As expected, Oppo is getting into the foldable smartphone space. The new Oppo Find N features a 5.49 inch cover display, allowing you to hold it in one hand for use as a phone. But you can also unfold the phone to reveal a larger 7.1 inch display that effectively turns the phone into a tablet.

In other words, it’s Oppo’s answer to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. But Oppo’s phone has a few distinctive touches. It’s up for pre-order in China for about $1210 and up and should be generally available in that country starting December 23, 2021.

At 275 grams, the Oppo Find N is on the heavy side for a smartphone, but reasonably light for a tablet. It’s also about the same weight as the 271 gram Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. But Oppo’s phone is a little smaller (the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a 6.2 inch cover display and 7.6 inch interior screen), and a significantly lower starting price (Samsung’s phone currently sells for around $1650 and up).

But Oppo says what really makes its phone different is the flexible AMOLED display, which is a 7.1 inch, 1920 x 1792 pixel screen with a 9:8.4 aspect ratio and 120 Hz refresh rate. It also has a waterdrop-style hinge that the company says allows the phone to be folded with no gap between the front and back sections. When unfolded, the crease is also said to be much less noticeable (it’s wider, but more subtle than on Samsung’s phones).

The screen is designed for durability. It should survive being folded and unfolded at least 200,000 times.

The cover display is a 1972 x 988 pixel, 60 Hz AMOLED screen with an 18:9 (also known as 2:1) aspect ratio and relatively slim bezels, making the Oppo Find N look like a fairly normal (if rather thick) phone when folded.

Other specs include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 memory, and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

The phone’s camera system includes a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera, a 16MP IMX481 ultra-wide camera, and a 13MP Samsung S5K3M5 2X telephoto camera. There’s also a 32MP IMX615 front-facing camera.

Oppo’s phone has a 4,500 mAh battery and support for 33W fast wired charging or 15W wireless charging. There’s a fingerprint reader on the side of the phone. And it supports 5G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC. The Oppo Find N will ship with Android 11 and the company’s ColorOS 12 user interface.

There’s no word on if or when you’ll be able to buy an Oppo Find N outside of China though.

No jab, no job: Google will fire unvaccinated employees

Less than 1 percent of employees have strong reservations about vaccination.

Google is giving employees until January 18 to prove that they’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19 or apply for an exemption, according to a report from CNBC.

News of the requirement broke late Tuesday, but Google employees have been aware of the policy since December 3, when an internal memo alerted them to the deadline. If employees don’t upload proof of vaccination by then, they’ll be placed on paid administrative leave for 30 days and unpaid personal leave for six months after that. If they still haven’t shown proof of vaccination after seven months, they’ll be fired.

“We expect that almost all roles at Google in the US will fall within the scope of the executive order,” the memo said. “Anyone entering a Google building must be fully vaccinated or have an approved accommodation that allows them to work or come onsite.”

The PinePhone Pro began shipping to developers earlier this month. And soon it’ll be available for anyone to purchase.

Pine64 has announced that it will begin taking orders for the $399 Linux-friendly smartphone in late December or early January.

First announced in October, the PinePhone Pro is a smartphone with a 6 inch HD+ display, a Rockchip RK3399S hexa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage. While those specs put the phone in mid-range territory, they aren’t the things that make the PinePhone Pro stand out.

Pine64’s new smartphone has a few features that seem like throwbacks in 2021… but in a good way. It has a removable 3,000 mAh battery, a headset jack, and a microSD card reader. The phone also has physical switches that allow you to disable hardware including the cameras, mic, headphones, and wireless features if you want privacy.

And the phone is designed to be hackable. It will ship with Manjaro Linux and the KDE Plasma Mobile user interface pre-installed, but users can install any operating system they like on the phone – it even boost from a microSD card if you want to try out a different OS than the one installed on the built-in storage.

