Study: 1960 ramjet design for interstellar travel—a sci-fi staple—is unfeasible

In Poul Anderson's 1970 novel Tau Zero, a starship crew seeks to travel to the star Beta Virginis in hopes of colonizing a new planet. The ship's mode of propulsion was a so-called "Bussard ramjet," an actual (though hypothetical) means of propulsion which had been proposed by physicist Robert W. Bussard just a decade earlier. Now, physicists have revisited this unusual mechanism for interstellar travel in a new paper published in the journal Acta Astronautica, and alas, they have found the ramjet wanting. It's feasible from a pure physics standpoint, but the associated engineering challenges are currently insurmountable, the authors concluded.

A ramjet is basically a jet engine that "breathes" air. The best analog for the fundamental mechanism is that it exploits the engine's forward motion to compress incoming air without the need for compressors, making ramjet engines lighter and simpler than their turbojet counterparts. A French inventor named Rene Lorin received a patent in 1913 for his concept of ramjet (aka, a flying stovepipe), although he failed to build a viable prototype. Two years later, Albert Fonó proposed a ramjet propulsion unit to increase the range of gun-launched projectiles and eventually was granted a German patent in 1932.

A basic ramjet has three components: an air intake, a combustor, and a nozzle. Hot exhaust from fuel combustion flows through the nozzle. The pressure of the combustion must be higher than the pressure at the exit of the nozzle in order to maintain a steady flow, which a ramjet engine achieves by "ramming" external air into the combustor with the forward speed of whatever vehicle is being powered by the engine. There is no need to carry oxygen on board. The downside is that ramjets can only produce thrust if the vehicle is already moving, so they require an assisted takeoff using rockets. As such, ramjets are most useful as a means of acceleration, such as for ramjet-powered missiles or for increasing the range of artillery shells.

Lenovo’s newest ThinkBook 14 laptop is a compact notebook with support for up to a 2880 x 1800 pixel 90 Hz display, up to a 45-watt Intel Alder Lake processor, and up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 graphics, making it one of the first laptops announced to feature that particular mobile GPU.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 4 Gen 4+ should be available in April for $839 and up.

Of course, that starting price will likely get you more modest specs. The laptop is also available with 1920 x 1200 pixel and 2240 x 1400 pixel 60 Hz display options, for example, and while it supports up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 2TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage, I doubt you’ll get that on an entry-level model.

Discrete graphics is also described as an “up to” feature, suggesting that lower-priced models may have less powerful graphics or no discrete GPU at all. The NVIDIA RTX 20500, which was announced just last month, is basically a step up from NVIDIA’s entry-level MX550 and MX570 discrete graphics, but not quite as powerful as the RTX 3050 graphics, which means it should give you a bit of a boost over Intel’s integrated graphics, but the ThinkBook 14 is very much not a gaming laptop.

And that’s hardly surprising for a notebook that measures 0.63 inches thick and which has a starting weight of just 3.15 pounds. In fact, I’m a bit surprised that we’ve reached a point where PC makers are able to fit 45-watt processors and discrete graphics into laptops this thin and light.

The ThinkBook Plus 14 will be available with 46.5Wh or 62 Wh battery options, 65-watt or 100W USB-C power adapters, and up to a FHD camera with an IR camera for face recognition and a privacy shutter. And there’s a Time of Flight Sensor that can detect your presence to automatically lock or unlock the device and a fingerprint sensor integrated with the power button.

Ports include:

  • 1 x Thunderbolt 4
  • 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
  • 1 x USB 2.0
  • 1 x HDMI 2.0b
  • 1 x Ethernet
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio
  • 1 x microSD card reader

The laptop will also be available with up to WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5 support.

The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus 14 Gen 4+ has an “arctic grey” chassis made of anodized aluminum.

Lenovo is also introducing a new ThinkBook Plus 16 Gen 4+ with similar specs, but support for up to a 16 inch, 2560 x 120 Hz display and 57 Wh or 71 Wh battery options. It also has a numeric keypad to the right of the keyboard.

The 4 pound ThinkBook Plus 16 Gen 4+ will also ship in April with prices starting at $859.

Lawsuit: Facebook recommendations helped extremists meet and plan murder

The sister of a slain federal security officer has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Facebook owner Meta. The lawsuit alleges that the killing of Dave Patrick Underwood in May 2020 "was not a random act of violence" but rather "the culmination of an extremist plot hatched and planned on Facebook by two men who Meta connected through Facebook's groups infrastructure and its use of algorithms designed and intended to increase user engagement and, correspondingly, Meta's profits."

The lawsuit says that Meta "helped build" the antigovernment "boogaloo" community, which includes white supremacists, militia promoters, and far-right conspiracy theorists. This community "supported [the] criminal planning" of Underwood's murderer and his accomplice, the complaint says, accusing Facebook of negligence.

