Alas, the forged date can’t be removed without damaging the document.
There's rarely time to write about every cool science-y story that comes our way. So this year, we're once again running a special Twelve Days of Christmas series of posts, highlighting one story that fell through the cracks each day, from December 25 through January 5. Today: the results of forensic analysis of Abraham Lincoln's letter pardoning a Civil War soldier confirms the April 14, 1865 date was forged—and it can't be removed without damaging the document.
A document containing President Abraham Lincoln's signed pardon of a Civil War soldier has been the source of much controversy since its 1998 discovery, after historians concluded that the date had likely been altered to make the document more historically significant. A new analysis by scientists at the National Archives has confirmed that the date was indeed forged (although the pardon is genuine), according to a November paper published in the journal Forensic Science International: Synergy. The authors also concluded that there is no way to restore the document to its original state without causing further damage.
Thomas Lowry is a retired psychiatrist turns amateur historian, specializing in military records of the Civil War, and has authored numerous Civil War histories. Back in 1998, he and his wife Beverly were combing through a trove of rarely studied courts martial at the National Archives, carefully indexing the documents. At the time, there were no security cameras in the room, and Archive staffers knew the Lowrys and trusted them. The couple discovered some 570 documents with Lincoln's signature.
‘Wandavision’ is the most-pirated TV show released in 2021. The popular Disney+ series decrowned ‘The Mandalorian’ which topped the chart last year. ‘Loki,’ another Marvel series, is listed in second place and ‘The Witcher’ completes the top three.

At the end of every year, we take a look at the most-downloaded TV episodes among torrenting pirates.
For several years in a row the list was headed by Game of Thrones but that reign came to an end last year after the series ended.
This changing of the guard coincided with the launch of several Disney+ exclusives, which do particularly well among the pirating public. Last year ‘The Mandalorian’ was the most pirated TV series and in 2021 another Disney title tops the list.
‘Wandavision’ seamlessly took over the top spot in a list that is dominated by Marvel series. The series was a hit on Disney+ and on pirate sites, with each episode being downloaded millions of times.
The competition for the top spot was fierce with four titles clearly standing out among the rest. Disney’s “Loki” eventually settled for second place, one spot higher than Netflix’s “The Witcher.”
‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ settled for the fourth spot but wasn’t too far off in popularity compared to the top three.
What stands out most is that all Disney+ series of Marvel’s “Phase Four” are listed in the top 10. In addition to the titles already mentioned, also included is ‘Hawkeye’ in fifth spot and ‘What If…?’ in sixth.
With the current streaming landscape being so fragmented, it appears that many people prefer to pirate instead of paying for ‘another’ subscription. That definitely applies to Marvel fans.
Interestingly, Netflix’s ‘The Squid Game’ wasn’t a big hit among pirates, despite doing very well on the streaming service itself. In fact, Netflix’s ‘La Casa de Papel’ generated more interest among pirates. However, that didn’t make it into the top 10 either.
It’s worth noting that BitTorrent traffic only makes up a small portion of the piracy landscape. Most people use streaming sites and services nowadays, which generally do not report viewing stats.

Find yourself with a new Amazon Fire tablet this holiday season? Amazon’s tablets offer pretty good bang for the buck if you’re looking for a device for reading eBooks, doing some web surfing, or streaming videos. But they also ship with Amazon’s Fire OS, which is a fork of Google Android that includes Amazon’s Appstore rather than Google’s.
And that means that apps, games, or media you’ve purchased from the Google Play Store may not be available out-of-the-box on your Amazon Fire tablet. It also makes it hard to find some apps at all, since they may not be in Amazon’s store. The good news is that since Fire OS is based on Android, it’s possible to install the Google Play Store. You don’t even need to root your tablet. There are a few different ways to do it.
Fire Toolbox is a popular utility that makes it fairly easy to install the Google Play Store, remove some or all of Amazon’s pre-installed apps, and make other changes to Amazon Fire tablets. It’s a free app that you can download and install on a Windows PC. Then just plug your tablet into the computer with a USB cable, follow the instructions to enable developer options on your tablet, and start hacking your tablet.
After years as a Windows-only tool, Fire Toolbox is coming to Linux. The all-in-one toolkit for Amazon Fire tablet hacking makes installing Google Play, changing the launcher, and other hacks easy. The Linux port is still under development though.
If you don’t have a Windows PC or prefer to do things manually, this guide will walk you through the steps of installing Google Play using nothing but your tablet. This guide was written using the latest Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet as an example, but the steps should be similar for most current-gen models including the Amazon Fire 7, Fire HD 8, and Fire HD 10.
This is a fascinating look at the popularity of Amazon’s various media streamers. Fire TV Sticks are way more popular than Cubes or other boxes and the aggressively priced Fire TV Stick 4K is the most popular (for now).
Breath lets you install Ubuntu, Debian, or Arch Linux on most Chromebooks with x86 processors released since 2018. It uses the same forked Linux kernel as Chrome OS, so most hardware should be supported.
XPG Vault is a USB-C gaming mouse with a built-in 1TB SSD with data transfer speeds up to 985MB/S and Gaming Launcher software that lets you load PC games from the mouse. It’s only a concept for now though.

Lots of hurdles to come, but a good start for the new observatory.
Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, MD -- Today, the James Webb Space Telescope started its journey to a location over a million kilometers from Earth, where it will start its science mission in roughly six months. "This is a day for the ages," said Ken Sembach, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute. "Science won't be the same after today."
Sembach said those words roughly an hour before the launch, well before any last minute glitches could have delayed matters, and long before the complicated series of events that would see parts of the observatory unfold from their compact launch configuration. After years of delays, and so much riding on these events, you might expect a greater sense of tension among those gathered here to watch the launch, but the people gathered at the Space Telescope Science Institute seemed remarkably relaxed. At least until you asked them how they were feeling.
And, so far at least, that confidence appears to be well placed. The launch countdown went forward without delay, and each step along the way—separating of solid rocket boosters, release of the fairing—went exactly as planned, and the rocket tracked exactly along the planned trajectory. Video from the rocket's second stage showed the telescope's solar panel deploy, and shortly after controllers here indicated it was fully powered.
