Kids learn valuable skills and get to fix all the Chromebooks they break.
Hey kids! Want to help out your school and learn a bit about electronics repair at the same time? Google is launching a Chromebook repair program for schools. Chromebooks are wildly popular in schools due to their simple OS and easy management, but the hardware in any education environment really takes a beating. So why not learn to repair them yourself?
Google's new repair site has a guide on setting up Chromebook repair facilities, recommending schools set up a dedicated space for repairs, a front desk for "customers" to drop off broken devices and describe issues, and a skill-tracker board for students.
Acer and Lenovo are the only two OEMs participating in the repair program, and Google has disassembly instructions up on the Chromebook repair site for select models. The repair guides are great, with tons of detailed pictures and drawings showing the location of every screw and cable and instructions for how to make a USB recovery stick. The guides also warn that you'll be voiding your warranty if you attempt a repair, but you're probably not doing self-repair if you still have a warranty.
The U.S. Government is seeking a five-year prison sentence for Gary Bowser, a member of the infamous Nintendo modding group Team-Xecuter. The prosecution argues that a tough sentence is needed to send a clear message to other criminals. Bowser’s attorneys disagree and note that their client was used by other group members who, unlike him, probably made millions.

Hacking group Team-Xecuter was a thorn in the side of major gaming companies for many years.
The group offered hardware and software solutions that allowed people to install and play unofficial games and pirated copies on various consoles, including the popular Nintendo Switch.
For many years Nintendo attempted to stop the group but failed to do so. This eventually prompted the U.S. Department of Justice to step in and following a thorough investigation, three members of the group were indicted in 2020.
The criminal prosecution effectively shut down the group but only one member, Gary Bowser, was detained. The Canadian was arrested in the Dominican Republic and deported to the US soon after.
Bowser is perhaps best known through his nickname GaryOPA, the operator and a frequent writer on the website “MaxConsole,” which regularly reviewed Team-Xecuter hardware and other hacking tools.
According to the indictment, Bowser was more than just a writer. The Government views him as part of the Team-Xecuter conspiracy. Among other things, he allegedly advertised and trafficked circumvention devices, while maintaining regular contact with resellers throughout the world.
Bowser initially denied any wrongdoing but, after a few months, he pleaded guilty and signed a plea agreement with the U.S. Government. In addition, he also admitted guilt in a civil lawsuit filed by Nintendo, where he agreed to pay $10 million in restitution.
After the guilty plea, the scale of the sentence is the only question remaining in the criminal case. This week, both the prosecution and defense submitted their sentencing recommendations to the Washington federal court.
According to U.S. Attorney Nicholas Brown, a five-year prison sentence is warranted in this case. This severe punishment is justified for various reasons, including the scope of the damages attributed to Team-Xecutor in the gaming industry.
“Team Xecuter’s products targeted several companies over the course of almost a decade, resulting in tens of millions of dollars of loss. Defendant Gary Bowser played a critical role in the marketing, sale, and distribution of the products that caused that loss,” the U.S. Attorney writes.
The U.S. also believes that Mr. Bowser is a potential recidivist and that a significant sentence is needed to make sure that he doesn’t pick up his old line of work when he’s released.
At the same time, the five-year sentence should serve as a warning to others who are tempted to continue the work of Team-Xecuter. This includes those who have thus far remained out of sight.
“A five-year sentence will put potential recruits on notice that engaging in this type of criminal conduct will subject them to significant prison sentences.” the U.S. Attorney writes.
Interestingly, the U.S. Attorney points to several news articles that covered this case. This is to illustrate that the industry is watching the case closely, and perhaps prospective criminals are too.
“There can be no question that any sentence imposed in this case will be widely disseminated within the video gaming community, as this case is being watched closely
by the industry.”
The overall message in the sentencing recommendation is that Mr. Bowser should serve as an example. While he might not have been the leader of the group, he was a crucial part of it and should be punished accordingly.
Mr. Bowser’s lawyers see things in a different light and are asking the federal court to limit the sentence to 19 months of which 16 have already been served.
The defense admits that Team-Xecutor was a criminal operation that caused a lot of damage. However, they argue that Mr. Bowser was used by other members of the group who reaped most of the benefits.
“Mr. Bowser was used by Max Louarn. Unlike his co-defendants, Mr. Bowser used his real identity on the website. He took all the risk, and reaped the smallest profit,” the defense writes.
To illustrate this point the defense argues that the Team-Xecuter group reportedly generated tens of millions of dollars in revenue, while Mr. Bowser was paid ‘only’ $500 to $1000 a month.
Based on these and other arguments, Mr. Bowser’s lawyers hope that the court will agree to a 19-month sentence instead. Given the circumstances, that’s already quite a significant sentence, they argue.
The court will now review the sentencing recommendations from both sides. It is expected to reach a final decision in the near future.

