ESA head says Europe needs to stop facilitating Elon Musk’s ambitions in space

Musk’s thousands of satellites risk crowding others out of low-Earth orbits.

The head of the European Space Agency has urged the continent’s leaders to stop facilitating Elon Musk’s ambition to dominate the new space economy, warning that the lack of co-ordinated action meant the US billionaire was “making the rules” himself.

Josef Aschbacher, the new director-general of ESA, said that Europe’s readiness to help the rapid expansion of Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service risked hindering the region’s own companies from realising the potential of commercial space.

“Space will be much more restrictive [in terms of] frequencies and orbital slots,” he said in an interview with the Financial Times. “The governments of Europe collectively should have an interest to... give European providers equal opportunities to play on a fair market.”

Sony drops first look teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)

The writers had so much story to tell, they split the sequel into two installments.

Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld reprise their roles as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, respectively, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), a two-part sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Sony Pictures unveiled a first-look teaser trailer for its upcoming animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) at the Comic-Con Experience in Brazil this weekend. Yep, it's going to be a two-part sequel to 2018's critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning blockbuster, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

(Some spoilers for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse below.)

The 2018 film was a mega-hit, grossing over $375 million worldwide against a $90 million budget, and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature—a well-deserved honor. As Ars Technica's Sam Machkovech wrote in his review, "It's easily the best comic-nerd film in years to warmly embrace the kinds of viewers who know their comics canon front and back, all without intimidating the inevitable kid and newbie viewers attracted to this incredibly family-friendly adventure."

Google Features YTS and 123movies as “Best Movie Websites”

Google’s algorithms have made life a lot more convenient for many people, but they sometimes lead to peculiar results. When searching for the best movie websites, the search engine features pirate sites including YTS and 123movies in related searches. These and other not-so-legal sites also appear in one of Google’s “best movie website” lists.

To help hundreds of millions of people find what they search for, Google has implemented some nifty features over the years.

In addition to providing a list of web results, Google often shows related questions and popular topics, which should make it easier to discover new content.

These features are based on algorithms that are not always aware of the intricate nuances of today’s web. This is particularly true when it comes to online media and entertainment.

Over the years Google has been regularly criticized for indirectly making it easier for people to find pirated content. This message hasn’t gone unnoticed by the company, which has implemented a wide variety of anti-piracy optimizations. It even went as far as voluntarily removing The Pirate Bay from search results in the Netherlands.

Pirate Recommendations?

Despite Google’s best efforts, its algorithms can sometimes get out of line. When we search for the term “free movie website” for example, the related search section featured the “best movie website” search, prominently featuring several pirate sites.

best movie website

As shown above, these best movie sites include the pirate streaming sites 123movies and Fmovies, as well as torrent site YTS.

These results may differ per device but we tested it in a relatively unused browser without being logged in to any Google account, so this appears to be a rather general ‘recommendation’.

The Algorithms Work

It’s easy to blame Google’s algorithms but they simply do their job. The web is littered with sites that provide overviews of the best free movie sites and many of these list pirate sites as well.

Similarly, it seems plausible that many people who search for these terms are looking for pirated content, which is a signal for the algorithms that YTS, 123movies, and Fmovies are relevant results. And that’s true.

The only problem is that these sites are not exactly legal. Therefore, we expect these recommendations to disappear in the near future. The same happened after we pointed out that Google prominently featured the “best torrent sites.”

There’s More…

To conclude, we should mention that the “best movie websites” listing is not the only place where pirate sites and apps are featured.

When we go further down the rabbit hole we also see reels for “free movie websites,” “free movie apps“, “best free movie download websites“, “websites to watch,” and several other related queries.

Ironically, even when we search for “legal movie streaming sites” pirated alternatives are suggested through related searches.

The movement to hold AI accountable gains more steam

First-in-US NYC law requires algorithms used in hiring to be “audited” for bias.

Algorithms play a growing role in our lives, even as their flaws are becoming more apparent: a Michigan man wrongly accused of fraud had to file for bankruptcy; automated screening tools disproportionately harm people of color who want to buy a home or rent an apartment; Black Facebook users were subjected to more abuse than white users. Other automated systems have improperly rated teachers, graded students, and flagged people with dark skin more often for cheating on tests.

Now, efforts are underway to better understand how AI works and hold users accountable. New York’s City Council last month adopted a law requiring audits of algorithms used by employers in hiring or promotion. The law, the first of its kind in the nation, requires employers to bring in outsiders to assess whether an algorithm exhibits bias based on sex, race, or ethnicity. Employers also must tell job applicants who live in New York when artificial intelligence plays a role in deciding who gets hired or promoted.

In Washington, DC, members of Congress are drafting a bill that would require businesses to evaluate automated decision-making systems used in areas such as health care, housing, employment, or education, and report the findings to the Federal Trade Commission; three of the FTC’s five members support stronger regulation of algorithms. An AI Bill of Rights proposed last month by the White House calls for disclosing when AI makes decisions that impact a person’s civil rights, and it says AI systems should be “carefully audited” for accuracy and bias, among other things.