The lawsuit was filed yesterday by Angela Underwood Jacobs in California Superior Court for Alameda County, and it seeks damages of at least $25,000. The lawsuit notes that Dave Underwood "was a Federal Protective Services Officer working under a contract with the Department of Homeland Security to provide security" at a federal building and courthouse in Oakland. On May 29, 2020, during protests over the police killing of George Floyd, the 53-year-old Underwood was stationed in a guard post outside the building and was killed in a drive-by shooting. He was shot in the neck and right flank and endured "extreme pain and suffering" before dying in the emergency room, the lawsuit said.

GameStop stock takes off as plans for NFT marketplace come into focus

Two of 2021's strangest trends are coming together Thursday evening as GameStop's stock surges on a report that it is working to establish an NFT and cryptocurrency marketplace alongside partner game developers and publishers.

The news, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, suggests GameStop has a 20-person unit working on the online marketplace, set to launch later this year, which will offer in-game goods as supply-limited, cryptographically signed NFTs. In addition, the Journal's sources suggest GameStop may be preparing to invest "tens of millions of dollars" in crypto-related companies, including the development of games that use the blockchain.

Shares of GameStop stock, which today closed at its lowest point since last March after a six-week slide, were up sharply in after-hours trading immediately following the report. As of this writing, the stock's value had increased over 30 percent in a little more than an hour after the market closed, bringing to mind images of the "meme stock" rallies of last January.

Asus unveiled four new portable monitors during the Consumer Electronics Show this week, including one model with an OLED display panel, one that supports wireless screen mirroring, and two with support for pen input – including a model aimed at digital artists that has a color-accurate display panel and a built-in Asus Dial control.

The new displays should be available later this year, with pricing details available closer to release.

Asus ProArt Display PA169CDV

Possibly the most impressive new portable display from Asus, this 15.6 inch monitor features a 4K IPS LCD display panel with 10-bit, 100% sRGB color gamut. It’s been PANTONE Validated and Calman Verified for Delta E < 2 color accuracy.

The display also works with a Wacom EMR pen for pressure-sensitive input, has an Asus Dial built into the left side of the display, allowing you to control functions in apps including Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, and After Effects.

In addition to pen support, the screen can detect 10-finger multitouch, allowing you to also use it as a capacitive touchscreen display for interacting with art or graphic design software (or anything else). Since the Wacom pen draws power from the screen, you’ll never need to change a battery in the pen.

There are two kickstands for the display, one that raises the screen for use as a standard display, and another that you can use to lay the display down at a slight angle for writing or drawing.

The display has two USB-C ports and an HDMI port for connecting to a PC or other gear.

Asus ZenScreen OLED MQ16AH

This 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel OLED display with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and Delta E <2 color has a 1ms response time and support for HDR.

It has a mini HDMI port and three USB-C ports plus an integrated proximity sensor can dim the display when you’re not nearby in order to save power.

The display weighs 620 grams, or just under 1.4 pounds.

Asus ZenScreen Ink MB14AHD

This 14 inch full HD IPS LCD display display has two USB-C ports and a micro HDMI port, a built-in kickstand, and support for both 10-finger multiple touch input and support for pen input – it comes with an active stylus, but should work with any pen that supports Microsoft Pen Protocol v2.0.

Asus notes that the ZenScreen Ink is about the size of an 8.5″ x 11″ sheet of paper, which should make it comfortable for sketching.

The display also supports automatic screen rotation, so you can use it in portrait or landscape orientations. And the kickstand has a “stepless” design which allows it to be folded to pretty much any angle up to 10 degrees.

When used with a PC that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, you only need to run a single USB-C cable from your computer to the ZenScreen Ink in order to use both display and pen/touch functionality. But for devices that don’t support DP Alt Mode, you can use an HDMI cable for video and a USB cable for input.

Asus ZenScreen Go MB16AWP

While this 15.6 inch, FHD IPS LCD monitor also has two USB-C ports and a mini HDMI port, you don’t necessarily need to use any of them because the ZenScreen Go also supports wireless screen mirroring for Android or iOS devices or computers running Windows 10 or Windows 11.

And if you really want to leave your wires at home, you don’t even need a power cable for short sessions. The ZenScreen Go has a 7,800 mAh battery that should allow it to run for up to 3 hours on a charge.

The display also has a 1-watt stereo speaker and a 3.5mm audio jack in case you want to plug in headphones. And like the ZenScreen Ink, this 15.6 inch display has a G-sensor that can detect screen orientation for automatic rotation.

While the display’s wireless capabilities are what make it stand out, you can always plug it in. It accepts video input via mini HDMI or USB-C, and you can use the second USB-C port to charge the battery while it’s connected to a PC or other device.
