GM’s next driver-assist system will be hands-free in “95% of situations”

The advanced system will use lidar, cameras, and radar—and debut in a Cadillac.

Ultra Cruise will ultimately enable door-to-door hands-free driving on all public paved roads in the US and Canada, says the company.

On Wednesday and Thursday, General Motors laid out its plan for the coming years to its investors. The company wants "a world with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion," said Chair and CEO Mary Barra, explaining that GM's investment in electric vehicles and autonomous driving technology has given it an early start.

GM revealed that a new electric Silverado truck will be formally unveiled at CES in 2022, and a $30,000 Chevrolet electric crossover is also in development. Both of these models, as well as electric Buicks, GMCs, Hummer EVs, and Cadillacs, will use GM's new family of Ultium batteries and Ultium Drive motors.

Some or all of those vehicles will be equipped with GM's Super Cruise hands-free driver-assistance system, but the company soon plans to deploy an even more capable hands-free driver-assistance system. Called Ultra Cruise, it will eventually allow for "hands-free driving in 95 percent of all driving scenarios," GM says.

The Start Menu and Taskbar are probably two of the most recognizable features of Windows. But with the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft has given major overhauls to each.

Prefer the way they used to look and function? Microsoft offers limited customization for the Windows 11 Start Menu and Taskbar, but third-party software can help.

Stardock, which has been making Start Menu replacement software for years, has announced that Start11 is now available for purchase for $5.

Available as a Release Candidate for now, the software completely replaces the Windows Start Menu and Taskbar with highly customizable versions. Among other things, it has options for Windows 7 or Windows 10-style Start Menus and Taskbars.

Each layout can be further customized customized with user-selected colors and font and icon sizes, and you can select what items are displayed in the Start Menu.

Don’t like the way that Windows 11 puts all the Taskbar icons in the center? Start11 can move them to the left side of the screen, and you can also choose custom Taskbar accent colors, textures, and texture transparency settings.

Don’t like the way the Windows 11 Taskbar can only be pinned to the bottom of the screen? Start11 allows you to move it to the top.

And if you’re cool with the whole stuff-in-the-center idea, but really prefer the functionality of an older Start Menu style, the app lets you do mix and match those features – you can use a Windows 7 style Start Menu but have it pop up from the center of the screen, for example.

While the app is called Start11, it’s also compatible with Windows 10 PCs, which means that you could also theoretically use it to get a Windows 11-like Start Menu and Taskbar without upgrading your operating system.

Gaming peripherals-maker SteelSeries is being purchased by GN, the owner of audio equipment company Jabra. The deal announced Wednesday gives GN access to SteelSeries’ headsets, keyboards, mice, and other peripherals for PC and console gaming, as well as its sub-brands, like Nahimic.

Denmark-based GN is buying SteelSeries from Axcel, a Nordic private equity firm, in a deal that reportedly amounts to 8 billion DKK (about $1.2 billion).

Founded in 2001 in Denmark, SteelSeries has made a name for itself with a large selection of advanced peripherals targeting console and PC gamers. As an audio company, GN is undoubtedly interested in SteelSeries’ Arctis headset lineup, which comprises a wide range of prices and form factors and has become a go-to brand among gamers. SteelSeries also has a reputation with other types of peripherals, including its Apex Pro mechanical keyboard (you’ll regularly see gamers sharing social media posts of the keyboard as they peel the sticker off its unique OLED screen).

Windows 11 bug could reduce Ryzen CPU performance by up to 15%, AMD says

Software fixes for the problems are coming later this month.

Windows 11 bug could reduce Ryzen CPU performance by up to 15%, AMD says

Most people shouldn't rush out to install brand-new operating system versions on day one, and Windows 11 is no exception to that rule. AMD has published information about a pair of bugs that can reduce performance for Ryzen processors running Windows 11 by as much as 15 percent, though how much slowdown you observe will vary based on what you're doing and the CPU you're using. AMD expects both bugs to be fixed later this month.

The first issue AMD has identified increases L3 cache latency by up to three times, affecting apps that rely on fast memory performance. AMD says that most affected apps will slow down by between 3 and 5 percent but that some "games commonly used for eSports" could see dips of between 10 and 15 percent. AMD says that a Windows update will fix this issue later this month, so as long as you're checking for and installing Windows updates regularly, you won't need to do anything special to resolve the problem.

The second bug is related to an AMD processor feature that tries to use your fastest individual CPU cores when running lightly threaded tasks rather than treating all cores the same. AMD doesn't put a number on this one but says the problem "may be more detectable" in processors with eight or more cores and a 65 W or higher TDP. This would include most 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000-series Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 desktop CPUs and APUs. AMD says that a "software update," not a Windows update, will be released to fix the problem later in October, so you may need to install new AMD chipset drivers or some other software to get the fix.

Safeway spent $367M to prepare for Theranos tests that never came

Elizabeth Holmes’ charisma sealed the deal, but Theranos never delivered.

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes’ charisma may have convinced the CEO of a major grocery store chain to form a partnership with the company, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the relationship from souring when the blood-testing startup inevitably couldn’t deliver on its promises.

In court for Holmes’ criminal trial yesterday, former Safeway CEO Steven Burd described how his admiration of Holmes and her company rose and then fell over the course of three years, from 2010 until 2013, when he retired. Holmes has been charged with 10 counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

When Burd first heard of Holmes’ startup and its promised rapid blood testing technology, he said he was “immediately interested in meeting Theranos, particularly the founder.” The idea that people could give a small amount of blood and quickly receive the results “was a fascinating concept.”

Google is set to officially launch the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones on October 19th, but the company has already given us some idea of what to expect from the first phones powered by a Google Tensor processor.

Now a series of leaks are fleshing things out a bit with more details about specs, pricing, functionality, and accessories.

This week a German retailer released a print ad showing a €649 price tag for the entry-level Google Pixel 6 smartphone with 8GB Of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 4,620 mAh battery, and dual cameras (50MP + 12MP).

That’s the equivalent of $750 in US dollars, but given the way smartphones are priced globally, I expect that the Pixel 6 will actually sell for somewhere in the $650 to $750 range in the US, while the Pixel 6 Pro (with a bigger screen, larger battery, and an extra camera) will cost more.

And then Even Blass shared a new set of images of the Pixel 6 that show off a number of new things, some of which had been rumored, but not actually seen yet, including:

  • A new Pixel Stand for wireless charging
  • Live Space widget (which replaces At a Glance) showing things like upcoming flights, complete with QR codes for boarding passes
  • A new Pixel Security app
  • Face and Fingerprint unlock support (shown in the Security settings)

One image also confirms that the Pixel 6 Pro’s camera system includes a 50MP wide-angle lens, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 48MP telephoto lens. And multiple images show Pixel 6 series phones with water drops on the back, indicating that the phones will be waterproof.

While the Pixel 6 series phones will ship with Android 12 software, they’ll also include some Google-specific apps and features including that aforementioned Pixel Security app, so images that show off the lock screen and home screen widgets also give us an idea of what the user interface will look like, complete with new weather and clock widgets.

You can find more details in Evan Blass’s Twitter thread:
