Google CEO Sundar Pichai will face lawmakers at a hearing next week

“Search engines can be used to suppress particular viewpoints,” Congressman says.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai is scheduled to testify before Congress next Wednesday, December 5. The hearing will give members of the House Judiciary Committee a long-awaited opportunity to grill Pichai about a wide range of issues, from user privacy to free speech in China.

Google angered some members of Congress in September when the company refused to send either one of its two most senior executives—Pichai or Alphabet CEO Larry Page—to testify before a September hearing on election security before the Senate Intelligence Committee. That hearing featured Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg—as well as an empty chair marked "Google."

According to the Washington Post, next week's hearing is occurring at the request of House Majority leader Kevin McCarthy, who has raised concerns that Google may be biased against conservatives—and that this bias may be seeping into the policies of Google's search engine, YouTube, and other products. A recently-leaked video showed Google executives openly mourning Hillary Clinton's loss after the 2016 election.

Anti-Piracy Group BREIN Stopped 75 Pirate IPTV Sellers This Year

Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN has convinced 75 vendors of copyright-infringing IPTV and VOD services to halt their sales this year. All targets agreed to pay settlements and other costs, totaling roughly 300,000 euros. While BREIN’s efforts are mostly directed at online sellers, the group agreed to provide training to local police to detect infringing devices in brick-and-mortar stores.

In recent years many pirates have moved from downloading to streaming and, as a result, anti-piracy groups have amended their strategies.

Backed by the major film studios, Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN has been one of the frontrunners in the area.

The organization booked a promiment victory against Filmspeler last year when the European Court of Justice ruled that it’s illegal to sell devices that are pre-configured to access copyright-infringing content.

Paired with the earlier GS Media ruling, which held that companies with a for-profit motive can’t knowingly link to copyright-infringing material, this provides a powerful enforcement tool.

With both decisions in hand, BREIN has contacted dozens of vendors that sell unauthorized services, urging them to stop.

This has been rather successful. This year alone, 75 sellers of IPTV and VOD subscriptions have settled their claims, resulting in settlements, penalties, and other costs totaling roughly 300,000 euros.

BREIN director Tim Kuik informs TorrentFreak that there are also a handful of pending cases where vendors have yet to sign a cease and desist order or agree to pay a settlement. If these efforts fail, these will be taken to court.

This legal threat is not a bluff. BREIN has already won civil verdicts against two vendors, Moviestreamer and Leaper, which were both ordered to shut down.

The anti-piracy group generally approaches online vendors but brick-and-mortar stores are also at risk. Last month, the police in The Hague seized a dozen IPTV boxes that were sold together with an IPTV subscription, for example.

The police took this action on their own initiative and BREIN wasn’t involved directly. However, the group is working with police to provide training on collecting infringement related evidence.

“BREIN is agreeing with police to provide training to detect and secure evidence of infringing trade by offline stores,” Kuik tells TorrentFreak.

Following the GS Media and Filmspeler verdicts, BREIN has tracked down 275 vendors of illegal streaming boxes. Roughly 50 of these stopped their activities before the anti-piracy group reached out.

“It is still a sensible idea to stop before you get caught because the owed amounts can increase quite a bit,” Kuik notes.

Google’s cellular service gets rebranded, offers support for iPhones

Project Fi is now Google Fi, and it sort of works on most Android and iOS devices.

Google’s cellular service gets rebranded, offers support for iPhones

Hot off the release of fully encrypted traffic earlier this month, Google's cellular service, Project Fi, is getting a new name and greatly expanded device support—although that device support comes with some caveats.

The rebrand is easy—Project Fi is losing its "Project" designation and is now just "Google Fi." There's a sweet new logo that you can see above, which renders "Fi" in a Google-colored line art that is increasingly becoming a trend in Google's iconography. Google spoiled this a bit by sending out "Google Fi" flyers (complete with the new logo) with some Pixel 3 purchases earlier this month, but now it's official. It looks like the Fi website has gotten redesigned, too.

Project Fi's biggest problem has always been the limited device support, but, along with the rebrand, Google says Fi "now works with the majority of Android devices and iPhones." This sounds like a big improvement from the handful of Fi-compatible devices, but that additional device support is a little complicated. First we need to talk about how Fi normally works.

Rivian debuts new US-made electric truck and SUV with 400-mile range

With $500 million in the bank and a factory in Illinois, Rivian readies for production.

Rivian

If Ford's decision earlier this year wasn't proof, then GM's announcement this week should remove all doubt: Americans are done with the sedan. Like it or not, the trucks and SUVs have won, and that bodes well for one of the newest entrants into the market, a startup called Rivian. This week, Rivian finally revealed its first two products, the R1T, an all-electric pickup truck starting at $61,500, and the R1S, a seven-seater electric SUV that starts at $65,000.

Both are ground-up designs, sharing a skateboard platform (common to most battery electric vehicles, with the battery pack living between the axles and underneath the passenger compartment). Rivian will offer three different sizes of battery in both vehicles; at launch, you can pick either 180kWh (and 400 miles/640km of range) or 135kWh (310 miles/500km) packs, with a third configuration of 105kWh (240 miles/390km) coming six months after production starts in 2020. The batteries are capable of recharging at up to 160kW on a DC fast charger and are also equipped with an 11kW onboard charger.
