Power-saving and software compatibility feature in wide-ranging presentation.
Valve's full, hours-long, developer-focused presentation.
Valve's portable Steam Deck hardware may be delayed by a couple of months, but that didn't stop Valve from discussing plenty of interesting details about the system during a wide-ranging developer-focused livestream Friday. That included a lot of nitty-gritty talk about hardware specs and software interpolation, but also design decisions surrounding how to balance hardware-power and battery-power concerns.
AMD's custom-built Steam Deck APU, dubbed Aerith after the Final Fantasy VII character, is the core of the system and was a focus of the presentation. AMD says the system is the company's first mobile chip to feature an RDNA2 GPU architecture, so it should have full support for DirectX 12 and the latest Vulkan APIs. That also means that not only will Steam Deck be compatible with the entire Steam library, but many Steam games will already be optimized for the specific chip configuration found inside, Valve says.
The CPU portion of the Aerith chip features four Zen 2 cores capable of running eight threads at 3.5 Ghz. Meanwhile, the GPU features eight RDNA2 compute units running at 1.6 Ghz.

The mayor of a small city in Maryland today was arrested and charged with 50 counts of distributing revenge porn on Reddit, the Maryland state prosecutor's office announced.
Cambridge Mayor Andrew Bradshaw, 32, "created multiple accounts on the public Internet forum 'Reddit,' employing public usernames consisting of permutations of the name and birthdate of a person, identified as Victim-1, who had a past romantic relationship with Mr. Bradshaw," the announcement said. Bradshaw allegedly "posted nude photographs of Victim-1, captioned with racial slurs and sexually explicit language, on those 'Reddit' accounts and various 'Subreddit' forums that were related to sexual activity, humiliation, degradation, race, and other topics."
Each of the 50 counts carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a fine of $5,000. Police had executed a search and seizure warrant at the mayor's office in City Hall on August 4.

Fifty years ago today, Intel released the first commercial single-chip microprocessor. Today’s chips are more than a little faster, but you’ve got to start somewhere.
In other recent tech news from around the web, MSI gives us a first look at a previously unannounced mini PC, Samsung is starting to roll out Android 12 to Galaxy phones, Amazon has announced some of its upcoming Black Friday device deals, and Google may have scrapped plans to launch a Pixel Fold smartphone with a foldable display (but to be fair, the company never actually said it was going to release one in the first place… there have just been a lot of rumors, leaks, and speculation.
Intel is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Intel 4004, the first commercially produced microprocessor. It was a 4-bit, single-core chip with a top frequency of 750 kHz and support for up to 4KB of memory, but it paved the way for things to come.
It looks like MSI plans to launch a small form-factor computer designed for “home audio/video” use next year. The company won a CES 2022 innovation award for previously unannounced products including the MSI Modern DM10 mini PC.
Samsung begins rolling out One UI 4 (based on Android 12) to its Galaxy S21 series phones. While incorporating Google’s Material You and new Privacy features, this update looks more subtle than what Pixel users got. Coming to more devices soon.
Have an Android phone and an Android TV media streamer? Now you can browser for smart TV apps on your phone, and choose to install them on your smart TV using a new drop-down option in the Play Store.
Liliputing’s Black Friday 2021 Mobile Tech Deals page has been updated with some news from Amazon: expect up to 50% off select Fire HD tablets, up to 30% off the Kindle Oasis, $20 off the Luna Controller, and more.
According to “supply chain sources,” Google may have scrapped plans to launch the long-rumored Pixel Fold in 2021 or the first half of 2022 since it wouldn’t be competitive with Samsung’s foldables in the US and Europe.
According to Mishaal Rahman, who shared this link, even if the report is true and Google does decide not to launch its own foldable phone, the company still plans to release Android 12L soon, an updated version of its mobile operating system that’s optimized for foldables and tablets with larger-than-phone-sized displays.

