Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine looks good in early analysis

If the results hold up—a big if—we’ll have another good vaccine option.

Yesterday, the people behind Russia's leading vaccine, termed Sputnik V, issued a preliminary analysis of its function. The news was quite good: while the trial is ongoing and final results will have to wait, the interim data suggests that the vaccine could be over 90 percent effective.

Sputnik V is based on similar technology to the vaccines being developed by Johnson & Johnson and the Oxford/AstraZeneca collaboration. Strikingly, however, the preliminary efficiency is quite a bit higher than those vaccines are showing, and it's not clear how the Sputnik-specific features could account for the difference.

Sounds great!

The results come out of a Phase III clinical trial involving roughly 21,000 participants being run in Moscow. Participants were all over the age of 18, hadn't received other vaccinations recently, weren't pregnant or drug users, and met a number of other criteria. PCR-based SARS-CoV-2 tests were performed at enrollment, and participants were also tested for the presence of antibodies against the virus.

Pornhub brings in third-party “identity verification” system for users

Ideally, the arrangement would both confirm consent and keep performer data private.

Adult website Pornhub this week announced a slew of new security features and policies as it tries to get back in the world's good graces in the wake of abuse allegations it faced late last year.

Pornhub is adding "comprehensive measures for verification, moderation, and detection" of uploaded content to verify that the videos on its platform feature consenting adults and not "potentially illegal material," including exploitation of minors, the company said in a press release (PDF) this week.

The site—and its parent company MindGeek—found itself in the spotlight in early December as New York Times opinion columnist Nicholas Kristof published a feature alleging that Pornhub "monetizes child rapes, revenge pornography, spy cam videos of women showering, racist and misogynist content, and footage of women being asphyxiated in plastic bags." Kristof spoke to several women who said videos of them being sexually assaulted were uploaded to Pornhub without their knowledge or consent and that having them removed was all but impossible due to the site's upload and download policies.

A year and a half after Amazon announced that it would buy 100,000 electric trucks to reduce its carbon footprint, Amazon says it has begun using prototype vehicles for real-world deliveries in Los Angeles. Amazon expects to spend a few more months testing the vehicles before the start of mass production later this year.

Amazon placed the massive order with Rivian, a startup that has raised billions of dollars to build electric trucks. Amazon is a Rivian investor.

Rivian has designed a "skateboard" electric truck platform that can be used to build a wide variety of vehicles. Rivian is aiming to begin deliveries of its flagship pickup truck, the R1T, and the R1S SUV later this year.
