supervisors even joined in on the abuse, one going so far as to threaten Diaz and draw a racist caricature near his workstation."

On Thursday, Reddit announced a significant overhaul to search functionality on its website. Comments are fully searchable for the first time, and other improvements have been made to ensure more robust, comprehensive, and useful search results.

Reddit says that this is the first time in the site's 16-year history that everything is searchable, from users to posts to communities to comments. Users can also search for comments within specific subreddits, allowing for more targeted searches than looking for a term across all of Reddit.

To access comment searches, click the "comments" tab at the top of the results page once you've typed in a query in the search bar located at the top of the website. Also, the search results page has a new look on both desktop and mobile.

PlayStation’s new first-party art suggests Kojima Productions acquisition

If true, this isn’t Sony’s first time spilling beans via online image updates.

An update to the official PlayStation Studios website, dedicated to Sony's slate of first-party software and the worldwide studios that make it, began featuring a new game maker this week. But it's not Bungie, the studio that Sony plans to acquire in a deal reportedly worth $3.6 billion.

Instead, Sony's formal first-party banner now includes Death Stranding, the 2019 adventure developed by Kojima Productions in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. And it's the loudest indication that Sony and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima are moving forward with a firmer partnership than ever.

The banner in question received a refresh at some point this week, as spotted on Wednesday by a commenter at gaming forum ResetEra, to reflect newer first-party Sony releases in the past year. The updated image in question remains live at PlayStation Studios' main site as of press time. Much of the banner remains identical to its 2021 version, but its MLB The Show icon has been updated for its 2022 edition's cover star, Shohei Ohtani, while images for Horizon and Gran Turismo have received updates to reflect their 2022 sequels.

Report: Samsung.com’s exploitative chat system makes employees work for free

Samsung’s chat team is actually just salespeople, and they only get paid commission.

Customer service chat is a staple of most online retailers. Rather than pulling up a phone app, figuring out what number to dial, and waiting on hold for hours, the response time of a chat system is usually much quicker. The design of these systems can be pretty awful for the workers behind them, and The Verge recently published an exposé on what it's like to work as a chat rep for Samsung.com. The story paints a picture of an exploitative system that pressures employees to work for free.

At the top of this article, you can see what Samsung's chat system looks like. After just a few seconds on the homepage of Samsung.com, a "Chat with an expert" box pops up, and with a single click, you get connected to a person. This pop-up appears on nearly every page on Samsung's website, and at a glance, it seems like a customer service line. The Verge's report says this is actually a system exclusively full of salespeople who are "commission-only, with no hourly rate." If they don't make a sale, they don't get paid. Upon closer inspection, the wording "Chat with an expert for our best offers" lightly communicates the sales intention behind this pop-up. Still, it's not hard to imagine that most users will see it as a customer service line, especially given it's ubiquitous on Samsung's site.

These employees technically aren't supposed to handle customer support queries, aren't trained in customer support, and won't get paid for doing a customer support chat. None of the people visiting Samsung.com know that, though. The official documents instruct salespeople not to respond to customer service requests and instead direct people to Samsung's support page and close the chat. The catch is, customers can also rate the salespeople after this interaction. Employees tell The Verge that not doing customer service for free leads to lower satisfaction scores, and low satisfaction scores lead to being fired. The employees say they are also encouraged to do these free customer support calls by both Samsung and its partner in this chat enterprise, a company called "Ibbu."

ACE Shuts Down Massive Pirate Site After Locating Owner in Remote Peru

As part of its global anti-piracy mission, the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) has been trying to shut down Pelisplushd.net, a massive pirate streaming site with roughly 70 million visits per month. After tracking down its operator in the remote countryside of Peru, the anti-piracy group says the site is no more.

From: TF, for the latest news on copyright battles, piracy and more.

ace-new-smallIn October 2021, TorrentFreak learned that the Motion Picture Association and its anti-piracy partner Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment had taken an interest in one of the world’s most popular pirate streaming sites.

In a DMCA subpoena application filed at a California court, MPA/ACE asked Cloudflare to hand over all information held on several pirate platforms including movie, TV show and anime streaming site Pelisplushd.net.

The site was not particularly well-known in English-speaking regions but in Latin America, its status as a giant was undisputed – 58 million visits per month according to SimilarWeb data. In the following months the site grew by millions more visitors but in the third week of March, locals reported problems accessing the site. We now know why.

ACE Claims Victory Over Pelisplushd.net

In a statement published Wednesday, ACE officially announced that it was behind the closure of Pelisplushd.net. The anti-piracy group labeled the platform the second-largest Spanish-language ‘rogue website’ in the entire Latin American region with 383.5 million visits in the past six months and nearly 75 million visits in February 2022.