The ASUS ROG Flow Z13 is a 2.6 pound Windows tablet with a 13.4 inch display, a built-in kickstand, and support for a detachable keyboard. While those specs might make the tablet sound like an Asus-made alternative to the Microsoft Surface Pro, the specs tell a different story: the ROG Flow X13 is designed first and foremost for gamers.
Under the hood it has an Intel Core i9-12900H processor and NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti graphics. It’s also compatible with the Asus XG Mobile external graphics dock if you need more horsepower. First introduced during the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the Asus ROG Flow X13 is now available for pre-order in select countries including Canada and the UK.
Best Buy Canada is taking pre-orders for $2500, which gets you a model with 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 120 Hz, 1920 x 1200 pixel display. Customers in the United States will be able to purchase a model with the same specs for $1900 eventually, but it’s currently listed as “coming soon” on the Best Buy US website and isn’t yet available for pre-order.
Meanwhile customers in the UK can pre-order a model with a 3840 x 2400 pixel, 60 Hz display for £2,998 ($4000).
According to the Asus website, there may also be lower-priced models with Intel Core i7-12700H or Core i5-12500H processors in the future (the Core i5 model also lacks NVIDIA graphics, which means it’ll likely offer longer battery life when used as a standalone tablet, but gamers may want to invest in the external graphics dock).
Common features across all models include LPDDR5 memory, PCIe 4.0 M.2 2230 SSDs, backlit detachable keyboards with RGB lighting, fingerprint readers, 8MP cameras, stereo speakers, 3 microphones, support for WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and 56 Wh batteries and 100W USB-C power adapters.
The tablets have Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, USB 2.0 Type-A, 3.5mm audio, and microSD card reader ports plus a ROG XG Mobile Interface for the optional graphics dock.
The Asus ROG Flow X13 measures 11.9″ x 8″ x 0.5″ and while models with NVIDIA graphics weight 2.6 pounds, the Core i5 configuration with only Intel Iris Xe graphics weighs a little under 2.5 pounds.
While the tablet hasn’t begun shipping yet, Russian website mobiletelefon published a hand-on video that provides a pretty good idea of what to expect in terms of real-world usage.

7.9-inch monitor feeds our obsession with feeds.
In the world of displays, no one size or shape fits all. Over the past few years, we've seen more laptop screens play with aspect ratios that provide more vertical height than more traditional 16:9 screens. But when it comes to everlasting newsfeeds, endless social media feeds, and those captivatingly long articles, something like the 5:16 Thanko TL Portrait Display really stands tall.
Released today and spotted by Tom's Hardware via Japanese site PC Watch, the monitor from Thanko, a gadget brand owned by Sanko, is a 0.7 lb (334 g) portable display. The 7.9-inch screen has 400×1280 resolution, for a high pixel density of 169.75 pixels per inch.
Still, it's unclear what sort of image quality you can expect from this ultra-tall display. The product page doesn't provide information on things like panel type, contrast ratio, or brightness.
“This is just a test for research right now.”
Twitter, long known for its slow and careful evolution of its core product, the tweet, is rolling out a worldwide test that would allow users to downvote replies, a feature that could significantly change how the service works.
The concept of downvoting posts and comments has been a staple of the Internet for decades, appearing on sites such as Slashdot, Reddit, and Ars Technica. The concept is simple—users who find issue with a post can vote it down.
“We learned a lot about the types of replies you don’t find relevant and we’re expanding this test—more of you on web and soon iOS and Android will have the option to use reply downvoting,” Twitter said in a tweet.
