Former Kinox.to & Movie4k.to Admin Freed, Tax Office Retrieves €1.75m

One of the former administrators of piracy giants Kinox.to & Movie4k.to has been released from prison. Unlike his brother, who is still on the run, Kreshnik Selimi has cooperated with German authorities, helping the tax office retrieve around 1.75 million euros.

The story of pirate streaming sites Kinox.to and Movie4k.to is one of the most unusual on record.

Serving as a replacement for Kino.to, a site that was taken down almost eight years ago in one of Europe’s largest ever anti-piracy operations, Kinox.to quickly grew to become a potent successor. Three years later, however, things took a turn for the worse.

In October 2014, Germany-based investigators acting on behalf of the Attorney General carried out raids in several regions of the country looking for four main suspects.

Two of those were brothers, Kreshnik and Kastriot Selimi. Then aged 21 and 25-years-old, the pair were said to be the main operators of Kinox.to and Movie4k.to. They immediately went on the run.

In 2017, there was a breakthrough. Younger brother Kreshnik, who by this time had reached 24, was detained after handing himself over to authorities in Kosovo. Little has been heard of him since.

Now, however, a Handelsblatt report indicates the now 26-year-old has been released from prison after spending just nine months in custody, partly in prisons in the Balkans.

For a man who was originally being hounded down for alleged crimes include predatory blackmail, armed robbery, extortion, arson, copyright infringement and tax evasion, Kreshnik appears to have won over the authorities by being cooperative on the money front.

After making a confession, Kreshnik reportedly helped the German tax office recover around 1.75 million euros.

“We have therefore set the procedure for victim-offender compensation,” said prosecutor Wolfgang Klein. In this case, the victim is the tax office, Handelsblatt reports.

Kreshnik is now being described as playing the part of an “economically legitimate straw man” of two companies based in Hong Kong, which received funds funneled through Cyprus from advertising companies affiliated with the streaming sites.

As highlighted by Tarnkappe, much of the details concerning how the sites operated, under whose control, and when, is still up for debate. Nevertheless, both Kinox.to and Movie4k.to remain stubbornly online today, despite all the chaos several years ago.

What is clear, however, is that the authorities have never caught up with Kastriot Selimi, Kreshnik’s older brother. He remains on the run after four years with charges of predatory extortion, coercion, arson and tax evasion still hanging over this head.

Whether the police will ever detain the alleged pirate site operator will remain to be seen, but others involved in the site have indeed fallen.

In December 2015, Arvit O (aka “Pedro”) who handled technical issues on KinoX, was sentenced to 40 months in prison for his involvement in the site.

Arvit O was found guilty of copyright infringement by the District Court of Leipzig. The then 29-year-old admitted to infringing 2,889 works. The Court also found that he hacked the computers of two competitors in order to improve Kinox’s market share.

KinoX.to made headlines again in February 2018, for being the first pirate site to be blocked by ISPs in Germany. It’s been playing cat and mouse with the authorities ever since, using alternative domains and mirror sites to evade the blockades.

Terrifying trailer for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will give you mega-chills

Guillermo del Toro brings the terror in adaptation of spooky children’s book series.

It's 1968 in the small town of Mill Valley, home to a haunted mansion and a mysterious book, in Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark.

All those frightening tales kids tell around the campfires to spook their friends come to terrifying life in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, a new film from producer Guillermo del Toro. It's based on a series of children's books from the 1980s by Alvin Schwartz, who drew upon common folklore and popular urban legends for his scary stories.

Remember that classic campfire ditty, "the worms crawl in the worms crawl out/the worms play pinochle on your snout"? So does Schwartz. It's the basis for his scary story "The Hearse Song." You'll also find variations on the killer with a hook for a hand who preys on couples necking in parked cars. So too the hapless babysitter who discovers the call is coming from inside the house, along with plenty of other frightening fare. (The 2018 documentary Scary Stories delves more deeply into Schwartz's source material.)

While the books are technically aimed at kids, the material is pretty dark, which is why the series has often been listed among the most challenged books by the American Library Association. People have objected to the violence in Scary Stories series—and illustrator Stephen Gammell's genuinely disturbing, surreal images only add to the potential nightmares. In fact, publisher Harper Collins released a new 30th-anniversary edition in 2011 that didn't include Gammell's original illustrations, causing an uproar among longtime fans.

Former NSA contractor pleads guilty to stealing classified material

Former NSA contractor pleads guilty to stealing classified material

Harold Thomas Martin III, the former National Security Agency contractor charged with hoarding more than 50 terabytes of sensitive data at his Maryland home, has pleaded guilty to one felony count of willful retention of National Defense information. In return, federal prosecutors agreed to drop 19 existing charges and seek a sentence of nine years in prison.

The plea provides an anticlimactic and unsettling end to one chapter in an ongoing saga over how the NSA—the world’s foremost spy and hacking agency—protects its vast arsenal of weaponized exploits. When the charges against Martin first became public in late 2016, the NSA was still reeling from the leak of highly classified NSA exploits two months earlier by a mysterious group calling itself the Shadow Brokers. Martin first came to investigators’ attention as they searched for the source of the Shadow Brokers leak. The hope at the time was investigators had found the culprit.

As it turned out, the Shadow Brokers published a series of increasingly vexing follow-on leaks that continued into 2017, well after Martin’s arrest in August 2016. Speaking in deliberately exaggerated broken English published in Internet dispatches, the Shadow Brokers publicly taunted the NSA and made veiled references to top-secret exploits.
