When LG announced last year that it was shutting down its smartphone business, the company promised that it wouldn’t leave existing customers high and dry. LG was promising to offer a few more major Android updates to its most recent flagships and some mid-range devices.

It looks like the company is delivering on that promise, because after promising last month to release an Android 12 update for the LG Velvet smartphone, LG has begun rolling out the OS upgrade to some customers in South Korea.

The LG Velvet was released in 2020 and originally shipped with Android 10 software. Last year LG released an Android 11 update, and now it looks like Android 12 is imminent. LG has also promised at least one more update for the phone, so expect it to receive Android 13 sometime after Google releases the next major version of its mobile operating system later this year.

The Velvet features a 6.8 inch, 2460 x 1080 pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a microSD card reader, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a 4,300 mAh battery, a 16MP front camera, and three rear cameras: 48MP primary, 8MP wide-angle, and 5MP depth.

There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the phone, stereo speakers, support for 5G, WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, and NFC, and the phone is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance.

It sold for $599 when it first launched in the US in July, 2020. But if you don’t mind buying a phone from a company that doesn’t make smartphones anymore, you can now pick one up for just over half that price.

LG will also roll out security updates for the LG Wing dual-screen smartphone soon, as well as several members of the company’s Q series line of phones.

Majority of Ukrainian hospitals could run out of oxygen today as omicron rages: WHO

COVID cases have increased 555% recently, and oxygen shortage risks thousands of lives.

The majority of Ukrainian hospitals could run out of life-saving medical oxygen as soon as today, putting at risk the lives of thousands of critically ill patients amid the pandemic, the World Health Organization warned Sunday.

The United Nations agency said it is looking into ways to increase supplies, which would likely require a safe-transit corridor through Poland. "It is imperative to ensure that lifesaving medical supplies—including oxygen—reach those who need them," WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr. Hans Kluge said in a joint statement.

Amid the Russian attack and invasion, trucks are currently unable to transport oxygen supplies from producers to hospitals across Ukraine, including the capital of Kyiv, the WHO reported. The onslaught is also hampering the production of medical oxygen in the country. Several medical oxygen generator manufacturers are running low on zeolite, a critical production component that is imported. Safe transport of zeolite into Ukraine is also needed. Drs. Tedros and Kluge also warned that patients are at risk because hospitals are facing power shortages, and ambulances transporting patients are at risk of being caught in crossfire.

Lenovo’s Chromebook Duet is a Chrome OS tablet with a detachable keyboard and support for a pressure-sensitive pen. Since launching in 2020, the 10 inch tablet been one of the most affordable 2-in-1 Chromebooks around, especially since it often goes on sale for $50 to $75 off the $300 list price.

Last year Lenovo expanded the Chromebook Duet lineup with the larger, pricier Chromebook Duet 5 which has a 13.3 inch OLED display and a $430 starting price. Now the company is splitting the difference with the new Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook, an 11 inch model coming in May for $399 and up.

Lenovo is positioning the new tablet as a follow-up to the original 10 inch model, despite the fact that it has a starting price that’s $100 higher. I’m hopeful that the price will either fall quickly or that Lenovo will continue selling the 10 inch version for a while even after the new 11 inch version.

But the new IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook does appear to be an upgrade in many ways. It sports an 11 inch, 2K touchscreen LCD display with a 5;3 aspect ratio and support for an optional pen. The tablet is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 chip as its 13.3 inch sibling. And it supports up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
