The Epic Games Store is giving away Galactic Civilizations III for free today. Amazon and ScreenPix are running a deal that lets Prime Video members stream movies from ScreenPix for $1 per month for up to six months. And HBO Max is offering a rare discount – you can save 20% on a monthly subscription whether you sign up for ad-free or ad-supported tiers.
That brings the monthly price for HBO Max with ads down to $8 per month while HBO Max Ad-Free is now $12. You’ll need to sign up by January 25, 2022 to score this discount. Fun fact – this is actually a better deal than you’d get if you signed up for a full year, as that ongoing deal is the equivalent of paying $8.33 or $12.50 per month.
If you lived in the Central Andes circa 850 CE, you definitely wanted to party with the Wari.

Lacing the beer served at their feasts with hallucinogens may have helped an ancient Peruvian people known as the Wari forge political alliances and expand their empire, according to a new paper published in the journal Antiquity. Recent excavations at a remote Wari outpost called Quilcapampa unearthed seeds from the vilca tree that can be used to produce a potent hallucinogenic drug. The authors think the Wari held one big final blowout before the site was abandoned.
“This is, to my knowledge, the first finding of vilca at a Wari site where we can get a glimpse of its use,” co-author Matthew Biwer, an archaeobotanist at Dickinson College, told Gizmodo. “Vilca seeds or residue has been found in burial tombs before, but we could only assume how it was used. These findings point to a more nuanced understanding of Wari feasting and politics and how vilca was implicated in these practices.”
The Wari empire lasted from around 500 CE to 1100 CE in the central highlands of Peru. There is some debate among scholars as to whether the network of roadways linking various provincial cities constituted a bona fide empire as opposed to a loose economic network. But the Wari's construction of complex, distinctive architecture and the 2013 discovery of an imperial royal tomb lend credence to the Wari's empire status. The culture began to decline around 800 CE, largely due to drought. Many central buildings were blocked up, suggesting people thought they might return if the rains did, and there is archaeological evidence of possible warfare and raiding in the empire's final days as the local infrastructure collapsed and supply chains failed.

“Free with subscription” perk is easy (and fun) to complete before trial expires.

Nintendo mixes cool, weird, and ho-hum perks into its $20/year Switch Online subscription service, including one we don't generally talk about: limited-time game trials. Other modern gaming services include this sort of thing, particularly "Days With Gold" on Xbox Live, and the idea is that subscribers can temporarily test unlocked retail versions of games for no additional cost.
Generally, these deals range from intriguing to annoying, though they're at their worst when they feel like glorified advertisements for online games: Try a game for as little as 72 hours, get hooked, then buy it when the promotional timer runs out and locks the game. This week, however, a new deal exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers gets my wholehearted recommendation.
Starting right now—as of 1 pm EST today, January 13—the 2019 Switch puzzle game Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is fully unlocked for anyone already paying for the $20/year NSO service. Its free trial lasts for a little over seven days, expiring at 2:59 am EST on Friday, January 21.
What’s another few months after a delayed and drawn-out trial?

Elizabeth Holmes’ trial was delayed for months, and now her sentencing will be similarly held up. The judge in her trial scheduled the hearing for late September.
US District Judge Edward Davila’s order, issued yesterday, set sentencing for September 26. He also set aside June 16 to address motions that Holmes’ attorneys are likely to file in which they may ask for the conviction to be reversed or for a new trial.
Holmes was convicted earlier this month of three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The jury was hung on three counts, which prosecutors moved to dismiss in a filing made jointly with Holmes’ attorneys. The former CEO of Theranos was acquitted of the remaining charges of wire fraud against patients.

