Apple cuts another Intel tie by discontinuing 21.5-inch iMac

Apple has reduced its iMac lineup to the M1-powered 24-inch and Intel-based 27-inch models.

Apple has discontinued the 21.5-inch iMac. The Intel-powered Mac's demise means that the only remaining iMacs are now the colorful, M1-equipped 24-inchers and the 27-inch version, which is still on Intel.

As reported by MacRumors on Saturday, Apple confirmed that it has discontinued the 21.5-inch iMac. This news comes after the removal of several configurations of the iMac in March and dwindling supply in April. The 21.5-inch iMac is no longer available from Apple's online or physical Apple stores unless you get a refurbished one. You may still be able to find unused machines at third-party sellers, MacRumors noted.

Some customers were disappointed that Apple didn't announce a new iMac at the company's Unleashed event earlier this month. In March, Apple also discontinued the 27-inch iMac Pro. Now, the company has further reduced its selection of iMacs.

PC pioneer Michael Dell is set to cap his climb back to the top of the computing world on Monday with one of the largest corporate spin-offs.

Dell Technologies will shed its 81 percent stake in publicly traded VMware, creating an independent software company with a stock market value of nearly $64 billion. Dell’s remaining hardware operations have an implied value of $33 billion, based on its latest share price.

The transaction, first disclosed in April, completes an eight-year saga in which the Texan entrepreneur turned his $3.8 billion interest in an out-of-favor PC maker into a personal stake in a broader data center hardware and software empire worth $40 billion.

The BMW M5 CS is seriously potent, seriously expensive

This is the last-ever gasoline-only M5, and BMW has gone all out.

The first BMW M5 to ever receive the CS treatment is a seriously potent sports sedan, but that performance comes with some notable compromises.

Although today’s M5 is a far cry from the hot-rodded E28 that BMW introduced in 1984, the company has followed a common ethos with the badge throughout the decades. While other M cars like the M1 and M3 have had clear sports car intentions, the M5 has always made more sense as a posh Autobahn missile.

Over time, as the 5-Series has increased in size, weight, and amenities, BMW has leaned further and further into that notion, piling on power and comfort in nearly equal measure with each passing generation. Outfitted with a twin-turbocharged V8, all-wheel drive, and a traditional eight-speed automatic rather than a manual gearbox or a dual-clutch transmission, the current M5 is incredibly capable but also unapologetically civil. Your grandmother could take one to the grocery store and back without incident.

Well, unless it’s an M5 CS. As with the M4 CS and M2 CS that came before it, the M5 Competition Sport package is the swan song for the current-generation car, which brings a significantly stronger focus on outright performance. The result is a sedan that can generate Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times that put sports cars like the latest Corvette or 911 Carrera S in its rear-view mirror.

The Asus Chromebook Flip CX3400 is a convertible notebook with a 14 inch full HD touchscreen display with stylus support and a 360 degree hinge that lets you use the notebook in laptop or tablet mode.

It should also be nearly silent thanks to a fanless design, but with an Intel Tiger Lake processor, it should have more than enough horsepower for most of the things you’d expect to do with a Chromebook.

If the latest Asus Chromebook looks familiar, that’s because it appears to have a nearly identical design to the Asus Chromebook Flip CX5400 that launched earlier this year. But the new model should have a lower starting price since it:

  • Lacks a Thunderbolt port
  • Is available with as little as 4GB of RAM (the CX5400 starts at 8GB)
  • Has a display that tops out at 250 nits brightness (the CX5400 reaches 300 nits)

There is one area where the CX3400 model actually outpaces the CX5400: Both have 720p front-facing webcams, but the new model also has a 5MP world-facing camera that could come in handy if you’re using the computer in tablet mode. It’s placed below the keyboard, which means it will face straight upward in laptop mode, making the camera pretty much useless for anything but tablet mode.

Asus hasn’t announced pricing or availability details yet, but it’s likely that the Chromebook Flip CX3400 will be available at a range of prices since the spec sheet lists a pretty wide variety of spec options including:

  • Processor: Core i3-1110G4, Core i5-1130G7 or Core i7-1160G7
  • RAM: 4GB to 16GB LPDDR4X (onboard, not user upgradeable)
  • Storage: 128GB to 512GB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD (M.2 2280)

Ports on the new laptop include two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, a headset jack, and a microSD card reader and the notebook has a backlit keyboard, stereo speakers, and support for WiFI 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. It features a 50Wh battery and comes with a 45W USB Type-C port supply.

The Asus Chromebook Flip CX3400 measures 12.8″ x 8.7″ x 0.8″ and weighs a little over 3.6 pounds.
