Beelink has introduced a new mini PC featuring an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, at least 16GB of RAM, and a 500GB SSD. The Beelink GTR5 mini PC has a suggested retail price of $889, but it’s up for pre-order for $699 and up from Beelink’s website or through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.

Next week Beelink also plans to start taking pre-orders for a nearly identical model called the Beelink GTR4 that will instead ship with a Ryzen 7 4900H processor and sell for $100 less.

Both are compact desktop desktop computers that measure 168 x 120 x 39mm (6.6″ x 4.7″ x 1.5″) but which pack 35-watt AMD processor with 8 CPU cores, 16 threads, Radeon Vega 8 integrated graphics.

The computers support WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 wireless connections and feature two 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports as well as HDMI and DisplayPort, for video output, and three USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, a USB Type-C port, and a headset jack.

Somewhat unusual for a desktop, the computers also have fingerprint sensors for biometric security.

Beelink is selling models with up to 32GB of DDR4-3200 RAM and 500GB of storage, but the Beelink GTR4 and GTR5 are user upgradeable. Each system supports up to 64GB if you want to add your own. There’s also room inside the case for up to three storage devices:

  • 1 x M.2 2280 NVMe SSD
  • 1 x M.2 2280 SATA 3 SSD
  • 1 x 2.5″ SATA HDD or SSD

Other features include dual fans for heat dissipation, a metal chassis, and dual microphones for use with voice assistant or VoIP software.

Beelink says the computers ship with Windows 10 Pro pre-installed, but they qualify for free upgrades to Windows 11 and support alternate operating systems including Ubuntu and Manjaro Linux as well.

The Beelnk GTR5 is up for pre-order now, while the Beelink GTR4 should hit Indiegogo and the Beelink website starting November 24, 2021.

The US has raised potential objections to Nvidia’s controversial acquisition of the UK chip design company Arm from SoftBank, adding a fresh hurdle to a deal that has already stirred up serious opposition on the other side of the Atlantic.

News that American regulators shared European concerns came a day after the UK launched an in-depth investigation into the transaction on competition and national security grounds. The European Commission began its own extended review late last month.

Despite the mounting signs that regulators may try to block the deal, Nvidia said on Wednesday that it still believed “in the merits and benefits of the acquisition to Arm, its licensees and the industry.”

The ONEXPLAYER is a handheld gaming PC with an 8.4 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel IPS LCD touchscreen display surrounded by game controllers. It looks a bit like a big Nintendo Switch, but it’s a full-fledged computer and the controllers aren’t detachable.

When One Netbook first launched the ONEXPLAYER earlier this year, it shipped with an Intel Tiger Lake processor. Now you can also buy models with AMD Ryzen chips.

As expected, the new ONEXPLAYER AMD Edition looks identical to its Intel-powered counterparts. It has the same display, controllers, ports, wireless capabilities, and the same 16GB of LPDDR4X memory and 1TB of PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe solid state storage.

What’s changed is under the hood. The ONEXPLAYER AMD Edition is available with either an AMD Ryzen 7 4800U processor or a newer, slightly more powerful Ryzen 7 5700U chip. That means there are now three pricing/configuration options of the ONEXPLAYER available:

Theoretically you might also be able to find a cheaper Intel model with a 512GB SSD and Core i5-1135G7, Core i7-1165G7, or Core i7-1185G7 processors, as One Netbook did produce some units with those specs for a crowdfunding campaign earlier this year. But at this point there’s very little price difference between the three versions One Netbook is selling through its official AliExpress storefront.

Given that the Ryzen 7 5700U processor has 1.9 GHz Radeon Vega 8 graphics and top CPU speeds of 4.3 GHz, while the Ryzen 7 4800U has a 1.75 GHz GPU and CPU speeds that top out at 4.2 GHz, I’m pretty sure the only reason One Netbook is offering the 4800U option is that there’s limited supply of the newer Ryzen 7 5700U chips.

As for whether it makes sense to opt for a model with an AMD processor rather than an Intel chip, Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics are a little more powerful, but some games might be better optimized for AMD’s Radeon Vega. YouTuber Project-SBC recently shared a head-to-head comparison looking at how Warzone runs on the two devices:

In a nutshell, performance is pretty similar on both: either system will let you play the game at nearly 60 frames per second with a little under two hours of battery life (you’d obviously get substantially longer battery life when watching videos, web surfing, or doing other activities that don’t tax the system’s resources as much as playing AAA games will).

Still, I suppose its nice to have options… although it would be even nicer to have cheaper options. While the ONEXPLAYER is one of the most powerful handheld gaming PCs available today, it’s also one of the most expensive… especially with Valve’s upcoming Steam Deck starting as low as $399 while offering even higher-performance graphics.
