The United States reported over one million new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, setting a global record for a single-day total as the ultra-transmissible omicron coronavirus variant continues its savage spread.

The daily high likely includes a backlog of cases from the holiday weekend. But with more people relying on at-home testing for identifying COVID-19 infections, the number is still probably an underrepresentation of recent cases.

Though cases are rising nationwide, the Eastern US is seeing the highest case rates and steepest increases. New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC, have the top-three highest infection rates in the country. Louisiana, Maryland, and Alabama are reporting the largest increase in cases over the last two weeks.

The Razer Blade 14 (2022) is a gaming laptop that stuffs a lot of horsepower into a compact chassis. The notebook measures just 12.59″ x 8.66″ x 0.66″ and weighs just 3.92 pounds, but it houses an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX octa-core processor, 16GB of DDR5-4800MHz RAM, and a 1TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD.

Razer is taking pre-orders for the new Razer Blade 14 for $2000 and up, and the laptop should begin shipping March 17, 2022.

For the starting price you’ll get a model with a 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS LCD display with a 144 Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics with 6GB of GDDR6 RAM, 16GB of memory, and a 1TB SSD.

But Razer will also offer models with beefier specs including an 2560 x 1440 pixel 165 Hz display panel and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 Ti graphics options, but those upgrades will cost you: a top-of-the-line model sells for $3500.

Each model has slim bezels around the display (4.7mm), matte screens, and support for AMD FreeSync.

The laptops feature backlit keyboards with per-key RGB lighting and support for Razer’s Chroma lighting effects. Razer says the keycaps on this year’s model are also larger than the previous-gen, with no more half-sized Shift keys, for example. The notebook also has a glass-covered Precision touchpad.

Razer has updated the camera to a 1080p camera with support for Windows Hello face recognition, and the laptops has stereo speakers and support for THX Spatial Audio.

Ports include:

  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (with DisplayPort 1.4 and USB Power Deilvery support)
  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
  • 1 x HDMI 2.1
  • 1 x 3.5mm combo audio jack
  • 1 x power port (320W)

Wireless capabilities include support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, and the Razer Blade 14 (2022) is powered by a 61.6Whr battery and comes with a 230W power supply.

If you’re hoping to perform any upgrades, Razer notes that the SSD is user replaceable, but the 16GB of RAM is soldered to the motherboard.

Starting next month you may be able to buy a gaming laptop with one of two new mobile graphics solutions from NVIDIA.

The company says the first notebooks with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics will be available starting February 1 for $1499 and up, while the new NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti GPU will launch the same day in notebooks with starting prices around $2,499.

NVIDIA says the new RTX 3080 Ti mobile GPU is its fastest graphics processor for laptops to date, with 16GB of GDDR6 memory and support for gaming at 120 fps or higher at resolutions up to 1440p. The company says this GPU is faster than its desktop-class Titan RTX graphics cards.

Unsurprisingly the cheaper RTX 3070 Ti mobile GPU is a little less impressive, topping out at around 100 fps on a 1440p display, but NVIDIA says folks moving from a laptop with a previous-gen NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super GPU will see 1.7X better performance on laptops with the latest GPU.

NVIDIA is also updating its Max-Q technology which allows mobile GPUs to balance performance and efficiency for longer battery life. 4th-gen Max-Q technology includes a new CPU Booster feature that will allow the GPU to tap into your laptop’s CPU to adjust performance, power consumption, and thermals in order to give more breathing room to the GPU when needed.

There’s also support for disabling some GPU cores during overclocking thanks to a new Rapid Core Scaling feature, and Battery Boost 2.0 technology that will allow users to prioritize long battery life over high frame rates while gaming.

Lenovo is introducing a new ThinkPad Z series of thin and light laptops that drop the company’s classic black-with-red-highlights design and instead offer options including bronze and arctic grey or recycled black vegan leather.

They’re also among the company’s first laptops powered by AMD’s new Ryzen 6000 processors, and the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 even has an exclusive AMD Rembrandt chip that won’t be available on any other laptops, while the ThinkPad Z16 will ship with higher-performance Ryzen 6000H processor options. Both laptops should be available starting in May, 2022.

