As expected, Apple took the stage in a streaming product event today to announce a new version of the company's cheapest iPhone, the iPhone SE.

Like its 2020 predecessor, the new SE closely resembles the iPhone 8 first released back in 2017. To keep the cost down, the new SE still has a home button and a fingerprint reader, unlike other modern iPhones. But it's got some newer things on the inside. Namely, it has Apple's A15 system-on-a-chip, which was previously seen in 2021's flagship iPhone 13.

The new device comes in three colors: Midnight, Starlight, and Product RED. Apple says the new SE is 1.8 times faster than the iPhone 8, it has a 12MP camera and IP67 dust and water resistance, and Apple promises "better battery life."

Google makes second-largest acquisition ever: $5.4 billion for Mandiant

Google has announced a massive $5.4 billion deal to acquire the cybersecurity firm Mandiant, Inc. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval, but Google says it expects the deal to close later this year. If it goes through, it would be Google's second-largest acquisition ever, slotting in between the $12.5 billion deal for Motorola Mobility and the $3.2 billion purchase of Nest. Mandiant will join the Google Cloud division.

Mandiant was founded in 2004 and does security consultancy and threat research. It makes an automated threat-monitoring system called the "Mandiant Advantage Platform." Mandiant was a key researcher investigating many of the world's biggest security incidents, like the SolarWinds supply-chain attack, the Log4j vulnerability, and the Pulse Secure VPN vulnerabilities.

Google has a ton of experience securing its own cloud. Besides bulking up Google's security staff on its home turf, the goal of this deal is to bring more of that security know-how onsite with security consultancy services. The blog post lays out what the full Google Cloud security offering will look like:

System76 Launch review: Linux-friendly keyboard with a USB hub

USB hub and quality keycaps tempt, but stiff switches are polarizing.

Specs at a glance: System76 Launch
Switches Kailh Box Jade or Kailh Box Royal
Keycaps PBT plastic
Connectivity options USB-A or USB-C cable
Backlighting Per-key RGB
Size 12.17 × 5.35 × 1.3 inches
(309 × 136 × 33 mm)
Weight 2.09 lbs (948 g)
Warranty 1 year
Price (MSRP) $285
Other perks Integrated USB hub, keycap/switch puller,  17x extra keycaps

The Launch is System76's first mechanical keyboard, but it could be the last keyboard you need. With hot-swappable mechanical switches, legends that won't fade, a durable build, and a pair of detachable cables, this tenkeyless board can evolve with you.

It's also open source—from its chassis to its PCB and firmware—allowing for deeper tinkering. There are even some extra keycaps for when you want a new look. And in true System76 style, the board favors Linux users.

At $285, though, the Launch is a big investment, and many won't like how hard it is to press the keys. The clicky mechanical switches are so tactile that they'll tire some fingers out.

Biden bans imports of all Russian fossil fuels amid broad bipartisan support

Vast majority of Americans support the move, while the UK will follow suit.

Biden bans imports of all Russian fossil fuels amid broad bipartisan support

President Joe Biden announced today that the US will ban imports of Russian oil, natural gas, and coal. The UK will follow suit, according to a Politico report, phasing out Russian oil and gas purchases over the next several months.

The coordinated moves will add further pressure to Putin’s regime after he ordered the invasion of Ukraine. Russian crude oil and related products made up about 8 percent of US imports last year, while the UK imports about a third of its oil and 5 percent of its gas from the country.

“Today I am announcing the United States is targeting the main artery of Russia's economy. We’re banning all imports of Russian oil and gas and energy,” Biden said today. “That means Russian oil will no longer be acceptable at US ports, and the American people will deal another powerful blow to Putin's war machine.”

The Topton M6 is a compact computer that’s about the size of a (thick) smartphone without a display. But it’s a full-fledged computer with an Intel Celeron N5105 10-watt, quad-core processor, support for up to 16GB of RAM, PCIe NVMe storage, and a decent set of ports for a computer small enough to slide into a pocket.

It’s also a familiar looking computer – the Topton M6 appears to be virtually identical to the Morefine M6 which launched last month.

There may be at least one reason to consider Topton’s model though: it’s available with a few more configuration options.

The Morefine M6 is available from AliExpress for $229 and up and comes with 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB to 1TB of storage. It’s unclear what operating system it ships with, if any.

Topton’s M6, meanwhile, sells for $200 and up at AliExpress and comes with a choice for Windows 10 Pro, Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu, or no operating system at all. And that starting price is for a model with 8GB of RAM and no SSD, making it an interesting options for folks that want to supply their own storage and operating system.

Bear in mind that I wouldn’t expect much in the way of customer service or support for either model.

Both computers measure 150 x 80 x 19mm (6.1″ x 3.1″ x 075″) and weigh 195 grams (6.9 ounces). Both feature copper heat sinks and small fans inside the case for active cooling. Both feature LPDDR4-2933 memory and two M.2 slots (M.2 2280 with NVMe SSD support and M.2 2242 for SATA SSDs).

Other similarities include an Intel AX201 wireless card with support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 and a set of ports along one side that includes:

  • 1 x HDMI 2.0
  • 1 x USB Type-C (full function)
  • 1 x USB Type-C (power input)
  • 3 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio
  • 1 x 2.5 Gbps Ethernet

Like the Morefine M6, the Topton model should be able to handle up to two 4K/60Hz displays thanks to the HDMI and USB Type-C ports.
