Razer’s Blade Pro 17 sports a 300Hz display, Nvidia RTX Super GPUs

Not a radical update, but another slick-looking option for power-hungry gamers.

Razer on Thursday announced a new version of its Razer Blade Pro 17 gaming laptop. Like its predecessor, the device is aimed squarely at gamers and content creators looking for a powerful yet relatively thin 17-inch notebook.

This year’s Blade Pro 17 comes in three main variants. The lower two feature 17.3-inch 1080p displays and either an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q or higher-tier RTX 2080 Super Max-Q GPU. The top-end model features a sharper 4K panel with greater brightness (400 nits versus 300) and support for the more vibrant Adobe RGB color space, as it did with last year’s iteration. It now features an RTX 2080 Super Max-Q graphics card as well.

Of note here is that the 1080p models feature a super-fast 300Hz refresh rate, up from the 240Hz option in last year’s lineup. (The 4K display is 120Hz.) This has been a growing trend among gaming laptops in recent months—Razer, for one, already introduced a 300Hz option with its latest Blade 15 notebook. As display research site BlurBusters has noted, even if a gaming laptop is only capable of actually reaching 300fps in older or less-demanding titles like CS:GO or Overwatch, having an ultra-high refresh rate can still help reduce motion blur and make mouse and Web-browsing effects appear more fluid.

Crypto hedge funds struggle to recover from “bloodbath”

Volatility in cryptocurrency prices causes big losses for highly-leveraged funds.

Vlad Matveev has learned the hard way how volatile cryptocurrency hedge funds can be.

The 50-year-old Muscovite invested $250,000 last year with California-based Cryptolab Capital, which targeted double-digit gains from trading crypto regardless of whether the market rose or fell. But Matveev said his investment fell 98.5 percent in value when the fund folded in this year’s coronavirus-induced turmoil.

“I don’t really know what happened,” said Matveev, a fund manager-turned-private investor. “They said they had a diversified set of strategies.”

Tropical cyclones are already getting stronger, new dataset shows

Satellite records are now long enough to show a trend in intensity.

Science is relatively straightforward when you can compare a model prediction to data and assume that the former accurately represents our theories and the latter accurately represents what's going on in nature. But the data isn't always up to the task of providing a good representation of the natural world for one reason or another. That’s part of what makes the relationship between climate change and tropical cyclones something that requires a bit of explanation.

Trend spotting

From climate-model projections (and basic physics), some things are pretty well established: sea level rise worsens storm surge damage, warmer temperatures increase the atmosphere’s ability to hold water vapor (and dump it as rain), and warmer temperatures increase the energy available to make tropical cyclones stronger. Sea level rise is obviously easy enough to measure, but checking records of tropical cyclones for trends in intensity is much more complicated.

This is partly because tropical cyclones in different ocean basins can be affected by natural variations in regional atmospheric patterns and ocean temperatures. But the larger problem is that our methods of collecting data on tropical cyclones have changed—and improved—over time. If a trend appears in the data, is it real or is it just an artifact of the advent of comprehensive satellite coverage? (A trend possibly extended by improvements in satellite resolution or instrumentation.)
