It's the weekend, which means the time has come for another Dealmaster. Our latest roundup of the best tech deals from around the web is headlined by more of a PSA than an outright discount: if you've been interested in buying one of Microsoft's latest game consoles, the Xbox Series X or Series S, it looks like you may finally be able to do so without having to rush to beat scalpers or keep a constant eye on stock trackers.

The more powerful Series X, for one, has been in stock at Walmart for most of the past couple of weeks. There's no discount from Microsoft's $499 MSRP and you'll need to log into a free Walmart account to checkout, but the process of actually obtaining the Series X now appears to be far more stable than it has been for the past year and a half, during which time the console has typically either sold out within minutes or not been available at all.

If Walmart's supply runs out, Microsoft itself has the Series X in stock as well, albeit in bundle form. This package includes the console, a second controller (one comes in the box), and one of a handful of games. The cheapest game option is the Ars-recommended Assassin's Creed Valhalla for $24, though the selection also includes the newly acclaimed RPG Elden Ring at full price. If you planned on picking up an extra gamepad and one of the available games anyway, this isn't the most egregious bundle we've seen in recent months.

The EliteMini B550 is a compact desktop computer from Chinese PC maker MINISFORUM that’s powered by a 65-watt AMD Ryzen desktop processor with integrated graphics. But it’s also positioned as a computer that can be used with a desktop-class discrete graphics card.

Since there’s no room inside the 9.5″ x 8.2″ x 5″ computer for a discrete GPU though, it comes with dock that allows you to connect a graphics card and power supply (sold separately). First announced a few months ago, the MINISFORUM EliteMini B550 is now up for pre-order for $499 and up and should ship in May, 2022.

That starting price is for a barebones model with an AMD Ryzen 7 4700G processor, but you can also pay an extra $100 for a model with a Ryzen 7 5700G chip, and MINISFORUM is offering configurations with up to 32GB of RAM and 512GB of solid state storage for folks who’d prefer to buy a system with those pre-installed, rather than providing their own.

Pre-order prices also represent a $50 discount off the expected retail prices.

Since the computer has an AM4 socket, you can also replace the included processor with other AMD Ryzen 4000 or Ryzen 5000 series chips. Just keep in mind that the computer only supports chips with up to a 65W TDP, so that rules out higher-power processors like the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X.

But what really makes the little computer stand out is the expansion dock, which allows you to pair a desktop graphics card with the EliteMini B550 without the need to buy a third-party dock. Since the included power brick isn’t strong enough to provide electricity to a discrete GPU though, you’ll need to buy a PSU in addition to a graphics card if you want to use that expansion dock.

The computer itself has two SODIMM slots for up to 64GB of DDR4 memory, two M.2 2280 slots for PCIe NVMe or SATA storage (PCIe 4.0 support is available for some processors, while others will only support PCIe 3.0), a 2.5 inch bay for a SATA hard drive or SSD, and support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

Ports include:

  • 2 x HDMI
  • 1 x DisplayPort
  • 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
  • 4 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
  • 1 x 3.5mm mic input
  • 1 x 3.5mm line out
  • 1 x 2.5 Gbps Ethernet

With a user-replaceable processor, memory, and storage, the EliteMini B550 would already have been one of the most upgradeable/customizable mini PCs, around. But thanks to the graphics dock that comes with the computer, it’s certainly one of the most versatile devices in this category.

It would have been nice to see a USB4 port though.

Russia asked NASA to end sanctions to save the ISS, but the West didn’t blink

“Sustaining safe and successful ISS operations remains a priority for the United States.”

For a few weeks now, the chief of Russia's spaceflight activities has said that the United States and its Western allies must end sanctions on his country by March 31, or face the consequences when it comes to partnering on the International Space Station.

After those sanctions remained in place at the end of March, the director general of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, vowed to issue a response on April 2. True to his word, he did so early on Saturday morning. His full Twitter thread can be found here, but it is fairly simple to summarize: More bluster, more threats, but likely little change.

In his new missive, Rogozin is still demanding "complete and unconditional" end of the Western sanctions, and he is still threatening to end partnership on the International Space Station. Specifically, Rogozin said Roscosmos will soon send "specific proposals" to complete its cooperation on the space station to the Russian government.

RIAA Targets Popular YouTube Ripper With 60 Million Monthly Visits

The RIAA’s legal campaign to crack down on tools and sites that utilize YouTube to provide unlicensed MP3 song downloads looks set to expand. A DMCA subpoena application filed in the United States reveals that the music industry group is trying to identify the operator of 320ytmp3.com, a huge YouTube-ripping service with an estimated 60 million visits per month.

From: TF, for the latest news on copyright battles, piracy and more.

RIAAAfter more than two decades of declining fortunes, 2021 was a blockbuster year for global recorded music revenues.

With a growth of 18.5% on the previous year and revenues of $25.9 billion, 2021 marked a return to levels last witnessed pre-Napster in the late 1990s. Nevertheless, more than 20 years later the music industry is still fighting piracy but against a relatively new enemy – YouTube-ripping services.

By enabling users to access tracks on YouTube and convert them to MP3 downloads, tools like youtube-dl and sites including Yout, flvto and 2conv are all embroiled in lawsuits involving the IFPI and RIAA, both in the United States and further afield.

That being said, there are always more targets for the major labels and two more have just appeared on the radar.

RIAA Filed Complaints With Cloudflare

In emails dated March 29, the RIAA informed Cloudflare that “users of its system” are engaged in copyright infringement so help is needed to track them down.

“We have a good faith belief that this activity is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law. We assert that the information in this notification is accurate, based on the data available to us,” the emails read.

The RIAA emails to Cloudflare reference two YouTube-ripping style platforms – mp3download.to and 320ytmp3.com. According to SimilarWeb stats, the former’s traffic ranges between 3.5 million and 6 million visits per month. The latter, on the other hand, is a much more popular resource.

In December 2021, January and February 2022, the site pulled in between 53 million and 61.8 million visitors per month. Almost 30% of users came from the United States with the UK, Canada and India occupying the rest of the top slots. That makes 320ytmp3.com one of the most popular sites of its type online today.

Cloudflare Won’t Do Much Without a Court Order

The RIAA’s emails asked Cloudflare to take immediate action against both platforms in respect of specific links cited in the RIAA’s complaints, which reference songs by Wham! and Chicago, among others. The emails also ask Cloudflare to “consider the widespread and repeated infringing nature” of the sites in light of the CDN provider’s repeat infringer policy.

In reality, though, the RIAA wants something more valuable.

Given that Cloudflare won’t give up its customers’ details without authorization, this week the RIAA also filed a DMCA subpoena application at a California court. Listing the same musical works, the music industry group requested an order to compel Cloudflare to hand over the personal details of those behind the two sites, including their names, physical addresses, IP addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and payment information.

The court quickly signed off on the application, meaning that Cloudflare is now required to hand over information to the RIAA so that its inquiries can be taken to the next level. Whether Cloudflare holds any useful information remains an open question since sites are known to sign up to the service using fake details.

However, even in the absence of direct legal action against either of the platforms, there is still a strong chance that one or both will appear in future court-ordered ISP blocking injunctions, mostly actioned by ISPs outside the United States.

The RIAA has recently filed DMCA takedown notices against 320ytmp3.com with the aim of removing the site’s links from Google search. Many more have been filed with Google by the BPI in the UK (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) which could be a sign of an upcoming High Court application.
