Samsung’s 2022 flagship phone lineup marks the official merging of the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note line of devices thanks to the new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra which earns it ultra in just about every conceivable way.

It’s a phone with a big, high-res display, support for plenty of memory and storage, an impressive set of cameras, a big battery and fast charging support, and not only does the Galaxy S22 Ultra support pressure-sensitive input with a Samsung S-Pen, but it also has a garage that lets you store the pen inside the phone when you’re not using it. But the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a big price tag to go along with its big specs: it sells for $1200 and up. Fortunately Samsung also has new Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ models for folks looking for something a little more affordable.

All of the new phones feature 120 Hz AMOLED displays, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Samsung Exynos 2200 processors (depending on the region where you buy the phone), LPDDR5 memory, UFS 3.1 storage, and support for shooting 4K/60Hz video with their front or rear cameras (you can also record 8K video at 24 fps with the rear cameras).

But the Galaxy S22 has a smaller screen and battery, slower fast charging, and an $800 starting price, while the $1000 Galaxy S22+ has a screen that’s almost as big as the S22 Ultra’s, but at a lower resolution. Both phones also lack S-Pen support and only support up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (while the S22 Ultra tops out at 12GB and 1TB, respectively).

Here’s an overview of key specs for each of Samsung’s new S22 series phones:

February is officially new phone season, and Samsung is kicking things off with the launch of the Galaxy S22. After all the leaks, the big news items today are the prices and release date. The phones cost the same as last year: $799.99 for the S22, $999.99 for the S22+, and $1,199.99 for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Preorders for the phones start today, and the ship date is February 25.

On the base and "Plus" models, there aren't a lot of design changes to talk about. The Ultra model is getting a big change, though—it's basically turning into the Galaxy Note. Samsung killed the stylus-equipped Note line in 2020, choosing instead to focus on foldable smartphones rather than launching two nearly identical slab smartphones every year. The Galaxy S22 Ultra isn't called a Note, but it's picking up the design and features of one, with taller corners and an integrated S-Pen. The Ultra model also has a new look for the camera bump, which goes with individual lenses instead of the big corner bump of last year.

Figuring out the differences from year to year is mostly a game of millimeters. The base model S22 is a bit smaller than last year, with a 6.1-inch, 120Hz, 2340×1080 display and a 146×70.6×7.6 mm body (down from 6.2-inches and 151.7×71.2×7.9 mm last year). It also has a smaller battery—3700 mAh versus the 4000 mAh battery of the S21. The phone has 8GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB of storage. You get three rear cameras on the base and plus models: a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultra-wide, and 10MP, 3X optical zoom. There's a 10MP front camera.

Sony trains “superhuman” AI to race in Gran Turismo

The AI needed to master car control, tactics, etiquette, and strategy.

A team of researchers at Sony AI have used deep reinforcement learning to teach an artificial intelligence to play Gran Turismo at a world-class level. While previous experiments have taught AI how to drive very fast, this is the first time that one has learned to actually race. And to prove it, the AI beat some of the world's best GT players in head-to-head competition, as described in a new paper published in Nature this week.

Racing is not easy, and it involves more than just knowing how to drive a car really fast. Car control is obviously important, but so too are tactics, strategy, and the somewhat nebulous concept of etiquette.

Or, as the authors put it, "[a]utomobile racing is a domain that poses exactly these challenges; it requires real-time control of vehicles with complex, non-linear dynamics while operating within inches of opponents." Some drivers might have limited success through aggression and going for every overtaking opportunity they see. But knowing where to pass and when to wait for a better opportunity—so you don't get re-passed at the end of the next straight, for instance—is at least as important, as is knowing when to cede to a rival so you don't end up in the wall or a gravel trap.

Samsung is introducing its latest flagship phones and tablets today… but the company is also making a new promise: some Galaxy devices will now receive as many as four major Android and Samsung One UI updates and up to five years of security updates.

That puts Samsung at the head of the pack when it comes to Android phone makers. Google’s Pixel 6 phones, for example, will get five years of security updates but Google (the company that makes Android) is only promising three major OS updates).

That said, Samsung’s announcement is full of caveats:

  • It’s available on select Samsung Galaxy S, Z, and A series phones and tablets, which means that not all members of those families will be supported that long.
  • Samsung carefully says “up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades” and “up to five years of security updates,” suggesting that there’s a bit of wiggle room.

The company also doesn’t say how frequently it will roll out security updates. While Google makes security patches available on a monthly basis, phone makers sometimes choose to roll them out to users on a quarterly or slower basis… particularly for older phones.

For now it seems like folks who’ve bought a Samsung flagship phone in the past year or so will likely be covered, as are customers who buy new flagship phones or tablets this year. Here are the devices Samsung says will received four generations of major software upgrades and five years of security updates:

  • Galaxy S Series: Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra as well as Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, S21 FE and upcoming S series devices
  • Galaxy Z Series: Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3 and upcoming Z series devices
  • Galaxy A Series: upcoming select A series devices
  • Galaxy Tablets: Galaxy Tab S8, S8+, S8 Ultra and upcoming Tab S series devices

The four year upgrade commitment also extends to the Samsung Galaxy Watch4, Watch4 Classic, and upcoming Galaxy Watch devices.
