The HP Pavilion Aero 13 is a thin and light laptop that punches above its price class in terms of design and performance, and that’s when you’re looking at the list price of $750 and up.

Right now HP is selling this 2.2 pound notebook for just $540 and up. That price gets you a model with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, but it doesn’t cost that much more to upgrade to better specs.

For example, a model with a Ryzen 7 5800U processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage runs $710 during this sale. Just note that if you want a backlit keyboard you have to pay an extra $20. You can also upgrade from a full HD display to a 2560 x 1600 pixel screen for another $30.

Here are some of the day’s best deals.

Apple patent fights lookie-loos with glasses-activated screen blur

Tech would use face scan to see if user is wearing privacy glasses.

Apple is giving new meaning to the phrase "for your eyes only." A patent filed by Apple and published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office details the tech giant's interest in creating "privacy eyewear" that blurs content on a device's screen unless someone wearing special glasses is using it.

As spotted by Patently Apple, the patent, which focuses on creating different FaceID profiles for various visual impairments, explores a new type of privacy screen. The patent doesn't specify any Apple product by name. Instead, it refers to electronic devices in general, including smartphones, watches, laptops, TVs, and car displays. Drawings in the patent show the feature working on a smartphone-like device.

The technology would use a face scan to determine if the user is wearing the required glasses. It could recognize the headgear by a specific graphic, such as a QR or bar code.

Rockstar servers down for nearly a day amid remastered GTA Trilogy launch

PC games removed from sale as outage locks out access to some players’ purchases.

The servers for the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC have been down for nearly 24 hours now, and PC versions of Rockstar's games have been removed from sale on the company's website. The timing of the outage is particularly tough for the company, coming amid Thursday's launch of the remastered Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy.

Rockstar officially noted the outage in a support tweet Thursday afternoon, merely saying that "services for the Rockstar Games Launcher and supported titles are temporarily offline for maintenance. Services will return as soon as maintenance is completed." Fourteen hours later, the company gave a brief update, saying, "We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work on restoring services for the Rockstar Games Launcher and supported titles." That same update also appears on Rockstar's support site.

PC Gamer reports that the launcher is loading in offline mode for players who have previously launched specific games on the service. Multiplayer titles like Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Redemption Online remain inaccessible on PC for the time being, however. And for those launching recently downloaded titles like the GTA Definitive Trilogy for the first time, a required online authentication check will fail during the outage.

We suggest you don’t buy the $60 Grand Theft Auto Definitive Trilogy

Without cheaper à la carte options, $60 bundle is currently hard to recommend.

The PlayStation 2-era Grand Theft Auto trilogy is now available on modern gaming devices and comes with across-the-board aesthetic touch-ups. That should be good news. The series' shift from top-down 2D to open-world 3D was a seismic event in the gaming industry, and despite showing their age, each of these games provides a fine amount of macabre criminal adventuring.

But while some parts of the trilogy's re-release are easy to praise, others are less exciting. Shortly after the $60 GTA Definitive Trilogy went live on Thursday, I logged some time with the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X versions. I also spent a few hours staring at the game's locked-up installation on my Windows 10 testing rig. I can now see why Rockstar wasn't eager to make this collection available to the press ahead of launch—and also why the game maker didn't want to break up this set into three $20 purchases. As Ryder might say in GTA San Andreas: This re-release is a buster. (And that's not a good thing.)

That’s one way to encourage grand theft, Rockstar

The worst part of the release is the collection's Windows 10 version, which is now exclusively available on the Rockstar Games Launcher. Ahead of this week's launch, Rockstar removed the old versions of GTA IIIVice City, and San Andreas from storefronts like Steam. You can still access these versions—along with years of community-driven mod support—if you've already purchased them, but they are no longer for sale.

Samsung is pulling the plug on DeX for Mac and Windows 7

Samsung’s DeX software lets you use supported phones or tablets as if they were desktop computers thanks by connecting a mouse, keyboard, and display. A few years ago the company also rolled out Windows and Mac apps that also let you just plug your phone into a computer to get the DeX experience.

Now the company has announced that it’s pulling the plug on DeX for macOS and Windows 7 in January, which means starting in 2022 you’ll only be able to use the software with Windows 8 or later.

The idea behind DeX is that the apps you run on a phone or tablet can also be useful on a big screen with keyboard and mouse input… but you might want a more desktop-like experience for that.

So when you connect an external display or use the DeX Mac or Windows apps you get a support for viewing multiple apps at once in resizable windows, app launcher keys on the bottom right side of the screen and status indicators and notifications on the bottom right.

Users can also use DeX for a multi-screen experience, with different apps visible on the phone and the connected PC or display. For example, you could watch videos on one device while viewing a chat app on the other, or use your PC or external display for presentations while taking a call on your phone.

Samsung hasn’t said why it’s ending DeX support for macOS and Windows 7, but it’s probably a safe bet that supporting an aging version of Windows with diminishing market share doesn’t make a lot of sense for the company.

As for the Mac version? Perhaps it never had as much of a user base in the first place, although that’s just speculation – there are certainly some Mac users with Android phones rather than iPhones, it’s just not clear that there’s enough of them using DeX for Samsung to bother maintaining its app.

DeX for Windows

The company has started showing a pop-up message to DeX for Mac users alerting them that support will officially end in January, 2022. Users who have already install the Mac app will be able to continue using it, but Samsung will no longer offer updates or customer support. And if you remove the app you may not be able to easily install it again in the future, as Samsung will no longer make Dex for Mac available for download.
