There's rarely time to write about every cool science-y story that comes our way. So this year, we're once again running a special Twelve Days of Christmas series of posts, highlighting one story that fell through the cracks each day, from December 25 through January 5. Today: biodegradable Velcro draws inspiration from nature to give back to nature.

Velcro is an ingenious hook-and-loop fastener inspired by nature—specifically, cockleburs. Now scientists at the Italian Institute of Technology are returning the favor. They have created the first biodegradable Velcro—inspired by climbing plants—and used it to build small devices to help monitor the health of crop plants and deliver pesticides and medicines as needed, according to a November paper published in the journal Communications Materials.

Velcro’s creator was a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral, who combined his love of invention with a passion for the great outdoors. After finishing school, he took a job in the machine shop of a Swiss engineering company. In 1948, de Mestral took a two-week holiday from work to go game bird hunting. While out hiking with his Irish pointer in the Jura Mountains, he was plagued by cockleburs (burdock seeds), which clung relentlessly to both his clothing and his dog’s fur.

Judge Throws Out Triller Lawsuit Against ‘Jake Paul’ Pirate Streaming Site

Triller’s legal campaign against sites that allegedly streamed the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren boxing match last April has suffered another setback. Alleged pirate streaming site Online2LiveStream has been sued twice by the promotor but in common with the first dismissal, a court has thrown the second case out after Triller failed to comply with the court’s orders.

From: TF, for the latest news on copyright battles, piracy and more.

TrillerAfter eight months, Triller’s legal campaign against sites that allegedly streamed the Jake Paul vs Ben Askren boxing match on April 17 is still ongoing.

Named in its initial $100m lawsuit and described as “cyber-criminals”, one of Triller’s early targets were the operators of Online2LiveStreams.us. The platform was accused of diverting a share of 2,000,000 streams away from Triller’s legal services.

The case didn’t go well with all but one of the defendants (FilmDaily.co – a case that is still pending) later dismissed by a judge who found the lawsuit to be overbroad. A month later, Triller responded by filing individual lawsuits against some of the previously-dismissed defendants. Among them was alleged Online2LiveStreams.us operator Robiul Awal and ten doe defendants.

Triller’s lawsuit alleged copyright infringement, vicarious copyright infringement, violations of the Federal Communications Act, conversion, and a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The suit also included a claim of false advertising after Online2LiveStream transformed itself into a scam site, offering events in exchange for credit card details but failing to deliver.

Court Warns Case Could Be Dismissed

On August 30, 2021, three months after the latest case was filed, a California district court ordered Triller to explain why the case should not be dismissed based on the failure of the plaintiff to properly serve the defendant.

“[F]ailure to timely or adequately respond to this Order may result in the dismissal of the action without further warning,” the order read.

Triller informed the court that it had experienced problems serving the defendant as they believe he resides in Bangladesh. As a result, Triller had contacted a third-party vendor to assist and was otherwise “making a good faith effort” to effect service.

On September 17, the court issued a minute order directing Triller to file either a proof of service or a status report by December 17, 2021. That date came and went but Triller remained silent.

Insufficent Due Diligence – Court Dismisses Case

In an order dated December 21, 2021, United States District Judge Otis D. Wright, II explained that despite his instructions, Triller had failed to comply with the requirements of the court.

“As of today’s date, and despite having been granted four months to do so, Plaintiff has not filed a Proof of Service or any other response to the Court’s September 17, 2021 Minute Order. Thus, although the case has been open for over six months, the Court remains without any indication that Plaintiff served Defendant or that Plaintiff has made timely, substantial efforts to serve Defendant,” the order reads.

“Plaintiff was warned that failure to effect service and to respond to the Court’s orders would result in dismissal of the case, and Plaintiff failed to provide the Court with an update regarding service as ordered.”

Noting that the due diligence standard and dismissal factors support dismissal of the case, the Judge did just that.

“Resolution on the merits is not possible due to Plaintiff’s failure to serve Defendant, and the seven-month passage of time without service of process increases the risk of prejudice to Defendant,” Judge Otis Wright notes.