In Mexico alone, the site had more visitors than hbomax.com, disneyplus.com and primevideo.com, a clear problem for those platforms which are all ACE members.

pelisplushd

“This is a huge win for the ACE team based in Latin America as we work to protect the legitimate digital ecosystem throughout the region,” said Jan van Voorn, Executive Vice President and Chief of Global Content Protection for the Motion Picture Association.

“The successful action against the operator of Pelisplushd.net was only made possible because of evidence that we gathered from previous operations conducted in other countries in Latin America.

“This speaks volumes about ACE’s ability to crack current cases utilizing years of past gathered intelligence and highlights the global, strategic approach that determines our actions around the world.”

Where Was The Site’s Operator?

The operator of Pelisplushd is yet to be named but ACE reveals that after a positive identification, the anti-piracy group tracked him down to the “remote countryside of Peru.”

That took place in March and soon after, ACE says the operator agreed to turn over his domains. As far as we can tell the main domain at Pelisplushd.net is not yet completely in ACE/MPA hands but a full transfer will probably take place later.

In the meantime, ACE members including Netflix continue to send DMCA takedown notices to Google, even after the platform’s demise.

pelisplushd DMCA

Overall, 175 copyright holders filed similar takedown notices against the Pelisplushd.net domain, suggesting that the scope of ACE’s takedown will be welcomed far beyond its regular members.

The domain was also mentioned in a recent submission to the European Commission’s ‘Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List’ by the MPA but following its shutdown, that domain can probably be crossed off the list.

That being said, several other Pelisplus-branded sites are still around, together worth tens of millions of views per month. They include Pelisplushd.to, a domain that appears to have increased its traffic by more than 500% in the last month.

The Asus Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition laptop is a thin and light notebook with premium specs. But what truly makes the notebook stand out is its “space” inspired design, including graphics on the lid and keyboard and a “futuristic” 3.5 inch OLED display on the lid that can display animations, text, or notifications.

First announced during the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, the ZenBook 14X OLED Space Edition is now available for purchase for $2000.

While that price might seem astronomical, the notebook does have a feature set that helps justify the cost, including:

  • 14 inch, 2880 x 1600 pixel OLED touchscreen display with 90 Hz refresh rate
  • Intel Core i9-12900H 14-core, 20-thread processor with Iris Xe graphics
  • 32GB LPDDR5 4800 MHz memory
  • 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
  • Windows 11 Pro

The laptop measures 311 x 221 x 16mm (12.3″ x 8.7″ x 0.6″) and weighs 1.4kg (3.1 pounds) and has two Thunderbolt ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, an HDMI 2.0b port, a headset jack, and a microSD card reader plus a 720p webcam with a privacy shutter.

The Asus Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition has a 63Wh battery and comes with a 100W USB Type-C power adapter, and the notebook has a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint sensor integrated in the power button. The chassis has been MIL-STD-810H tested for durability. Wireless capabilities include support for WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, and the notebook comes with a USB Type-A to RJ45 Ethernet adapter and a pressure-sensitive pen.

Asus notes that the box the laptop comes in can be folded and used as a notebook stand that props the computer up at a 23 degree angle.

Asus says the laptop was designed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first Asus laptop flown into space, and the decorations include a titanium-colored finish, Morse code graphics, and a planet symbol on the keyboard… because, why not?

The 3.5 inch monochrome OLED cover display continues the Asus tradition of putting weird displays on the lids of laptops. This time it’s a screen that can display the time, date, battery level, space-themed animations, or custom text, among other things.

Like many recent Asus laptops, the touchpad can also be used as a NumberPad – tap the icon in the top right corner and a grid of numbers and symbols will appear that you can use to quickly enter figures.

The Asus Zenbook 14X OLED Space Edition is available now from the Asus Store, and it’s up for pre-order from Newegg and coming soon to Amazon.

Amazon adds 5% “fuel and inflation” surcharge to seller fees for Prime shipping

Amazon reportedly already “pockets 34% of revenue earned by independent sellers.”

Amazon said it will impose a 5 percent "fuel and inflation surcharge" on third-party sellers who ship through Amazon starting on April 28. The new fee for shipments in the US was detailed on Amazon Seller Central and applies to the Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) service in which sellers rely on Amazon to store products in its warehouses and ship them to customers.

The 5 percent charge will be applied to fulfillment fees on products shipped on April 28 or later, including products purchased before that date. Amazon also said that this "surcharge is subject to change." Amazon reportedly told sellers that the "surcharge will apply to all product types."

In a "notice sent to sellers Wednesday, the company said its costs had gone up since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic due to increases in hourly wages, the hiring of workers, and construction of more warehouses," the Associated Press wrote.
