After prematurely announcing that Steam on Chromebooks was ready for testing last week, Google is making the release official today. The alpha version of Steam on Chrome OS is currently available in the Chrome OS 14583.0.0 Dev channel, as announced via a post in Google's Chrome Developers Community.

Not all Chromebooks will be able to run Steam, however. Google said only the following machines can try the alpha:

  • Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1W)
  • Acer Chromebook 515 (CB515-1W)
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W)
  • Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5500)
  • Asus Chromebook CX9 (CX9400)
  • HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook
  • Lenovo 5i-14 Chromebook

"Because many games have high performance demands, we’ve focused our efforts thus far on a set of devices where more games can run well," Google said.

Dynabook’s new Tecra A40-K and Tecra A50-K laptops are business-class notebooks with MIL-STD-810H tested cases, support for up to an Intel Core i7-1280P vPro processor, up to 64GB of RAM and 14 or 15.6 inch displays.

While the new laptops aren’t as thin and light as the Portégé models with similar chips that launched earlier this month, they are more affordable, with starting prices around $1,000.

Both the new Dynabook Tecra A40-K and Tecra A50-K will ship in April and the laptops will come with Windows 11 Pro, although they also support an optional Windows 10 Pro downgrade.

Unfortunately a look at the spec sheets suggest that entry-level models may have 1366 x 768 pixel displays, which I’m surprised to see is even an option for notebooks in this price range. But both are also available with up to a 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS LCD display with optional support for touch.

Here’s a run-down of key specs for the new Dynabook Tecra A series:

Apple employee spent a decade defrauding company of $10M, DOJ says

Under CEO Tim Cook’s watchful eye, Apple has become famous for its tightly managed supply chain. Yet even the most finely tuned machines run into problems from time to time. The case of Dhirendra Prasad appears to be one of those times.

Prasad’s time at Apple coincided with the company’s meteoric rise. He joined in 2008, just after the iPhone was released, and spent the next decade there as a buyer in the company’s Global Service Supply Chain group, which sources repair parts from a range of vendors.

During that time, Prasad devised a scheme with two other men, Robert Gary Hansen and Don M. Baker, who owned vendors that Apple worked with, the Department of Justice says.

When Google released Android 12L earlier this month, the company highlighted new features designed for tablets, foldables, and other large-screen devices. But the company also said you’ll have to wait until later this year for the operating system, to roll out for tablets and foldables.

One reason for that? The first devices to get new Android updates are typically Google-made products… but Google doesn’t make its own Android tablets anymore. Once upon a time the company did though – and now you can (unofficially) run Android 12L on one of the best.

Google Nexus 7 (2013)

The Google Nexus 7 (2013) is a tablet with a 7 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS LCD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and up to 32GB of storage. It originally shipped with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But folks have been unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and installing custom recoveries and custom ROMs since the tablet was first released.

Now developer followmsi has released an unofficial build of LineageOS 19.1 for the Nexus (2013), which means you can run Google’s new tablet-friendly build of Android on a Google tablet that’s almost a decade old.

Sure, some of its hardware looks a bit dated. It has a micro USB 2.0 port, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and the front and rear cameras top out at 5MP and 1.2Mp, respectively. But the tablet does have NFC and GPS support, stereo speakers, and a headphone jack (but no microSD card reader).

While there’s always some risk involved with replacing official software with an unofficial custom ROM like LineageOS, it’s been years since Google offered any sort of official support at all for the Nexus 7. So the fact that there’s a way to run up-to-date software with the latest features, app compatibility, and security patches, is pretty impressive.

Note that in order to install LineageOS 19.1 though, you may need to resize some partitions, particularly if you want to install Google apps (including the Google Play Store). Followmsi also says the latest builds have SELinux set to permissive mode, encryption hasn’t been tested, and some LineageOS customizations and bug fixes are not yet included, so it’s probably best to proceed with caution if you’re trying to install the software on a Nexus 7 that you’re actively using.