“Under these circumstances, the Court finds that Plaintiff has failed to exercise sufficient due diligence, and dismissal of the action without prejudice is warranted.”

Since the case was dismissed without prejudice, it can be refiled, albeit for a third time. But, given the difficulties serving the defendant the first time around, it seems reasonable to conclude that the job won’t have become any easier with the passing of time and is unlikely to come back from the dead.

The GPD P2 Max 2022 is a 1.4 pound mini-laptop with an 8.9 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel touchscreen display, an Intel Pentium N6000 quad-core processor, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of solid state storage, and a QWERTY keyboard that’s just large enough for touch typing.

First announced at the end of 2021, the little laptop is an update to the original GPD P2 Max, which shipped in 2019 with a choice of Intel Celeron 3965Y or Intel Core m3-8100Y processor options. The new model has the same design, but a newer processor, more storage, and faster wireless capabilities. It’s available from GPD’s AliExpress store for about $820 (although some other sellers are offering it for less).

The new model looks virtually identical to its predecessor, but it’s powered by a 4-core, 4-thread processor based on Intel Jasper Lake architecture and features four times as much storage, support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.

Anyway, the point may be largely moot, since the original GPD P2 Max is no longer available for purchase. If you want to buy a mini-laptop from GPD with a screen that’s larger than 8 inches and which is not designed specifically for gaming, then the P2 Max 2022 is the only game in town.

But if you’re curious to know how the new model stacks up against the 2019 version, here a spec comparison:

One thing to keep in mind is that while the Pentium Silver N6000 is a 4-core, 4-thread chip released in 2021, it’s not necessarily a faster processor than the Core m3-8100Y 2-core, 4-thread chip from 2018 that was used in the previous-gen model. The two chips offer comparable multi-core performance, but the Core m3-8100Y delivers better single-core performance.

Another thing to keep in mind that while GPD posts some promotional images that appear to show someone writing on the GPD P2 Max 2022 display using a digital pen, it’s worth remembering that the company showed the exact same image for the previous-gen model… which did not have an active digitizer to support pressure-sensitive pen input or hovering actions. Instead, the company noted that you could use a capacitive pen… just like you can with pretty much any phone, tablet, or laptop with a modern touchscreen display designed to respond to finger input.

GPD has been selling mini-laptops and handheld computer for the past five years or so. Some models are focused on gaming like the GPD Win line of devices including the GPD Win 2, GPD Win 3, and GPD Win Max. Others are focused on IT work, like the GPD microPC and GPD Pocket 3.

The GPD P2 Max series stands out as more of a general purpose laptop computer that just happens to have a very small screen. The keyboard is large enough for touch-typing, although some keys have been shifted to unusual positions in order to fit on the small case. There’s a webcam (that’s awkwardly placed below the screen instead of above it). And there’s a touchpad below the keyboard instead of a smaller pointing stick or optical touch sensor.

While the P2 Max isn’t a pocket-sized computer like some other GPD devices, the it’s still smaller than most laptops, and at just 1.4 pounds, it won’t weigh down your bag, making it an interesting option for a grab-and-go computer.

The GPD P2 Max is a 1.4 pound mini-laptop with an 8.9 inch display that was released in 2019 with an Intel Core m3-8100Y Amber Lake processor, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of NVMe storage.

Now GPD has announced a new model is on the way with an updated processor, improved wireless and more storage. But the GPD P2 Max 2022 will also have a lower price tag.

In a teaser posted to Twitter and YouTube, GPD outlines a few specs for its next-gen mini-laptop, including:

  • Intel Celeron N6000 processor
  • WiFi 6
  • 1TB SSD

While the teaser image appears to show someone writing on the GPD P2 Max 2022 display using a digital pen, it’s worth remembering that the company showed the exact same image for the previous-gen model… which did not have an active digitizer to support pressure-sensitive pen input or hovering actions. Instead, the company noted that you could use a capacitive pen… just like you can with pretty much any phone, tablet, or laptop with a modern touchscreen display designed to respond to finger input.

