Theranos device “made a bunch of noise” but did nothing else in Safeway demo

Grocer did over 100 hours of due diligence on Theranos deal, ex-CEO says.

Safeway’s ex-CEO said his company did more than 100 hours of due diligence for a deal with Theranos that would ultimately cost the grocery chain over $360 million before the agreement was axed.

Yet even after that research, when Safeway trialed Theranos’ diagnostic devices at its corporate headquarters for almost a year, then-CEO Steven Burd said it became clear that the startup was a mess, losing patients’ tests and returning weird results.

“I think whenever you start something new, you’re going to have some rough spots, but we continued to have rough spots,” he said. “We had samples that were lost. We had results that didn’t make any sense.”

New Acer Chromebooks boast 11th-Gen Intel CPUs for up to $900

Acer announced six new Chromebooks today, ranging from $400–$900.

Acer is releasing half a dozen new Chromebook SKUs, it announced today during its Next@Acer event. The company is updating its lineup with options for Intel's latest 11th Gen "Tiger Lake" CPUs, and although the list includes some of the standard cheaper Chromebook options, Acer also introduced some pricier selections boasting fanless designs for quieter operation.

Fanless two-in-one Chromebooks

The Acer Chromebook Spin 514 and Chromebook Spin Enterprise 514 are the highest-end options. They're more expensive than the average Chromebook (Acer's current offerings go as low as $190), with the standard version costing $700 when it comes out in January and the business-focused version priced at $900 for a December release.

The upcoming two-in-ones (laptops that can convert into tablets) ditch the fans to reduce noise, and that likely helps keep them thin as well. Each machine is 0.68 inches (166.9 mm) thick and weighs 3.02 pounds (1.37 kg).

Acer is updating its ConceptD line of laptops designed for creative folks working on image, video, and game design, among other things.

The new models are high-performance computers with 11th-gen Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series graphics. But there are also some unusual features in select models. For example, the new Acer ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs features a glasses-free 3D display, while the new ConceptD 3 Ezel (CB315-73G) features an easel-like display that pulls forward over the keyboard.

Acer ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition

Acer says this mobile workstation-class computer offers glasses-free stereoscopic 3D effects thanks to a system that uses:

  • Stereo cameras to track the user’s eye position
  • Optical lens bonded to the display panel to refract slightly different images to each eye
  • Real-time rendering software to drive the experience

The laptop has a 15.6 inch, 3840 x 210 pixel IPS display when used in 2D mode, but enable 3D mode and you’re effectively looking at two 1920 x 2160 pixel displays.

The idea is to let folks who are designing 3D graphics interact with those designs without the need to put on a headset, but I’ll be curious to see whether this is any more than a gimmick. At least it sounds more powerful than the 3D display technology Amazon used on the widely-panned Fire Phone.

The laptop itself also packs a lot of horsepower, with an Intel Core i7-11800H processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics, and support for up to 64GB of RAM and 2TB of NVMe solid state storage.

Acer’s laptop is powered by an 84 Wh battery and the notebook measures 15.2″ x  10.2″ x 1″ and weighs about 5.5 pounds.

Those specs (and that stereo display) don’t come cheap though. The ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition laptop will go on sale in Europe in December for about $3600. The laptop will also be available in North America sometime next year, but pricing hasn’t been announced yet.

Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel (CB315-73G)

As we noted when Microsoft launched the Surface Laptop Studio with an easel-like display, this is a design that Acer has been using on and off for years. But it’s hard to resist the urge to compare the latest model with Microsoft’s new premium laptop, because the new Acer ConcetpD 3 Ezel has a bigger, higher-resolution display and a slightly lighter body.

While the Surface Laptop Studio has a 14.4 inch, 2400 x 1600 pixel, 120 Hz display and weighs 3.83 pounds with a 56.3 Wh battery, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel (CB315-73G) is a 3.75 pound notebook with a 15.6 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel display and a 56 Wh battery.

Acer also offers a 74 Wh battery for some models though, which should provide longer battery life.

The new Acer ConceptD3 Ezel has a touchscreen display and support for a pressure-sensitive Wacom EMR digital pen and the laptop will be sold with up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of PCIe Gen 4 NVMe storage, but there are two SODIMM slots for memory, so users can upgrade the notebook with up to 32GB of total RAM.

Other features include NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics and support for WIFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.

Acer says the new ConceptD 3 Ezel will be available in North America in November for $1900 and up, but it will hit Europe first, where it launches in October with prices starting at 2099 Euros. A Pro model with NVIDIA T1200 graphics will also be available for 2199 Euros and up.

Acer ConceptD 3 (CN316-73G)

The new Acer ConceptD 3 clamshell-style notebook with a 16 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel display featuring a 16:10 aspect ratio and 100% sRGB color gamut.

Acer says the notebook measures 0.94″ thick and has a starting weight of 4.9 pounds when configured with a 56 Wh battery, but there’s also a 74 Wh battery option for folks that need longer run time.

The laptop comes with an 11th-gen Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics and supports up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of PCIe Gen 4 solid state storage.

The new Acer ConceptD 3 will be available in North America in January, 2022 for $1700 and up. It will also be available in Europe in October, 2021 for 1800 Euros and up.

Acer Chromebook 514 with MediaTek Kompanio 828 coming in December for $400 and up

The new Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-H/T) is a 14 inch fanless Chrome OS laptop that measures 0.66 inches thick, weighs less than 2.9 pounds, and features an energy-efficient MediaTek Kompanio 828 processor that Acer says should easily provide all-day battery life. Acer’s naming conventions are always a little confusing – this isn’t the first Acer Chromebook CB514, but previous models were powered by Intel Celeron N3350 or N4200 processors.

The new model has an 8-core MediaTek processor with ARM Mali-G57MC5 penta-core graphics, support for up to 128GB of eMMC storage, and up to 8GB of LPDDR4x dual-channel memory.

It has a 14 inch full HD display (with optional touch on some configurations), an aluminum cover, a backlit keyboard, a Corning Gorilla Glass-covered touchpad, stereo speakers with DTS Audio, dual microphones, and support for WiFi 6.

Acer launches bacteria-resistant PCs

Acer expands its “antimicrobial” portfolio.

Acer's “antimicrobial” laptops have been around for a few years, but they became particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic. During its next@Acer event today, the company announced three new PCs—a laptop, a two-in-one, and a tablet—that will be joining its antimicrobial lineup.

What does “antimicrobial” mean, anyway?

Something is considered antimicrobial if it's capable of "destroying or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms and especially pathogenic microorganisms." That means it fights disease-causing things you can't see.

Acer claims its Antimicrobial 360 Design, as it brands the feature, fights germs in two ways.