Lenovo ThinkPad Z13

This compact notebook features a 13.3 inch, 16:10 display available with WQXGA 2.8K OLED or WUXGA IPS LCD display panel options. Lenovo says with slim bezels around all sides of the display, the notebook has a 91.6% screen-to-body ratio.

It measures just 0.55 inches thick and weighs 2.76 pounds, and features a 40 Wh battery as well as support for rapid charging.

The notebook is powered by an exclusive AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 6860Z processor featuring AMD Zen 3+ CPU cores and RDNA 2 integrated graphics.

Other features include a full HD webcam with a 1.4µm sensor and dual-array microphones for improved video conferencing, an all-glass palm rest with a 120mm (4.7 inch) touchpad, and Lenovo’s signature TrackPoint pointing stick in the center of the keyboard (but without the usual buttons above the touchpad that you’d use to click while using the TrackPoint stick).

The laptop supports Dolby Atmos sound, has a fingerprint reader integrat3ed into the power button, and supports up to 32GB of LPDDR5 memory and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen 3 solid state storage. There are two USB 4.0 Type-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the laptop supports WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and 4G LTE Cat 16.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 will be available in May for $1549 and up.

Lenovo ThinkPad Z16

This 4.3 pound notebook measures 0.62 inches thick and features a 16 inch, 16:10 display with a 92.3% screen-to-body ratio and support for 4K OLED or WUXGA IPS LCD displays.

Lenovo says the laptop will be available with Ryzen Pro H-Series processor options and there’s also support for an optional AMD Radeon RX 6500M discrete GPU.

The laptop’s larger size also allowed Lenovo to cram a bit more into the chassis. This 16 inch laptop has a 70 Whr battery, three USB 3.0 Type-C ports, an audio jack, and an SD card reader. While it also tops out at 32GB of LPDDR5 memory, Lenovo will offer the ThinkPad 16Z with up to 2TB of PCIe Gen 4 solid state storage.

The Lenovo Thinkpad Z16 will be available in May 2022 for $2099 and up.

At a CES press conference this morning, AMD announced the RX 6500 XT, a budget version of the 6000-series line of desktop gaming GPUs launched in 2020. The new card will be available on January 19 starting at $199—if you can find it amid continuing chip shortages, that is.

AMD is touting the 6500 XT's "fastest sustained GPU clock rates ever" at 2.6 GHz, the inclusion of 16 compute units with ray accelerators, and the card's 16MB of Infinity Cache, which can provide faster effective bandwidth to other components. Other 6000-series cards sport anywhere from 32 to 80 compute units and 32 to 128 MB of Infinity Cache, making the 6500 XT a decidedly low-end option (as if the price wasn't enough of a clue). Still, the card should provide frame-rate boosts of 23 to 59 percent over the aging RX 570 on popular games running at 1080p, according to AMD's presentation.

AMD also announced a new line of RX 6000S chips specifically focused on "light and thin" gaming laptops (i.e., those weighing less than 4.5 pounds). The three chips in this line are being optimized with efficiency in mind and should be able to provide 80 to 100 fps gameplay at "high" detail settings for recent "AAA and esports titles," according to AMD.

Upper stage from failed Russian rocket to make uncontrolled re-entry

The troubles with the long-in-development Angara A5 continue.

The Russian space program has spent more than two decades developing the Angara family of rockets, and government officials have expressed high hopes for the Angara A5 heavy lift variant. It is hoped that the Angara A5 rocket can replace the venerable Proton booster, which is more than half a century old and in recent years has had reliability issues.

But the long-running development program has been slow. The Angara A5 finally made its debut in 2014, successfully lofting a 2-ton mass simulator into geosynchronous orbit. But then, six years passed before a second development flight in December 2020. This flight was again successful, with the rocket putting a 2.4-ton mass simulator into orbit.

Why did it take so long between test flights? Costs, production issues, and a lack of demand all seem to have been factors. Although the Russian government has not been forthcoming, the expense of building the Angara A5 was probably the biggest factor. The Russian space program had hoped to make the Angara A5 competitive with SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket for commercial launches, but Russian media reported that Angara production costs to date have been about $100 million per vehicle.
