Apple is in the late stages of readying several new Mac models built on the forthcoming M2 chip, according to a report from Bloomberg citing both developer logs and people familiar with the matter.

Over the past couple of years, Apple has been transitioning nearly its entire Mac product line from Intel's chips to Apple's system on a chip, which includes a CPU, GPU, NPU, ISP, and more. The first generation of Macs running on Apple's silicon used the M1 chip and its more powerful variants, the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra.

Now Apple plans to introduce the M2, an evolutionary step from the M1.

Meet the InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer test just authorized by the FDA

The test device is about the size of carry-on luggage and performs GC-MS.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced the authorization of the first breath-based test for COVID-19.

The InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer offers highly accurate test results in about three minutes, without the need for uncomfortable swabbing or collection of hazardous samples. But, before you get your hopes up for a handheld device you can huff into as you head out the door, it's not quite that convenient. The test requires a high-tech device about the size of a carry-on suitcase—demo versions are literally housed in hard-shelled roll-aboard cases—and it requires a trained technician to operate. To take the test, a person has to sit next to the traveling instrument and blow into it through a straw for about 10 seconds.

The instrument inside the luggage is actually performing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which is a gold-standard analytical technique to finely separate out the components of a mixture. Generally, GC-MS samples are vaporized and mixed with an inert carrier gas before going through a capillary column, which separates out components by their boiling point and polarity. Then those components are ionized and fragmented and further separated out by their mass-to-charge ratios. The end readout is various peaks on a gas chromatogram, with each peak having a unique mass spectrum, allowing for the unambiguous identification of specific compounds.

DuckDuckGo Removes Pirate Sites and YouTube-DL from Its Search Results

Privacy-centered search engine DuckDuckGo has completely removed the search results for many popular pirates sites including The Pirate Bay, 1337x, and Fmovies. Several YouTube ripping services have disappeared, too and even the homepage of the open-source software youtube-mp3 is unfindable.

From: TF, for the latest news on copyright battles, piracy and more.

pirate duckLaunched in 2008, search engine DuckDuckGo is a go-to service for Internet users who value their privacy.

Unlike many competitors, the site doesn’t keep a record of users’ IP addresses or other sensitive information.

In recent years, the site also stood out by returning cleaner results than competitors such as Google, which actively alters its algorithms to downrank pirate sites. At one point, Google even pointed users to DuckDuckGo when they searched for Pirate Bay proxies.

DuckDuckGo Fears Liability

The privacy-focused search engine is not immune to potential copyright issues, however. This first became apparent when it removed several search shortcuts for ‘pirate’ sites. These “bangs”, as they are called, were seen as a potential copyright infringement liability.

“We operate globally, as do bangs, and products that actively facilitate interaction with illegal content can have us and our employees face significant legal liability, and jeopardizing the entire service,” DuckDuckBang’s Tagawa explained.

DuckDuckGo ended up removing roughly 2,000 bangs for popular sites including The Pirate Bay, 1337x, and RARBG. At the time, the search engine stressed that these sites were still listed in search results. However, that appears to have changed now.

Pirate Domains are Deindexed

When doing some research earlier today we noticed that several popular pirate sites were no longer showing up in DuckDuckGo’s results globally. Initially, we thought that some popular pages had been removed following DMCA takedown notices, but there is clearly more going on than that.

For example, searching for “site:thepiratebay.org” is supposed to return all results DuckDuckGo has indexed for The Pirate Bay’s main domain name. In this case, there are none.

pirate bay duck

The lack of results is not tied to a specific country and manually fiddling with the region settings didn’t change anything either. Apparently, DuckDuckgo has simply removed all thepiratebay.org URLs from its index.

This whole-site removal isn’t limited to The Pirate Bay either. When we do similar searches for 1337x.to, NYAA.se, Fmovies.to, Lookmovie.io, and 123moviesfree.net, no results appear. For RarBG.to and Fitgirl-repacks we only get one result, instead of the hundreds of thousands we see on other search engines.

The absence of results doesn’t only apply to pirate sites themselves. For example, there are no results for the streaming portals Flixtor and Primewire. In addition, the associated status pages, which merely include links to the official domains, are not indexed either.

Even several popular stream-rippers have been completely wiped from the search results. That includes 2conv.com, Flvto.bid, and several others.

