Review: Halo Infinite’s campaign finishes the fight—but arrives in tatters

Great balance between classic and new ideas marred by serious technical issues.

Halo Infinite is the best campaign-driven entry since 343 Industries took over the series in 2011. It is also the messiest Halo game yet.

To be clear, I enjoyed my time with Halo Infinite's campaign. That's primarily because the game sees 343 finally nail its own Halo "voice," one whose mechanics, gunplay, and physics feel more rooted in the series' past than ever before. Meanwhile, 343 uses clever ideas to modernize and go beyond the foundation established by Bungie. And the game delivers story, dialogue, and sci-fi stakes where they count.

But there's no way to review this title without complaining about the game's launch state. Halo Infinite may reach new series heights, but its ambition tests the limits of the duct tape keeping the game together.

Before we begin, three housekeeping notes

First, this is a campaign-exclusive review. Xbox Game Studios has wisely split Halo Infinite into two discrete parts, and the online versus-multiplayer suite has been live as a free-to-play game since November 20. It's quite fun, and I'll have more to say about it in the near future. For this article's purposes, "Infinite" refers to the campaign launching on Steam, Windows 10, and Xbox consoles on Wednesday, December 8, not the versus modes.

LG shut down its smartphone division earlier this year, but promised to continue providing Android updates for its latest flagship phones through 2022.

Want to keep using up to date software on an LG phone after that? Your best bet may be unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom ROM. But you’d better hurry up, because LG has announced it will no longer offer its bootloader unlocking tools after December 31, 2021.

LG Velvet

In a notice on LG’s developer website, the company notes that it’s pulling the plug on its LG Mobile Developer website services at the end of the year, which is fast approaching.

Currently if you want to unlock a supported Android device from LG, you can request a unique unlock key for your device (although the whole process involves jumping through a bunch of hoops and will void your warranty, so it’s probably best left for advanced users only).

Starting in January, the services that generates those keys will no longer be available. It is still possible that hackers may find a workaround – there’s a long, proud history of unofficial bootloader unlocking utilities for phones where no official method is offered. But there are no guarantees. You may want to keep an eye on the LG pages at the xda-developers forum for custom ROMs and other hacks for LG devices moving forward.

Quantum processor swapped in for a neural network

Quantum processor used to model weather based on sparse data.

It's become increasingly clear that quantum computers won't have a single moment when they become clearly superior to classical hardware. Instead, we're likely to see them becoming useful for a narrow set of problems and then gradually expand out from there to an increasing range of computations. The question obviously becomes one of where the utility will be seen first.

The quantum-computing startup Rigetti now has a white paper that identifies, at least theoretically, a case when quantum hardware should offer an advantage. And it is actually useful: replacing a neural network that's used for analyzing weather data.

How’s the weather?

The problem the people at Rigetti looked at involves taking a partial set of weather data and inferring what the rest looks like. Plenty of areas of the planet lack good coverage, and so we only get partial information about local conditions. And, if we have things like commercial aircraft going through said remote areas, we'll often want a more complete picture of the conditions there.
