The Oculus Go was Facebook’s first standalone virtual reality headset and with a starting price under $200, it was one of the most affordable ways to dabble with VR until Facebook discontinued the Go last summer. Still have one lying around though? You might be able to do a lot more with it soon.

Former Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack has announced that the company will soon offer an unlocked operating system for the Oculus Go that allows user to “get full root access.”

The new software won’t be available as an over-the-air update, which means it won’t be pushed automatically to all users. But folks who want to use it will be able to install it themselves, replacing the version of the Oculus operating system that came with the Go.

Carmack says the move will allow users “to repurpose the hardware for more things today,” and it also means that after Facebook shuts down the over-the-air-update servers for the Oculus Go, users who take an unused unit out of a box will still be able to download and install the last official software release.

Theoretically the move could also open the door for new types of third-party software for the Oculus Go, assuming there’s interest from developers. The bootloader will also be unlockable, which might make it possible to develop modified or entirely new operating systems for the headset.

Carmack, who was also co-founder and lead programmer for id Software when it developed classic games including DoomQuake, and Wolfensten 3D has a history of leaving the door open to future development after his companies stop working on a product. Doom, for instance, has had quite the afterlife after id Software released the source code in 1997, allowing the game to be ported to run on everything from smart light bulbs to desk phones.

He notes that while there are currently no plans to release open, unlocked firmware for other devices like the newer Oculus Quest, he does hope that the move to open the Oculus Go firmware will set a precedent.

Tesla tests drivers to trust them to supervise experimental Autopilot

Beta testers are already reporting worrying results with the new software.

Tesla Autopilot is currently under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for 12 crashes and one death. Now the company is expanding access to an experimental version of the software.

Over the weekend, Tesla expanded access to the latest version of the company's highly controversial $10,000 automated driving feature. As is the Tesla way, CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce the news, saying that owners could begin requesting access to the beta on Saturday. However, Musk noted that "FSD 10.1 needs another 24 hours of testing, so out tomorrow night."

For now, access to the latest build of the software is by no means assured. Instead, drivers have to agree to have their driving monitored by Tesla for seven days. If they're deemed safe drivers, they can have access to the experimental software. By contrast, autonomous vehicle companies like Argo AI put their test drivers through extensive training to ensure they're able to safely supervise experimental autonomous driving systems while they are being tested on public roads, which is an entirely different task from that of safely driving a car manually.

Better not brake

Tesla says that five factors affect whether or not you're safe enough a driver to then perform the task of supervising an unfinished automated driving system that is currently under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a dozen crashes into parked emergency vehicles, including one fatality.

Facebook has suspended plans to launch Instagram Kids, a version of its photo-sharing app for children under the age of 13, as criticism of the project gathered momentum in Washington.

Adam Mosseri, who runs the Facebook-owned app, denied that the decision to “pause” development work on Instagram Kids was an admission that the concept was a “bad idea” and added that it was still the “right thing to do” to build a standalone app that offers parents more control and supervision.

Still, Mosseri said in a statement on Monday: “I hear the concerns with this project, and we’re announcing these steps today so we can get it right.”