The ONEXPLAYER Mini is a handheld gaming PC with an Intel Core i7-1195G7 processor, 16GB of RAM and at least 512GB of storage. With a 7 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel touchscreen IPS LCD display surrounded by game controllers, it’s basically a Windows-powered alternative to a Nintendo Switch.
The 7 inch model has a list price of $1259 and up, but folks who buy one within the first 24 hours (by 12:00PM Eastern time on Friday, January 14, 2022), will be able to save up to 17% and pick one up for $1039 and up.
The little computer measures 262 x 108 x 23mm (10.3″ x 4.3″ x 0.9″) and weighs 589 grams (1.3 pounds). That makes it smaller and lighter than either the original ONEXPLAYER or most other current-gen handheld gaming computers including the AYA Neo or Valve Steam Deck.
Other features include DDR4-4266 memory, PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe storage, a 40.25Wh battery and 100W USB-C fast charger, support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, and ports including:
2 x USB Type-C (full function for power, data, and video)
1 x USB 3.0 Type-A
1 x 3.5mm audio
The handheld gaming PC has stereo speakers, dual vibration motors, game controllers with dual linear triggers and a cooling system that includes an aluminum heat sink, two copper cooling tubes, and a fan.
One Netbook says you should expect up to 8 hours of video playback time from the 10,455 mAh battery, but expect that figure to go way down if you’re
Optional accessories include a carrying case (which is included for folks who order during the 1-day launch promotion), and a foldable keyboard. An official docking station is also in the works.
Keep in mind that even folks who do get in on the launch promotion will end up with a device that costs substantially more than a Valve Steam Deck despite having less graphics processing power. And while One Netbook may have more of a track record of delivering first-party hardware than Valve, it’s also a relatively small Chinese company that doesn’t typically offer the same level of support and service to customers in the west as you might find from companies with a larger presence outside of China. So proceed with caution before placing an order.
That said, The ONEXPLAYER Mini does ship with Windows 11 rather than a custom Linux distribution like the Steam Deck. It has a higher-resolution display (for better or worse). And it’s available with up to 2TB of storage.
And when I got a chance to review the original 8.4 inch ONEXPLAYER handheld gaming PC, I was quite impressed with the build quality and performance, and the ONEXPLAYER Mini’s hardware is nearly identical in most respects. So there are probably worse ways to spend $1039 or more… assuming that’s the kind of money you’re willing to spend on a handheld gaming device in the first place.

Ever wanted to try out a Linux-based operating system like postmarketOS on your phone… but didn’t want to overwrite the operating system that’s already installed? Now it’s possible.
As reported by TuxPhones, a recent postmarketOS update has added support for “network boot,” which essentially lets you plug an Android phone with an unlocked bootloader into your computer with a USB cable and boot the mobile Linux distro on your phone. Just unplug and reboot to return to Android.
This works similarly to the way that a LiveCD or LiveUSB allows you to boot a computer from removable storage without writing anything to your PC’s primary storage. But while most desktop and laptop computers do this by loading the operating system into RAM, the postmarketOS network boot option basically means that while the Linux kernel is loaded into RAM, the operating system files stay on your PC – so unplugging your phone will break the connection.
In other words, it’s a neat way to try out postmarketOS without installing it. But it’s of limited use, since you won’t be able to walk more than a foot or two away from your computer.
Theoretically it could be possible to to load the entire operating system into RAM on devices that have enough memory, allowing you to run postmarketOS or other Linux distributions without the need to keep your phone tethered to a PC with a USB cable, but the code to make that happen doesn’t seem to have been merged into the operating system yet.
Unifying Windows’ still-jumbled look and feel is a priority for Microsoft.

Improving Windows 11's visual and functional consistency is shaping up to be a major priority for Microsoft this year, as evinced by the continued updates to core apps like Notepad, Paint, and Media Player, as well as the ongoing effort to move advanced settings out of the old Windows 7-era Control Panels and into the modern Settings app. Restoring some flexibility to redesigned areas of the OS like the Start menu and Taskbar has also been a focus.
The latest Windows 11 Insider build released to Dev channel users continues this work, updating the overlays for volume, brightness, and other settings to match Windows 11's more rounded look. The new indicators pop up in the bottom center of your screen rather than the top left, will match your light or dark mode setting, and, like the Start menu and taskbar, they use Mica styling to match the color of your desktop wallpaper.
The other changes in this preview build are pretty small; "Apps and Features" in the Windows + X shortcut menu has been relabeled as "Installed apps," the Voice Access accessibility feature can be pinned to the Taskbar and Start menu, and the Clock app can be uninstalled. Exciting times!

Dropbox is working on its promise to support M1-based Macs natively, as a recently released beta version of the company's app for macOS supports Apple Silicon in the current MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac, and Mac Mini.
Apple debuted its M1 silicon in 2020. Since then, Dropbox has yet to offer a version of its file-hosting service that runs natively on computers using Apple's chips, frustrating some professional users who rely on and pay for the program for work.
Without the beta, M1 users are required to use Rosetta 2, software that translates apps with x86_64 instructions for Apple's Arm-based silicon, in order to use the Dropbox app. Running Rosetta 2, however, can generally have an effect on battery life, memory, and performance. For most, Rosetta 2 is a sufficient solution for running Intel-based applications. And it's possible that some lesser-known apps will never get transitioned to M1 systems at all.