Youtube-dl Gone?

The most surprising omission, by far, is that the official site for the open-source software youtube-dl is not indexed by DuckDuckGo. This site certainly doesn’t host or link to any copyright-infringing material.

The youtube-dl code repository was previously removed from GitHub, following a takedown notice sent by the RIAA. After looking more closely at the matter, Github eventually restored it.

We don’t know why the official youtube-dl.org website is not in DuckDuckGo’s search results, but at least the official GitHub repository is still findable.

Why?

TorrentFreak reached out to DuckDuckGo to discover why these domain names are not showing up in its search results. At the time of publication, we have yet to hear back. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the move is copyright-related, though.

A few months ago, Google also started to remove several pirate site domains from its search results. However, in Google’s case, these delistings are regional and linked to ISP blocking orders.

It’s worth pointing out that many pirate sites are still findable in DuckDuckGo. However, the search engine could certainly provide some transparency to help clear up what’s happening exactly.

Rightsholders will be happy to see that pirate sites are removed from DuckDuckGo, but it’s not without risks for users. While seasoned pirates can probably still locate the sites in question, more shady knockoff sites will now appear higher in its search results.

Twitter board fights Musk takeover with unanimous adoption of poison pill

New poison pill makes it hard for anyone to buy over 15% of Twitter stock.

Twitter's board of directors today approved a poison pill to prevent a hostile takeover in response to Elon Musk's offer to buy the firm. "The company on Friday adopted a so-called poison pill that makes it difficult for him to increase his stake beyond 15 percent," The Wall Street Journal wrote today.

In a press release, Twitter said its board unanimously "adopted the Rights Plan following an unsolicited, non-binding proposal to acquire Twitter."

"The Rights Plan will reduce the likelihood that any entity, person or group gains control of Twitter through open market accumulation without paying all shareholders an appropriate control premium or without providing the Board sufficient time to make informed judgments and take actions that are in the best interests of shareholders," the announcement said.

Quantum memristor: A memory-dependent computational unit

Quantum memristor bridges conflicting quantum requirements in single device.

Quantum computing has come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years. Indeed, once the big technology companies like IBM, Microsoft, and Google started showing an interest, I kind of stopped keeping track. Nevertheless, research on the basic elements of quantum computing continues and is, for me, more interesting than the engineering achievements of commercial labs (which are still absolutely necessary).

In line with my interests, a group of researchers demonstrated the first quantum memristor recently. This may be a critical step in bringing a type of highly efficient neural network to the world of quantum computing without an eye-watering large number of quantum connections.

Memristors and adding the quantum

The concept of the memristor dates back to the 1970s, but, for a long time, it sat like a sock under your washing machine: forgotten and un-missed. The essential idea is that the current that flows through a memristor doesn’t just depend on the voltage that is applied across the terminals but also on the history of applied voltage. Physical implementations of memristors offer great promise for low-energy computing because they can be used to make energy-efficient memory.

Driving the Jeep Magneto, an electric concept with a manual transmission

Axial-fluxing in Moab, we explore new territory in Jeep’s latest mobile think tank.

MOAB, UTAH—First things first: This cliff-climbing battery-electric Jeep concept vehicle is not headed for production, despite the hopes of many Jeep fans assembled in Moab, Utah, for this year's Jeep Easter Safari. The Magneto is an open-book or life-sized laboratory into the mind of Jeep and the brand's future.

The company has already begun to embrace the future of battery-electric propulsion, and actually, the Wrangler 4xe is the best-selling plug-in hybrid in America. In fact, Jeep showed its first iteration of the Magneto last year, though with a simple drivetrain of just 285 hp (213 kW). Jeep has rapidly awakened to a variety of uses and iterations of battery-electric power to the extent that five of the seven concept vehicles it has recently shown to the press and public use electric propulsion. And the zenith of all this is the Magneto 2.0. And we've driven it.

The Magneto began life as a regular Wrangler, but Jeep lengthened the wheelbase 12 inches (305 mm) and fitted huge 40-inch-tall tires mounted to 20-inch wheels. Huge differentials supported by heavily beefed-up suspension bits live underneath, while a throwback bikini top and an early '60s SoCal custom-ish paint scheme keep the visuals fun.
