Terahertz imaging reveals hidden inscription on 16th-century funerary cross

The technique is also useful for analyzing historic paintings and detecting skin cancer.

In 1843, archaeologists excavated the burial grounds of Remiremont Abbey in Lorraine, France (the abbey was founded in the 7th century). It was medieval custom to bury the deceased with cross-shaped plaques cut from thin sheets of lead placed across the chest. The crosses often included inscribed prayers, but many of those inscriptions have been rendered unreadable over the ensuing centuries by layers of corrosion. Now, an interdisciplinary team of scientists has successfully subjected one such funerary cross to terahertz (THz) imaging and revealed its hidden inscription—fragments of the Lord's Prayer (Pater Noster)—according to a new paper published in the journal Scientific Reports.

“Our approach enabled us to read a text that was hidden beneath corrosion, perhaps for hundreds of years,” said co-author Alexandre Locquet of Georgia Tech-Lorraine in Metz, France. “Clearly, approaches that access such information without damaging the object are of great interest to archaeologists.” According to the authors, this approach is also useful for studying historical paintings, detecting skin cancer, measuring the thickness of automotive paints, and making sure turbine blade coatings adhere properly.

In recent years, a variety of cutting-edge non-destructive imaging methods have proved to be a boon to art conservationists and archaeologists alike. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, ground-penetrating radar (radio waves) is great for locating buried artifacts, among other uses, while lidar is useful for creating high-resolution maps of surface terrain. Infrared reflectography is well-suited to certain artworks whose materials contain pigments that reflect a lot of infrared light. Ultraviolet light is ideal for identifying varnishes and detecting any retouching that was done with white pigments containing zinc and titanium, although UV light doesn't penetrate paint layers.

The Kubuntu Focus M2 is a high-performance laptop that ships with the Kubuntu operating system pre-installed. The first version of the laptop was released in 2019, and since then the makers of the Ubuntu-based Linux distribution have worked with their hardware partners on several updates.

The latest version is powered by a 12th-gen Intel Core i7-12700H processor and NVIDIA RTX 30 series graphics. The Kubuntu Focus M2 Gen 4 is now available for purchase for $1895 and up and the laptop should begin shipping to customers May 9, 2022.

The starting price gets you a notebook with a 15.6 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel 165 Hz IPS LCD display, 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, 500GB of PCIe 4 NVMe storage, and NVIDIA RTX 3060 graphics, but the computer can also be configured with up to an RTX 3080 Ti GPU, up to 64GB of RAM, and up to 4TB of storage (there are dual M.2 2280 slots).

Among other things, the new model has a higher-resolution display with a faster refresh rate than last year’s 3rd-gen model, a higher-resolution webcam, more ports (including an SD card reader), and a processor bump from an 11th-gen Intel Core i7-11800H chip to the newer 12th-gen Core i7-12700H processor.

While both of those are 45-watt chips, the newer processor is a 14-core, 20-thread chip based on Intel Alder Lake architecture, which brings a pretty significant performance boost over the previous-gen 8-core, 16-thread Tiger Lake part.

The new model ships with Kubuntu 22.04 LTS software, which is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with the KDE 5.24 LTS desktop environment and a set of tools a and drivers specifically for the Kubuntu Focus M2 laptop.

The notebook has an 80 Wh battery and 230 Wh power supply, a body that measures 14.1″ x 9.5″ x 1″ and which weighs about 5.3 pounds. It has a backlit keyboard with support for multiple color options (but it’s single-zone lighting, rather than per-key), a number pad, and support for WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and Gigabit Ethernet connections.

Other features include stereo 2W speakers, a 2MP/1080p webcam with a privacy shutter, and a set of ports that includes Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort 1.4, and USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, an SD card reader, as well as dual audio jacks.
