Shuttle’s latest small form-factor, fanless computers are powered by low-power Intel Jasper Lake processors and they’re designed to be low-maintenance machines that can run 24/7 while generating little to no noise.

The Shuttle XPC Slim DL20N is expected to sell for around 231 Euros and up, while the Shuttle XPC DL20N6 with a higher-performance processor starts at 281 Euros.

Those starting prices are for models with Intel Celeron N4505 dual-core or Intel Pentium Silver N6005 quad-core processors, respectively. Both of those are 10-watt processors based on Intel’s 10nm “Jasper Lake” architecture, with 11th-gen Intel UHD graphics.

Customers will either need to pay extra for models with memory, storage, and an operating system or provide your own.

The Shuttle XPC Slim DL20N series computers support up to 16GB of DDR4-2933 memory thanks to two 260-pin SODIMM slots, and both have an M.2 2280 slot for PCIe x2 NVMe or SATA storage as well as a 2.5″ bay for a hard drive or SSD.

On the outside you’ll find a selection of ports including:

  • 1 x HDMI 2.0b
  • 1 x DisplayPort 1.4a
  • 1 x VGA
  • 1 x Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2
  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1
  • 2 x USB 2.0
  • 1 x 3.5mm mic input
  • 1 x 3.5mm line out
  • 1 x SD card reader
  • 1 x RS232 COM port
  • 1 x RS232/RS422/RS485 COM port

The Shuttle Slim DL20N computers are compact systems that measure about 7.5″ x 6.5″ x 1.7″ and which have a starting weight around 1.8 pounds. You can mount the computers to a wall or the back of a display using an included VESA mount kit. And the external 40W/19V power adapter looks more like a laptop charging cable than a desktop power supply, so it doesn’t take up a lot of space either.

Shuttle positions the Slim DL20N computers as solutions for digital signage, kiosk, or other commercial applications, since they’re designed to be low-maintenance machines. The company notes that they can be configured to start up remotely, and there’s also optional support for a 4G LTE module which can be used as backup internet access or as a primary connection, depending on the application.

Netflix will begin regularly reporting viewership numbers for its top programs and films, a major shift in strategy for the streaming company that has carefully guarded its data over the past decade.

The company said it will report every week how many hours people spent watching its top 10 TV shows and movies, for both English and non-English titles, including Netflix originals and content licensed from third parties.

In its first release of viewer numbers on Tuesday, Netflix said its subscribers last week spent 149 million hours watching Red Notice, the action film starring Gal Gadot, making it the most popular piece of English-language content on the platform.

After bombshell report, Activision employees walk out, demand CEO resign

WSJ report offers disturbing allegations of Kotick’s treatment of harassment complaints.

A group of Activision Blizzard employees staged a walkout and demanded the resignation of CEO Bobby Kotick Tuesday, in response to a bombshell Wall Street Journal report alleging Kotick failed to act decisively or inform his board of directors of widespread abuse allegations within the company.

The WSJ story is the result of months of reporting and says that Activision has received more than 500 claims of "harassment, sexual assault, bullying, pay disparities, and other issues" just in the few months since the state of California brought a lawsuit against the company over such problems. Many of those reports stem from heavy drinking at company-sponsored events, according to the Journal, including the alleged rape of one employee at the hands of Sledgehammer Games supervisor Javier Panameno (who was later fired after an internal investigation, and who has now resigned from his subsequent employer Zynga). This follows on broadly similar reports of drunken misconduct stemming from a booze-filled "Cosby suite" at BlizzCon 2013.

The Journal report also adds new context to the sudden departure of former Blizzard co-chief Jennifer Oneal, who announced she was leaving the company earlier this month, just three months after being promoted to help fill the role of former President J. Allen Brack. Oneal reportedly complained to a company lawyer of previous sexual harassment she suffered at the company, pay disparities with her Blizzard co-chief Mike Ybarra, and a lack of faith that the company's executive leadership could change its culture. "I have been tokenized, marginalized, and discriminated against," Oneal reportedly wrote.

IBM clears the 100-qubit mark with its new processor

Company says it’s on track for 1,000+ qubits, useful computations in 2023.

