Study contributes to Apple’s messaging about the Watch’s impact on health care.
A new study on the effectiveness of the Apple Watch and iPhone as tools for measuring functional capacity in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been published by researchers at Stanford University.
The study, which involved 110 participants, found that the health-monitoring capabilities in these products could supplement or replace in-clinic tests for "frailty" in patients with CVD.
Frailty in this case is measured in terms of the distance a patient can travel in a six-minute walk. This is normally tested with a six-minute walk test (6MWT), and frailty was defined in the study "as walking <300m on an in-clinic 6MWT."

Following a leak in February, Xiaomi's Mi 11 Ultra went official today. This phone's main claim to fame is the inclusion of a second display tucked away in the camera bump. Plus, now that the official specs are out, we can see that "world's largest camera bump" also houses one of the world's largest smartphone camera sensors, the Samsung GN2.
The base specs are on the high end for a high-end 2021 Android phone: a 120 Hz, 6.81-inch, 3200×1440 front OLED display; a Snapdragon 888; 12GB of RAM; 256GB of storage; IP68 dust and water resistance; Android 11 with MIUI; and a 5000 mAh battery. Xiaomi offers 67 W wired and wireless charging, which, along with OnePlus, is a tier above most other phones. Xiaomi touted the 5000 mAh battery as being a "silicon-oxygen" battery, although the company failed to point to any serious benefit from its new battery formula. There's also Wi-Fi 6E, which greatly expands the capacity of Wi-Fi by adding 6 GHz spectrum alongside the existing 2.4 Ghz and 5 GHz bands.
On the back, you get a 1.1-inch, 126×294 display with touch support. Xiaomi says the rear display supports an always-on display mode showing the time, date, and notifications. It can also act as a tiny viewfinder for rear-camera selfies. There are three rear cameras, but the big news is that the main camera features a Samsung GN2 sensor. This is a giant 50 MP, 1/1.12″ sensor, with a 1.4μm pixel size and quad pixel binning. The 1/1.12″ sensor size means modern smartphones are finally starting to match the Nokia 808's hardware, a groundbreaking camera phone released all the way back in 2012. The 808 also had a 1/1.12″ sensor with a 1.4μm pixel size, and despite being 9 years old, it's still able to stand up to modern devices.

Company claims it warned FBI about violent posts before everything hit the fan.
Embattled right-wing social media firm Parler infamously promises its users a laissez-faire approach to "free speech" on its service. As the company now tells Congress, however, Parler apparently does warn federal authorities when it discovers certain kinds of violent content on its platform—and users who flock to the site for its anything-goes attitude are mad.
Parler's attorneys explained in a letter (PDF) to the House Oversight Committee that it apparently does have limits on what it finds acceptable and did take seriously some of the violent content posted to its platform ahead of the January 6 events at the US Capitol.
Parler "has acted to remove incitement and threats of violence from its platform and did so numerous times in the days before the unlawful rioting at the Capitol," the letter explains. It goes on:
AT&T admits fiber is most “future-proof” but wants US to fund slower networks.
AT&T is lobbying against proposals to subsidize fiber-to-the-home deployment across the US, arguing that rural people don't need fiber and should be satisfied with Internet service that provides only 10Mbps upload speeds.
AT&T Executive VP Joan Marsh detailed the company's stance Friday in a blog post titled "Defining Broadband For the 21st Century." AT&T's preferred definition of 21st-century broadband could be met with wireless technology or AT&T's VDSL, a 14-year-old system that brings fiber to neighborhoods but uses copper telephone wires for the final connections into each home.
"[T]here would be significant additional cost to deploy fiber to virtually every home and small business in the country, when at present there is no compelling evidence that those expenditures are justified over the service quality of a 50/10 or 100/20Mbps product," AT&T wrote. (That would be 50Mbps download speeds with 10Mbps upload speeds or 100Mbps downloads with 20Mbps uploads.

Code gave code-execution powers to anyone who knew the secret password: “zerodium.”
A hacker compromised the server used to distribute the PHP programming language and added a backdoor to source code that would have made websites vulnerable to complete takeover, members of the open source project said.
Two updates pushed to the PHP Git server over the weekend added a line that, if run by a PHP-powered website, would have allowed visitors with no authorization to execute code of their choice. The malicious commits here and here gave the code the code-injection capability to visitors who had the word “zerodium” in an HTTP header.
The commits were made to the php-src repo under the account names of two well-known PHP developers, Rasmus Lerdorf and Nikita Popov. “We don't yet know how exactly this happened, but everything points toward a compromise of the git.php.net server (rather than a compromise of an individual git account),” Popov wrote in a notice published on Sunday night.