So far developers have ported postmarketOS, Mobian, Arch, and NixOS to run on the PinePhone Pro. Development is still ongoing, so if you are one of the first folks to get your hands on a PinePhone Pro, expect to treat the software as beta at best.

Like the original PinePhone and other Linux-friendly phones like the Purism Librem 5, the PinePhone Pro is best thought of as a smartphone for enthusiasts of free and open source software and/or privacy. Eventually these phones could present true alternatives to the Android and iOS duopoly in the smartphone space, but right now there are a lot of features that are still under development.

But compared to the original PinePhone, which is still available for $150 and up, the new PinePhone Pro has a faster processor, more memory and storage, better cameras, and improved wireless capabilities. And that could make this phone a little more viable as a daily driver smartphone… assuming there’s software available to let you do what you’d like with the phone. And if the software isn’t there just yet, then you can help test it out, file bug reports, or even join the development.

In addition to announcing that the PinePhone Pro will be available for purchase soon, Pine64 notes that the front-facing camera has been upgraded from a 5MP camera to an 8MP camera with a higher-quality image sensor. And the company has a few updates on accessories for the PinePhone Pro and the original PinePhone:

  • The long-in-development PinePhone Keyboard will be available for purchase soon for $50, probably in early January.
  • A PineDio back case that adds a LoRa radio to the PinePhone will likely be available for purchase later this month.
  • You’ll probably be able to buy a PinePhone/PinePhone Pro back cover with fingerprint reader in the first quarter of 2022.

Polestar 2 owners will be able to purchase more performance via OTA update

ADAS tweaks and charging schedules are among the latest improvements to all cars.

The single-motor version of the Polestar 2 just achieved a 270-mile range rating from the EPA.

Perhaps the most paradigm-shifting element of electric vehicles—other than their owners being able to wake up every morning to a car with a full battery—is the way automakers are improving the cars over time via over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Cynics might point out that the approach is borrowed from the tech industry's practice of releasing a "minimally viable product" and then rolling out new features when they're ready rather than completing everything first and then selling the product. But the practice proved popular enough when Tesla started doing it that it's now expected in the EV market.

Earlier this summer, Polestar bumped the range of its dual-motor Polestar 2s, increasing the EPA rating from 233 miles (375 km) to 249 miles (400 km). The Polestar 2 can now also precondition its battery if you set a charger as a navigation destination, and Sirius XM satellite radio was added via an OTA update.

Most modern laptops have a webcam above the screen, and if you buy a USB webcam for use with a desktop computer, odds are you usually place it atop a monitor.

But that might not always be the best place for a camera, so Dell developed Concept Pari, a wireless webcam that’s easy to reposition. Just pick it up and you can hold the camera in your hands, attach it to a different portion of the display, or stick it on another dock to point in any direction.

Concept Pari is a 1080p webcam that has a built-in mic, battery, and WiFi capabilities. It’s designed to fit into a charging dock that you’ll probably position above your display. But because it’s a wireless camera, you can pick it up and continue using it while pointing the camera at your desk, out the window, or anywhere else if you want other folks on a video call to see something that wouldn’t otherwise be in the frame.

Thanks to magnets, you can also just stick the camera to the middle of your display for improved line-of-sight.

While Dell is positioning Concept Pari as a device for the workplace, I suspect this sort of solution would also come in handy for folks on personal calls who want to point the camera at pets or young kids who might be too squirmy to stay in the picture otherwise.

Dell is calling its wireless webcam a concept for now and the company hasn’t announced any plans to actually bring it to market. But it’s one of several new concepts Dell is showing off this month.

Others include the Concept Luna repairable, sustainable laptop, a Concept Stanza note-taking device with an 11 inch display but no extraneous features like cameras or speakers, and Dell’s new Concept Flow wireless workplace system that users wireless charging and WiFi 6E docking technology to allow you to move your laptop between one workspace and another to immediately connect to mice, displays, keyboards, and networks without plugging anything in.