The GPD P2 Max series stands out as more of a general purpose laptop computer that just happens to have a very small screen. There’s a webcam (that’s awkwardly placed below the screen instead of above it). And there’s a touchpad below the keyboard instead of a smaller pointing stick or optical touch sensor.

While the P2 Max isn’t a pocket-sized computer like some other GPD devices, the first-gen model is still smaller than most laptops at 8.4″ x 5.9″ x 0.6″ and 1.4 pounds, allowing it to take up a lot less space in your bag. It’s unclear whether this year’s model will be exactly the same size, but the fact that GPD seems to be reusing an old promotional image suggests that most changes in the 2022 model will be under-the-hood.

That includes upgrading the WiFi and storage and swapping out Intel’s 5-watt Core m3-8100Y Amber Lake processor for a 6-watt Intel Celeron N6000 Jasper Lake chip.

While that means Intel is replacing a “Core” series chip with one based on “Atom” architecture, the new processor is a significantly newer chip manufactured with a 10nm process. It’s also a 4-core, 4-thread chip rather than a 2-core, 2-thread processor. And benchmarks suggest that multi-core performance is pretty similar (although the older Amber Lake chip comes out ahead in single-core tests).

But since the Celeron N6000 is a Jasper Lake chip designed for low-cost, low-power laptops, tablets, and mini-desktops, it should allow GPD to bring down the price of its new model, which will be a welcome change at a time when prices for mini-laptops and handhelds have been trending upward.

GPD says the P2 Max 2022 will be available from the company’s AliExpress shop soon, which will mark one of the first times that the company has launched a new product for global markets without running a crowdfunding campaign first.

Lenovo has been dabbling in the dual-screen laptop space for the past few years with the ThinkBook Plus line of devices. While previous models had E Ink displays on the screen that allowed you to closed the laptop’s lid and use it as an eReader or note-taking device, Lenovo’s next-gen ThinkBook Plus is something different.

It’s a notebook with a 17 inch widescreen display and a built-in graphics tablet to the right of the keyboard. Evan Blas shared a leaked picture of the upcoming dual-screen laptop a few months ago, and now he’s back with four new high-rest images that gives us a better idea of what to expect.

As expected, the most distinctive feature of the new ThinkBook Plus is the secondary display placed to the right of the keyboard. It’s a touchscreen display with support for digital pen input, allowing users to write or draw on the screen.

Images suggest that you’ll be able to use that second screen in at least a few different ways. It could be used as an app launcher, for example, allowing you to open applications without opening the Windows Start menu. It could also be used to show a second or third full-screen app when you’ve got other apps running on the primary display. And you can use it as a graphics tablet for creating or editing artwork.

While we don’t have detailed specs for the upcoming ThinkBook Plus yet, pictures show what appear to be an HDMI port and at least two USB-A and two USB-C ports. The hinge looks like it will allow the lid to open to at least a 180 degree angle. And the pen sure looks like it’s designed to fit into a garage in the notebook’s chassis when it’s not in use, although I’m not sure if we can see the hole where it would go.

The power button above the keyboard looks like it could also house a fingerprint sensor, and there’s a webcam above the display that appears to have a privacy shutter that can cover the camera when it’s not in use.

I’m not sure how comfortable it will be to type on a keyboard with all of the keys shifted toward the left side of the laptop. But the new ThinkBook Plus looks like a niche device that’s aimed at folks who expect to use the second screen/graphics tablet regularly, which could make the left-leaning keyboard an acceptable trade-off.

We’ll likely learn more about the new ThinkBook Plus when the Consumer Electronics Show begins next week. While Lenovo is one of a growing number of tech companies that’s announced it won’t be participating in the show in-person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company still plans to announce new products starting January 4, 2021.

Evan Blass has also posted some leaked images of Lenovo’s next-gen ThinkPad Z-series laptops, reviving a line that the company had used in the past for thin and light widescreen laptops with optional support for cellular data, among other things.