IBM has announced it has cleared a major hurdle in its effort to make quantum computing useful: it now has a quantum processor, called Eagle, with 127 functional qubits. This makes it the first company to clear the 100-qubit mark, a milestone that's interesting because the interactions of that many qubits can't be simulated using today's classical computing hardware and algorithms.

But what may be more significant is that IBM now has a roadmap that would see it producing the first 1,000-qubit processor in two years. And, according to IBM Director of Research Darío Gil, that's the point where calculations done with quantum hardware will start being useful.

What’s new

Gil told Ars that the new qubit count was a product of multiple developments that have been put together for the first time. One is that IBM switched to what it's calling a "heavy hex" qubit layout, which it announced earlier this year. This layout connects qubits in a set of hexagons with shared sides. In this layout, qubits are connected to two, three, or a maximum of four neighbors—on average, that's a lower level of connectivity than some competing designs. But Gil argued that the tradeoff is worth it, saying "it reduces the level of connectivity, but greatly improves crosstalk."

When Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 7+ for Business earlier this year, it was designed strictly for business customers. Powered by an 11th-gen Intel Tiger Lake processor, the tablet was a bit more powerful than other Surface Pro 7 models, which had 10th-gen chips. It was also the first Surface tablet with a replaceable SSD.

Unfortunately, as the name suggested, the Surface Pro 7+ for Business was only sold through business channels… until now. Best Buy has recently begun selling a non-business version of the Surface Pro 7+. And while they’re similar in a lot of ways to the newer Microsoft Surface Pro 8, the Surface Pro 7+ is currently a little cheaper.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7+

Best Buy is offering two Surface Pro 7+ configurations:

Both of those configurations come with a Black Type Cover keyboard, something which normally costs extra. And both versions of the tablet feature a 12.3 inch, 2736 x 1824 pixel 60 Hz display, Windows 11 Home software, support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, and 5MP front and 8MP rear cameras plus 1.6 watt stereo speakers.

By comparison, prices for the Surface Pro 8 start at $1100 for a model with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage – and you’ll have to pay extra for a Type Cover if you want a keyboard case (those tend to sell for around $100 to $280).

Microsoft Surface Pro 8

The Surface Pro 8 also features 11th-gen Intel chips and an access slot that allows you to remove and replace the SSD. But on top of that, the newer tablets have slightly larger, higher-resolution 13 inch, 2880 x 1920 pixel displays with a 120 Hz refresh rate, upgraded cameras and speakers (there’s a 10MP rear camera with 4K video recording support and 2MP stereo speakers), support for Bluetooth 5.1, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports.

So you do get a bit more if you pay extra for the Surface Pro 8. But after existing only as a business solution for most of the year, I suppose it’s nice to at least have the option of saving a few bucks by picking up the Surface Pro 7+ instead.

Amazon’s new Prime Video app for Mac enables local downloads on desktop

Until now, downloading Prime Video shows and films was only possible on mobile.

Amazon has released a Prime Video app that runs natively on the Mac. The app offers many of the same features as the mobile app but is available in the Mac App Store.

The app is free to download but requires an Amazon account to access content. That content includes both shows and movies that stream free with Amazon Prime Video, as well as purchases and rentals from Amazon's entire catalog. In fact, there's a prominently placed toggle button labeled "Free to me" in the top-right corner of the app. Checking this means that you'll just see content that is free with Prime.

The app is broken up into home, store, find, downloads, and my stuff tabs.

Sorry PlayStation owners, Elder Scrolls VI will be an Xbox/PC exclusive

Announcement puts the final nail in the coffin for Bethesda’s multiplatform history.

Since Microsoft purchased Bethesda Softworks (via parent company ZeniMax Media) last September, the question of Bethesda games on non-Xbox consoles has been on everyone's minds. This week, Microsoft put probably the final nail in that conversational coffin, with Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirming in an interview with British GQ magazine that the upcoming Elder Scrolls VI will be available only on Xbox consoles and the PC.

In a quote that doesn't seem likely to soothe many PlayStation owners, Spencer said the exclusivity is "not about punishing any other platform, like I fundamentally believe all of the platforms can continue to grow." Instead, Spencer was focused on "be[ing] able to bring the full complete package of what we have" with the company's games, meaning integration with Xbox Live, Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, etc. "And that would be true when I think about Elder Scrolls VI," he added. "That would be true when I think about any of our franchises."

