Asus is showing off several new members of its ProArt line of professional displays at the NAB show this week, including a very unusual portable monitor with an ultra-wide display with support for pen input and a built-in Asus Dial that can be used to control functions in apps that support Microsoft’s Surface Dial.
While Asus first introduced the ProArt Display PA147CDV last fall, it’s still not available for purchase yet. But perhaps its appearance at the NAB show indicates that a launch may be imminent.
The portable monitor features a 14 inch, 1920 x 550 pixel IPS LCD display panel with 10-bit color, 100 percent sRGB color gamut and Delta E < 2 color accuracy.
That screen, which is similar in size and resolution to the secondary displays the company uses for some of its “Duo” series dual-screen laptops, has a 32:9 aspect ratio that seems like it would be awkward to use for running full-blown apps, but which could come in handy if you’re looking for a surface that can be used to display controls or other secondary content while an app is taking up space on your primary display.
It could also be used to display chat apps, web browsers, or other apps while leaving your primary display uncluttered. Or you could use it as an input device, thanks to support for 10-finger capacitive touch input, pen input (any digital pen that supports Microsoft’s Pen Protocol 2.0 should work) and the Asus Dial positioned in the base behind the display.
There’s a built-in kickstand that allows you to adjust the angle of the display for use in horizontal or vertical orientations, or anything in between. And the display has an HDMI 1.4 input and two USB-C ports, which should allow you to connect just about any PC or mobile device.
Asus hasn’t announced pricing or availability details for the ProArt Display PA147CDV yet.

The female of the species may use sexual cannibalism to judge the quality of a mate.
Rudyard Kipling famously observed in a 1911 poem that "the female of the species is deadlier than the male." He specifically cited female bears and cobras, but the sentiment would certainly apply to many species of spider, as some female spiders habitually consume the males after mating—a behavior known as sexual cannibalism. The males in one species of orb-weaving spider (Philoponella prominens) have adopted an unusual defense strategy, according to a new paper published in the journal Current Biology. They catapult themselves away immediately after mating in hopes of having another go before being eaten—often flying through the air too quickly for a common camera to capture the details.
This species forms colonies in which spiders have individual webs that are loosely linked to form a conglomerate web complex, according to the authors. These communal webs can house as many as 215 spiders, with a male-to-female ratio of about 1.5. The team surveyed 477 such communal webs in the field, noting that the female spiders rarely left their webs and then usually only if the conglomerate web was destroyed. But the male spiders went from web to web in search of mates once they reached full maturity.
And yes, the females proved to be particularly aggressive during the mating process, which often ended in sexual cannibalism. The male spiders who escaped that fate were able to catapult away quickly once mating had concluded. Male spiders usually produced a dragline anchored to the female's web during courtship, which remained in place while mating. Once the deed was done and the female spider moved to attack, the male spider pushed himself off the web and swung to safety.

Chevrolet’s worst-kept secret is no longer a secret.
Enlarge / Moving from front- to mid-engined was quite a change for Corvette fans—now we'll see how they respond to a hybrid version. (credit: Chevrolet)
On Monday, General Motors President Mark Reuss used LinkedIn to confirm one of the worst-kept secrets in Detroit: There will be a hybrid Chevrolet Corvette on sale next year. Reuss also said a fully battery electric Corvette is in the pipeline, although he did not give a firm date for that version.
A hybrid Corvette has been a possibility for a while now—Chevrolet trademarked the name "Corvette E-Ray" back in 2015, while the current mid-engined Corvette was still in the early stages of its development.
Just moving the engine from in front of the driver to behind the seats was a big change for the Corvette corrals of the world, and adding an electrified option at launch might have been a bit too much. A hybrid version is logical, though; going beyond the Z06's 670 hp (500 kW) while remaining manageable for drivers who aren't professional racing drivers means adding all-wheel drive.
One thing seems clear: Private orbital spaceflight will be very different.

The Crew Dragon spacecraft named Endeavour undocked from the International Space Station on Sunday evening, setting the stage to bring four private astronauts back to Earth.
After slowly backing away from the orbiting laboratory, Endeavour is now positioned to conduct a de-orbit burn on Monday, nudging it into Earth's atmosphere. After a brief, fiery trip through the atmosphere, the spacecraft will splash down off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, at 1:06 pm ET (17:06 UTC).
Upon landing back on Earth, Ax-1 mission Commander Michael López-Alegría, Pilot Larry Connor, and Mission Specialists Eytan Stibbe and Mark Pathy will have spent 17 days in space following their launch on April 8. The crew was originally scheduled to spend eight days docked to the space station, but the mission was eventually extended a week by poor weather in Dragon's landing zones around Florida.

The makers of the AYA Neo and AYA Neo Next handheld gaming PCs have introduced a new model featuring an OLED display and a smaller, lighter design. The AYA Neo Air weighs less than 400 grams (14 ounces) and is nearly as thin as a Nintendo Switch Lite.
But unlike a Switch, this is a full-fledged Windows computer with an x86 processor and the ability to run PC games. The AYA Neo Air is also expected to be one of the most affordable devices from AYA to date. It’s set to launch later this month, but AYA has already provided some details about the upcoming handheld.
AYA hasn’t revealed the processor used in the little computer yet, but the company has indicated that it will be a Ryzen 5000 chip capable of handling many indie games at 1080p resolution and AAA titles running at 720p.
The processor is likely likely set to run at 12 watts in order to balance power consumption and heat generation. And since AYA has indicated that the price will be competitive, there’s good reason to think that it could be a Ryzen 3 chip with Radeon Vega graphics rather than a higher-performance Ryzen 5 or 7 series processor.
Pictures of the AYA Neo Air reveal that it will have two USB-C ports, and AYA says it’s powerful enough to use as a PC if you use them to connect a keyboard, mouse, display, or other accessories. There’s also a headset jack and microSD card reader.
Other features of the handheld are expected to include RGB lighting under the analog sticks and an x-axis linear motor. The OLED display support 107% NTSC color gamut. Independent reports suggest that the display will be a 5.5 inch, 1080p display.

AYA says the Neo Air will be available in black and white color options, as well as other colors that will be announced closer to release.
Chinese PC makers have cranked out a growing number of handheld gaming computers over the past few years. But with the arrival of Valve’s Steam Deck on the scene, their value proposition has become increasingly questionable. Sure, systems like the GPD Win, AYA Neo, and ONEXPLAYER line of devices may have more powerful processors or other bells and whistles that the Steam Deck lacks, but Valve’s handheld has an affordable $399 starting price and AMD RDNA 2 graphics, which gives it the ability to offer higher frame rates in most games.
But the Steam Deck is also a big and heavy device, weighing 1.5 pounds and measures 11.7″ x 4.6″ x 1.9″. That could make it uncomfortable to hold for extended gaming sessions when compared with a more compact device like the Nintendo Switch Lite, which measures 8.2″ x 3.6″ x 1.1″ and weighs about 10 ounces.
If AYA manages to truly deliver a full-fledged Windows PC that’s about the size of a Switch Lite while weighing less than a pound, then there might actually be a reason for some gamers to consider the company’s latest Steam Deck comparison… assuming the price is right.
AYA plans to officially launch the Neo Air in May, so we shouldn’t have to wait long to find out how much it’ll cost or exactly which processor will be powering the new model.
