BitTorrent and Tron Hope Other Clients Will Embrace ‘Paid’ Seeding

BitTorrent and Tron hope to successfully integrate blockchain technology with the popular file-sharing protocol. The idea of adding rewards and ‘payments’ to BitTorrent is controversial, but the team stresses that all blockchain enhancements will be open source and backward compatible. They also call on third-party torrent clients to embrace their plan.

It’s been only a few weeks since BitTorrent was officially aquired by Tron, a relatively new cryptocurrency.

Both companies were built around decentralization, which makes for a good match. However, it doesn’t stop there.

BitTorrent and Tron plan to integrate blockchain technology into future releases of their torrent clients. In short, they want to make it possible for users to ‘earn’ tokens by seeding. At the same time, others can ‘bid’ tokens to speed up their downloads.

The new plan is dubbed “Project Atlas” and BitTorrent currently has seven people working on it full-time. In theory, the incentives will increase total seeding capacity, improving the health of the torrent ecosystem.

“By adding tokens we’ll make it so that you can effectively earn per seeding and create incentives for users not only to seed longer but to dedicate more of their bandwidth and storage overall,” Project Atlas lead Justin Knoll says.

The idea to merge the blockchain with file-sharing technology isn’t new. Joystream, previously implemented a similar idea and Upfiring is also working on incentivized sharing. BitTorrent itself also considered it before Tron came into the picture.

“Even before the Tron acquisition, our R&D team was looking at ways to add blockchain based incentives to the protocol. Now with the addition of Tron’s expertise, we can accelerate that effort,” Knoll says.

It remains unclear when the project will be ready for the public, but this week the team announced some further details. In particular, BitTorrent and Tron stress that there won’t be any need for BitTorrent users to change their current habits.

The BitTorrent protocol will always remain open and Project Atlas will be implemented as a series of optional protocol extensions. These will be available for anyone to use, much like uTorrent’s previous uTP extension.

This means that users of third-party BitTorrent clients can still download from and seed to blockchain enhanced clients, and vice versa.

“If you want to keep using your current client, it will still work with project Atlas clients. If you don’t want to bid or earn tokens per seeding, you don’t need to,” Knoll clarifies.

Project Atlas

While backward compatibility is a major upside, it seems likely that new clients will prioritize each other, at least in some instances. After all, that’s a requirement to speed up torrents.

BitTorrent says it will start implementing the technology in its desktop clients, such as uTorrent. The next step is mobile. In addition, the company encourages developers of other BitTorrent clients to follow suit.

“We’ll release the details of our implementation and encourage third-party clients and the whole ecosystem to implement this,” Knoll says.

The developer of the third-party torrent client Frostwire previously showed his interest in the idea late August. He asked BitTorrent and Tron whether the technology would be public but never received an answer.

Speaking with TorrentFreak, developer Angel Leon confirmed his interest.

“It’s something we were interested in and that we think is necessary to fulfill a vision of a decentralized Apple Store/Google Play/Amazon Music|Video competitor with BitTorrent as the transport mechanism,” Leon told us.

However, the developments come too late for Frostwire, as the torrent client just shut down. Whether other client developers are also interested, remains a question for now.

In any case, BitTorrent and Tron stress that any changes will be backwards compatible. The protocol and its extensions remain open, the clients will remain free of charge, and there is absolutely no mining involved.

More information about Project Atlas’ plans is expected to be unveiled in a few hours, during a live presentation.

Porsche debuts new $800,000 racer inspired by the iconic 935 Le Mans car

Porsche will build 77 of the new cars, but where can they race?

Porsche

For the second time in a few weeks, the Monterey area in California is playing host to an amazing automotive gathering. In August it was Car Week, probably the biggest gathering of rare classics and concepts on the planet. This week, it's the turn of just one marque, because it's Porsche's Rennsport Reunion. The event, held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, is a celebration of Porsche's racing heritage over the past decades. And the car maker used the event to debut a new race car inspired by one of its greatest hits—it's a reborn 935.

The original 935 was a 911-based racer that first appeared in 1976 and went on to have an illustrious career in the late 1970s. Distinctive bodywork gave it a much wider track thanks to massively flared side extensions, a characteristic flat nose, and in the case of the 935/78 for the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans, a massive whale tail at the rear. The last of those led to the car's enduring nickname: Moby Dick.

What 61,000 hidden structures reveal about Maya civilization

Lidar images suggest connections between cities but also large-scale warfare.

Earlier this year, a team of archaeologists announced the discovery of more than 61,000 long-lost Maya roads, fortresses, drainage canals, and buildings hidden beneath the dense green canopy of northern Guatemala’s tropical forest. The findings were the result of an airborne laser, or lidar, survey of 2,144 square kilometers of the Maya Biosphere Reserve. Now, archaeologists are starting to piece together what all the data actually says about Maya civilization. The picture emerging from beneath the jungle canopy is of a much more complex political and economic landscape than we previously realized.

“In February, you were really getting our first impressions as we began exploring the data, which was filmed by National Geographic. The Science article is about putting actual numbers behind those first impressions,” Ithaca College archaeologist Tom Garrison told Ars Technica.

A network of cities

Garrison, with archaeologists Marcello Canuto and Francisco Estrada-Belli of Tulane University and colleagues, used the lidar survey data to estimate that a Mayan population of between 7 million and 11 million people lived in the central Maya Lowlands (parts of the Yucatan, Guatemala, and Belize) in the bustling Late Classic period between 650 and 800 CE. With 29 structures per square kilometer in the survey area, and evidence from earlier excavations to suggest how many of those structures might have been houses, the team calculated an average of 80 to 120 people per square kilometer. The overall number lines up well with estimates from previous studies, even though it was derived independently.

Apple’s watchOS 5.0.1 addresses bug that may prevent Watches from charging

It’s the first minor update pushed out to all Watches running watchOS 5.

Almost two weeks after watchOS 5 came out, Apple has pushed out its first update for the wearable operating system. WatchOS 5.0.1 doesn't bring any new features to Apple Watches, but it does fix a few problems surrounding exercise minutes, stand credit, and charging that some users may have experienced since upgrading their Watch's software.

In watchOS 5, a "small number of users" reported seeing an unwarranted increase in exercise minutes, presumably in their exercise rings in the Activity app. According to some users online, they saw their green exercise ring fill up very quickly throughout the course of the day despite the amount of time they spent exercising or tracking workouts. Inversely, some users didn't receive Stand credit in the afternoons, meaning the Watch either didn't recognize or didn't record when users stood up for half of the day.

The third and final problem addressed in watchOS 5.0.1 is one that prevented Apple Watches from charging. Apple doesn't provide details about when or why this may have happened, but it's a serious issue that the company likely wanted to address before it affected too many users.