An announcement 14 months in the making

The confirmation ends over a year of coyness and mealymouthed statements about the exclusivity of major Bethesda games. The ordeal started with a Bloomberg interview last September in which Spencer said future Bethesda titles would be considered for non-Xbox consoles "on a case-by-case basis." An in November, Xbox CFO Tim Stuart was saying publicly that Microsoft wanted Bethesda content to be "first or better or best" on Xbox rather than necessarily exclusive to the platform.

DISH Wins $31m Judgment & Injunction Against Pirate IPTV Service & Resellers

In March, pirate IPTV provider ChitramTV was hit with a large copyright infringement lawsuit by DISH Network. This week a Texas court handed down a $31m judgment and a broad injunction that requires ChitramTV and resellers to cease-and-desist, third-party server companies to terminate services, and registries and registrars to disable domains. Even then, the case is still not quite over.

From: TF, for the latest news on copyright battles, piracy and more.

IPTVAs reported by TF back in March, DISH Network filed a huge lawsuit against pirate IPTV provider ChitramTV.

The complaint also named Dinesh Vigneswaran, the alleged owner of ChitramTV Canada, who allegedly does business from the Chitram.ca website. DISH claimed that ChitramTV obtained its broadcasts and streams, transferred them to its own servers, and then rebroadcasted them to subscribers of the Chitram service.

ChitramTV was accused of distributing, selling and promoting ‘Chitram’ set-top boxes and subscription packages containing more than 500 live TV channels and 10,000 movies, both directly to users and through a network of resellers, including Vigneswaran.

In an effort to shut the service down, DISH said it sent at least 134 copyright infringement notices to Chitram between July 2014 and November 2015. In December 2015, Chitram reportedly “temporarily ceased” transmitting DISH content but by December 2017, it was back online.

All direct complaints were ignored so DISH sent copyright notices to the service’s CDN providers too but according to the broadcaster, Chitram simply moved its business elsewhere.

Demands for Massive Statutory Damages

In its complaint, DISH demanded $150,000 in statutory damages for more than 200 registered works – around $31 million in total damages. The broadcaster also sought to take over the service’s domains as part of a broad injunction. The case would not be straightforward, however.

While DISH had managed to identify Dinesh Vigneswaran from the beginning, finding out the identities and physical locations of those actually behind the main ChitramTV service (Does 1-10) proved impossible. Ultimately, the court allowed DISH to serve a summons to the names ChitramTV and Chitram.tv via two email addresses, one linked to a Chitram domain and another registered to Google. DISH later filed motions for default judgment against Vigneswaran and Does 1-10.

DISH Wins $31m Judgment

This week District Judge Lynn N. Hughes handed down a default judgment in the case noting that after being served on August 20, 2021, the unknown individuals behind ChitramTV had not answered or otherwise appeared.

“DISH Network, L.L.C., will take $31,050,000 from ChitramTV, plus 0.15% post-judgment interest. This reflects the statutory damages of $150,000 for ChitramTV’s willful infringement of 207 of DISH’s registered copyrighted works,” the Judge wrote.

While the $31m win makes for good headlines, the question of whether DISH will ever recover a penny remains unanswered for now. However, the Judge also issued a broad injunction that should make it much more difficult for ChitramTV to operate and sell its services in the United States.

Broad Injunction

In response to DISH’s requests, Judge Hughes’ order requires ChitramTV to stop distributing the broadcaster’s channels (or the works airing on those channels) in the United States. ChitranTV is also enjoined from distributing, selling, or promoting set-top boxes, subscriptions or services that provide access to DISH content. Importantly, the same also applies to its resellers, meaning that if anyone pops their head above the parapet on ChitramTV’s behalf, DISH is likely to be right there.

The injunction also covers third-party service providers that have (or may in the future) allow ChitramTV to operate in the United States.

Several are named – Private Layer, IP Volume, Cooperative Investments, Owl Protect, Virtual Systems, Alkar0AS and FDCServers – but the list can be expanded to encompass other providers too. None are allowed to assist ChitramTV to distribute DISH content in the United States and are required to comply within 48 hours of receiving the order.

The injunction also covers registries and registrars that currently (or may in future) control ChitramTV-related domains including but not limited to Thulsi.tv, Chitram.tv, Chitram.ca, Oranthservice.site, and Newmembership.net. The .TV Corporation, Verisign, Canadian Internet Registration Authority and Radix FZC (and any future entities) are required to disable and then transfer to DISH any infringing domains. They too have 48 hours to comply with the order.

