AT&T sells Crunchyroll to Sony for $1.2B amid “streamlining” efforts

Sony will be by far the biggest US player in this rapidly growing market.

Those of us who are old enough to have clear memories of video stores may remember the time when "Japanimation" comprised a single bottom shelf of battered VHS cases near the back of the shop. These days, however, anime distribution in the US is a billion-dollar business—or, more specifically, a $1.2 billion business, as that's what Sony is paying in cash to acquire Crunchyroll from AT&T.

Crunchyroll has more than 90 million users in 200 countries, including more than 3 million subscribers to its streaming service, the companies said in a joint press release. It also distributes mobile games, manga, and merchandise and manages events. Sony will eventually be folding Crunchyroll into its existing Funimation anime distribution business.

Crunchyroll currently falls under the WarnerMedia division of AT&T, and it's not a surprise that AT&T is selling it off. The company is hemorrhaging pay-TV subscribers and trying to sell off the DirecTV division, which it paid $49 billion to acquire only five years ago. (Recent reports say potential buyers are offering figures closer to $16 billion.)

Google breaks SMS on many Android phones, is rolling back changes now

Android’s Carrier Services app, which has over a billion downloads, is on the fritz.

If the text messages on your Android phone have suddenly stopped working, you're not alone. Google pushed out a bad copy of the Carrier Services app, and the result was broken SMS on many Android phones. It also sounds like the company is rolling back the update and fixing the problem.

Carrier Services is a little-known Android system component that popped up on the Play Store in 2017. This highly privileged app with the package name "com.google.android.ims" is part of Android's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)—the collection of 3GPP standards that lets your phone connect to the cellular network and typically delivers voice, video, and text, including the fancy stuff like Voice over LTE, Wi-Fi calling, and RCS, a more modern replacement for SMS. Google typically uses this app to push new RCS features out to users, but it can also be used to rapidly distribute bugs to users when things go wrong. With over a billion Play Store downloads as a default Android app, it has a big reach.

Google pushed out version 50 of Carrier Services, and afterward, many users—including Samsung, OnePlus, LG, Motorola, and TCL customers—have reported sending-and-receiving issues for SMS. Android Police says it has received some reports of users being automatically downgraded to the previous working version of the app, Carrier Services v48.

Torrentz2 Mystery Downtime Continues but its .Onion Domain Works Fine

Popular torrent meta-search engine Torrentz2 is still having issues. The main domains have returned ‘503 errors’ for more than two weeks now and the operator is unresponsive. Meanwhile, Torrentz2’s official .onion domain, which is accessible over the Tor network, is operating as usual and indexing fresh links.

torrentz2Without prior warning, Torrentz2 suddenly started to return a ‘503 Service Unavailable‘ error two weeks ago.

From one day to the next millions of regular visitors were left in the cold, effectively disconnected from their gateway to dozens of torrent sites.

Torrentz2 Troubles Continue

After more than two weeks have passed, the situation hasn’t changed. The same error is still present on the side and official mirrors, including Torrentz.pl and Torrentsmirror.com have the same problem.

Since our coverage, we have reached out to the operator multiple times, without any response. This is quite unusual, especially since the emails are being delivered just fine.

This isn’t the first problem Torrentz2 has encountered this year. In June, the official Torrentz2.eu domain name was suspended by the EURid registry, an action that was taken following an order from the Belgian Public Prosecutor in Brussels.

In response, Torrentz2 quickly moved to the .is domain name. The current problems, which are technical in nature, don’t seem to be going away easily.

Torrentz2 .Onion Site Works

Adding to the mystery, we found out that the official onion domain still gives access to the full site. Not just that, the site’s backend is working too as the search engine continues to be updated with fresh links.

.oinion domain is operational

torrentz onion

The domain ‘torrentzwealmisr.onion’ wasn’t promoted on the Torrentz2 site over the past months but during the years before it was prominently listed on the site’s footer. So it’s certainly not a copycat.

Through the .onion address people can still access Torrentz2 over the anonymous Tor-network, with the Tor browser for example. In addition, it’s possible to access it through regular browsers by adding .ly to the .onion domain.

Good News?

Avid Torrentz2 users may welcome this news but it’s unknown whether this is really positive.

There is clearly something ‘broken’ at the main site. In addition, the lack of communication and action from the operator is troubling. Yes, the onion domain works, but for how long?

The problems at Torrentz2 are not just affecting the site’s operator and users, third-party torrent sites are also feeling it too. Some smaller torrent sites received a lot of traffic from the meta-search engine. That traffic is now missing.

For now, it appears that the uncertainty around Torrentz2’s future will continue. We will keep an eye on the situation and if there’s any news we’ll report on it in due course.

Brave Software, maker of the Brave Web browser, is introducing a news reader that’s designed to protect user privacy by preventing parties—both internal and third party—from tracking the sites, articles, and story topics people view.

Brave Today, as the service is called, is using technology that the company says sets it apart from news services offered by Google and Facebook. It’s designed to deliver personalized news feeds in a way that leaves no trail for Brave, ISPs, and third parties to track. The new service is part of Brave’s strategy of differentiating its browser as more privacy-friendly than its competitors'.

Key to Brave Today is a new content delivery network the company is unveiling. Typically, news services use a single CDN to cache content and then serve it to users. This allows the CDN or the service using it to see both the IP address and news feed of each user, and over time, that data can help services build detailed profiles of a person’s interests.