“This test will significantly increase the risk to astronauts and cosmonauts.”
The space station is being threatened by an unexpected cloud of debris. (credit: NASA)
The seven astronauts and cosmonauts onboard the International Space Station sheltered inside their respective spacecraft, a Crew Dragon and Soyuz, on Monday morning as the orbiting laboratory passed through an unexpected debris field.
This was not a pre-planned collision avoidance maneuver in low Earth orbit, in which the station would use onboard propulsion to move away. Rather, the situation required the astronauts to quickly take shelter.
Had there been a collision during the conjunction, the two spacecraft would have been able to detach from the space station and make an emergency return to Earth. Ultimately that was not necessary, and the astronauts reemerged into the space station later Monday. However, as the crew on board the station prepared for their sleep schedule, Mission Control in Houston asked them to keep as many of the hatches onboard the space station closed for the time being, in case of an unexpected collision during subsequent orbits.
Drivers are contractors, but lawsuit says Amazon is ultimately liable.

Amazon is currently defending itself against a lawsuit that could determine whether it is liable for the actions of its contract delivery drivers.
In March, Ans Rana was going to see his sister’s new house with his father and brother, who was driving a Tesla Model S, when they came upon a disabled vehicle on Interstate 75 outside Atlanta. Rana’s brother slowed to a near stop, but the Amazon delivery van behind them apparently didn’t notice. The driver of the van was going nearly 14 miles per hour over the speed limit, Rana’s lawyers allege in a lawsuit. The van slammed into the rear of the Tesla with such force that it pushed the car into the left lanes of the interstate where it was struck by a Toyota Corolla before hitting the median barrier.
Rana suffered life-threatening injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, and had to be placed on a ventilator. His spinal cord was also damaged, and he hasn’t been able to regain the use of his legs or arms despite months of therapy and rehabilitation.

Pine64 has been working on an official keyboard accessory for the PinePhone for most of the year. It’s gone through multiple hardware revisions in that time, but it’s finally almost ready to ship and you’ll be able to order for $50 starting next month. For that price, you can effectively turn Pine64’s Linux-friendly smartphone into a pocket-sized Linux laptop.
In other recent Linux Smartphone tech news, a hacker figured out how to speed up the eMMC storage on PinePhones. There are now instructions for doing the same thing yourself… just keep in mind that it involves hacking the hardware as well as software, so there’s some risk. Meanwhile the Sxmo user interface for mobile Linux devices is now available with Wayland, and more phones and tablets will likely be able to run operating systems with mainline (or near mainline) Linux kernels soon.
The PinePhone Keyboard will be available in December for $50, allowing you to use Pine64’s Linux phones like tiny Linux laptops. The final design includes improved keycap labels, responsiveness and a fix to prevent electrical damage.
The PinePhone ships with an eMMC storage module that should theoretically be capable of data transfer speeds as high as 125 MB/s, but due to the power supply voltage it’s limited to about 55MB/s for most PinePhone models that have shipped (or 80MB/s for the PinePhone Braveheart edition that went out to early adopters).
But it turns out you can modify a PinePhone to speed up the storage. Unfortunately it cannot be done with software alone, and requires de-soldering and re-soldering components, so proceed with caution if following these instructions.
This post from developer Federico Amedeo Izzo spells out more details about the Vccq mod, including how this method was discovered and tested. One thing to keep in mind is that if you do perform this modification, you will only be able to run operating systems from the eMMC storage if they have the proper Device Tree settings, so you’ll also need to either run an OS with the proper Device Tree Overlay applied, or add it to the OS of your choice.
And here’s a short demo video showing a PinePhone after the eMMC speed modification had been applied.

The upcoming PinePhone Pro will have even faster storage, plus a significantly faster processor and a number of other upgrades. While Lukasz Erecinski is employed by Pine64, he’s also one of the first people to get their hands on a developer prototype and has shared some initial impressions about speed, performance, heat dissipation, and more.
This simple, lightweight user interface for mobile Linux distributions has a higher learning curve than Phosh, Plasma Mobile, or Lomiri, but it’s also one of the fastest, especially on low-end devices like the PinePhone.
Up until recently Sxmo has used the dwm window manager and Xorg display server. That’s still an option in version 1.6.0, but Sway is the new default window manager, and it’s running on Wayland. The Sxmo team says this brings improved performance to the virtual keyboard, Megapixels camera app, and video playback in the Firefox web browser. There’s also now support for Waydroid, which allows you to run Android apps on Linux devices.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, released in 2019, has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor and LPDDR4 RAM. It will soon be able to run mobile Linux distributions with a mainline (or near mainline) Linux 5.15 kernel.
Linux 5.16, meanwhile, should bring support for the newer Snapdragon 690 mid-range processor, opening the door to running Linux on more phones and tablets that are currently shipping with Android.