IBCAP Welcomes The Judgment

The International Broadcaster Coalition Against Piracy (IBCAP), of which DISH is a member, welcomes the decision as it will allow them to shut ChitramTV down and target any resellers that may appear.

“We are very pleased with this legal victory as it will enable us and our members to shut down one of the most popular South Asian pirate services operating in the U.S. The injunctions imposed, along with the transfer of current and future domains associated with ChitramTV, will have a devastating effect on ChitramTV and any dealer selling ChitramTV,” said Chris Kuelling, executive director of IBCAP.

“A dealer that continues to sell ChitramTV after receiving notice of the injunction will be in contempt of the Court’s order and liable for further damages. Dealers should be aware that it’s not worth risking their business by selling pirate IPTV services.”

While the judgement stands, immediately after it was issued Judge Hughes withdrew the entry of default against Dinesh Vigneswaran, the only individual to be personally identified by DISH. The reason is that Vigneswaran did indeed answer the complaint and according to our monitoring of the case, that actually happened in late October. This means that the case is not over just yet.

Vigneswaran Answers Complaint

In a letter accompanying his answer, Vigneswaran says that a summons dated March was dropped off at the porch of his home in May, with another document following up in October. He says that the original documents confused him, in part because the envelope was unmarked, had no stamp, and was sent from the United States.

“It has become common these days that you get calls and mails trying to victimize for fraudulent scam. So I thought this is some false letter and I ignored it. Moreover I didn’t have the time to think or investigate on this [sic],” he told the court.

Vigneswaran went on to explain that he used to work as head of sales for Lycatel’s Lyca TV and during that tenure was approached by someone to promote Chitram TV. At the time he refused but after Lyca lost a few of its channels and customers began asking for refunds, he felt a responsibility to compensate family and friends who had bought the service from him.

What followed was a relationship with ChitramTV, ostensibly to provide a compensatory service to aggrieved customers. Vigneswaran denied that the mentioned websites were ever owned or maintained by him and insisted that he wasn’t an owner of ChitramTV.

“I was forced in this situation because I wanted to safe guard my name and reputation from family and friends and move along for the betterment of my family,” he concluded.

Whether any of this will have a bearing on his fate remains to be seen but by filing an answer and having his reasons for not doing so sooner accepted by the judge, he remains in play. That was confirmed in an email from IBCAP to TorrentFreak stating it is their understanding that the case against Vigneswaran will proceed.

A conference has been scheduled for February 3, 2022.

Microsoft will continue supporting Windows 10 with yearly feature updates

Windows 10 21H2 update is officially releasing today, and it won’t be the last.

Microsoft will continue supporting Windows 10 with yearly feature updates

Microsoft is releasing Windows 10's November 2021 update, also called Windows 10 21H2, to the public today. The company is also clarifying its plans for the future of Windows 10 updates: starting now, Microsoft will continue to provide Windows 10 feature updates once per year, rather than the current twice-per-year schedule. This is meant to sync Windows 10's update schedule with Windows 11's, which is also going to receive major feature updates once per year.

Microsoft hasn't committed to the number of yearly updates it will provide for Windows 10, but the company will support "at least one version" of the OS until update support ends in October of 2025. Microsoft is promising 18 months of support for Windows 10 21H2, so it seems safe to assume that we'll at least see 22H2 and 23H2 releases for Windows 10. For businesses using Windows 10 Enterprise, version 21H2 is also a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) update and will receive update support for five years instead of 18 months.

While more Windows 10 updates will be welcome news for anyone who isn't ready to move to Windows 11 or whose hardware doesn't support the new OS, it's not clear what "feature updates" will entail for an operating system that has been replaced. Microsoft does have a history of backporting some apps and APIs to older versions of Windows to increase adoption of new technologies and reduce the amount of work developers need to do. But there are already some features that are currently exclusive to Windows 11—including 64-bit x86 app emulation on the ARM version of Windows 10, the faster-to-update Microsoft Store version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux, the Windows Subsystem for Android in its entirety, and most of the updated first-party apps—and we'd expect that list to grow rather than shrink.
