New versions of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution come out every six months, but most are only officially supported with bug fixes and security updates for nine months.
But every two years Canonical issues an LTS (long term support) release. Up until a few years ago that meant you’d get five years of support. But starting with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Canonical began offering 10 years of support through an Extended Security Maintenance program. Now the company is reaching back and extending the lifecycles of some older versions of Ubuntu.
Canonical has revealed that Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04 will also now both get 10 years of support from the time of release.
That means Ubuntu 14.04, which was released in April, 2014, will now be supported until April, 2024. And Ubuntu 16.04 will be supported until April, 2026, which marks ten years since its initial release.
Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 20.04 will be supported until April, 2028 and 2030, respectively, but that’s not a change – those were the original “end of life” dates for those operating systems.
What’s new is that individuals or businesses running older versions of Canonical’s operating system can now continue using it for longer without upgrading to a more recent build and/or losing support for software and security updates.
One thing to keep in mind is that unlike the basic 5-years of support available for free with all Ubuntu LTS releases, you do need a subscription to take advantage of extended support. But Canonical offers an “Ubuntu Advantage Essentials” subscription with extended support maintenance free for individuals that want to use it on up to three machines. Enterprise customers who need more than that and/or want phone and ticket support can pay for a subscription.

HP says its newest Spectre x360 premium thin and light laptop offers a 10% boost in CPU performance and 17% faster graphics than the previous-generation thanks to its 11th-gen Intel Core-H35 processor and support for up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 graphics.
But there are two more things that set the HP Spectre x360 16 apart from last year’s model. First, the new model has a 16 inch display, up from 15.6 inches. And second, it has a 5MP camera with support for AI features, which could come in handy at a time when video conferencing has become a part of everyday life. The HP Spectre x360 16 will be available in October for $1639 and up.
Up until recently, most PC makers stuffed low-quality 720p cameras into their laptops. But the increased demand for decent cameras during the pandemic has started to change that, and HP says its 5MP wide-angle camera not only records sharper video, but also works with HP software to enable artificial intelligence features including:
The camera also has infrared features for use with Windows Hello face recognition and there’s a shutter that can cover the camera when it’s not in use. The notebook also has a fingerprint reader.
The HP Spectre x360 16 is powered by up to an Intel Core i7-11390H Tiger Lake-H35 quad-core processor with Iris Xe graphics, features DDR4-3200 memory (soldered to the mainboard and not user upgradeable), and comes with a PCIe NVMe SSD as well as support for optional Intel Optane memory.
HP equipped the notebook with a 16:10 aspect ratio display and slim bezels for a 91% screen-to-body ratio. Several display panel options are available, including 3072 x 1920 x pixel IPS LCD or OLED touchscreen displays. HP also offers an active pen with support for pressure-sensitive input and tilt detection.
Since the Spectre x360 16 has a 360-degree hinge, you can fold the screen back for use in tablet, tent, or stand modes as well as traditional laptop mode.
Ports include two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0b port, a 10 Gbps USB Type-A port, and a headset jack as well as a power jack (you can also use the Thunderbolt ports for charging though). There’s also a microSD card reader.
Wireless features include support for up to a WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 card.
The laptop has a backlit keyboard, quad speakers with Bang & Olufsen audio, and an 83 Wh battery. It comes with a 90W power adapter and HP says you can charge the battery from 0 to 50% by plugging it in for 45 minutes.
The HP Spectre x360 16 measures 14.1″ x 9.7″ x 0.8″ and weighs about 4.5 pounds.

The new HP 11″ Tablet is a $500 Windows tablet designed for the world we’re currently living in. And by that, I mean it has a versatile camera designed for making video calls. The tablet’s single 13MP rotates at up to a 235 degree angle.
When placed on the back of the tablet, you can use the camera to snap photos or shoot videos. Flip it 180 degrees and you it becomes a front-facing camera for video calls. And flip it to a 235 degree angle and you can show participants in the call whatever is on your desk. And that’s just one of the things that makes the HP 11″ Tablet stand out.
Like most tablets, it’s also designed for use in portrait or landscape mode, but HP’s tablet also has a kickstand that allows you to stand it up in either mode. There are also pogo pins along two sides, allowing you to connect a keyboard in either mode.
The HP 11″ Tablet has a widescreen (or tallscreen) 2.1K display, and HP notes that it gives you plenty of real estate for using Windows 11 snapping to position two or more apps on the screen at the same time. There’s also support for pen input for writing or drawing using the HP Rechargeable Tilt Pen, which is sold separately.
While the tablet is designed for use a standalone computer, the it also supports HP Duet software, which allows you to use the tablet as a second screen for another PC.
HP’s new tablet features an 11 inch, 2160 x 1440 pixel IPS LCD display with support for 100% sRGB color gamut, up to 400 nits of brightness, and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for scratch resistance.
Under the hood, it’s powered by an Intel Pentium Silver N6000 Jasper Lake processor, which is a 6-watt, quad-core/quad-thread processor designed for low-cost devices rather than high-performance computers. But it should deliver around 30% better performance than previous-gen chips based on Intel Gemini Lake Refresh architecture.
Other specs include 4GB of LPDDR4x-2133 memory, 128GB of PCIe NVMe solid state storage, and support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.
The tablet has a 5Gbps USB Type-C port with support for video output and charging, plus a microSD card and pogo pins for use with the detachable keyboard.
The HP 11 inch tablet has a 32.2 Wh battery and comes with a 30 watt USB-C charger that the company says will give you a 50% charge in about 45 minutes.
HP’s tablet measures 9.9″ x 7″ x 0.3″ and the keyboard is 9.” x 7.1″ x 0.2″. The tablet and keyboard combined weigh about 2 pounds, while the tablet alone is 1.45 pounds.
Interestingly the kickstand is a detachable magnetic accessory that adds another 0.2 inches and about half a pound tp the dimensions and weight.
First announced in September, 2021, the HP 11″ Tablet is now available from best Buy for $500 and up. The starting price gets you just the tablet, while you can also pay an extra $100 for a bundle that includes the HP 11″ tablet and a detachable keyboard.
Neither version comes with a pen, but HP says the tablet supports its HP Rechargeable Tilt Pen, which is a Microsoft Pen Protocol stylus, which suggests that you should be able to use third-party pens that support MPP as well.

Anyway, back to the HP Laptop 14. It will be available with up to 8GB of LPDDR4x-4266 memory and 128GB of eMMC storage, features WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 support, and has stereo speakers, a 720p webcam with an 88-degree wide angle lens, and a fingerprint reader.
