PETA roasts Impossible Burger for rat tests, suggests patties cause cancer

Tests with 188 rats started food fight, but PETA lobbed ridiculous health claim.

The oft controversial animal-rights group PETA has beef with the ostensibly animal-friendly Impossible Burger.

PETA, short for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is fired up over the fact that the vegetarian burger’s maker, Impossible Foods, tested the safety of its faux patty on animals. Impossible Foods has openly noted that it conducted animal experiments—involving a total of 188 rats—to convince the Food and Drug Administration that the burger’s key, blood-like ingredient qualified as a safe food additive. The company was after a controversial FDA designation called “generally recognized as safe” or GRAS. The animals were sacrificed after the testing.

In a blistering blog post, PETA claimed the testing was “voluntary” and that Impossible Foods conducted the test after “disregarding advice from a PETA scientist who said that there’s no need to hurt and kill animals to test its burger.” To further scorch the burger’s name, PETA made the dubious suggestion that the burger could increase risks of cancer in consumers.

Short seller sues Tesla, Elon Musk, claiming buyout tweets were fraudulent

Expect more lawsuits if Musk can’t prove he has funding lined up.

Three days after Elon Musk tweeted that he had "funding secured" to take Tesla private, we still don't know who, if anyone, has agreed to provide the billions of dollars needed to buy out the company. But plaintiffs' lawyers aren't waiting any longer for Musk to provide more details.

On Friday, stock trader Kalman Isaacs filed a class action lawsuit arguing that Musk's Tuesday tweets constituted securities fraud. The lawsuit, first reported by Reuters, appears to be the first one claiming that Musk's Tuesday tweets violated federal securities law.

At the time of Musk's tweet, Isaacs was short at least 3,000 shares of Tesla stock. That means that at some point prior to Musk's tweet, Isaacs had borrowed Tesla shares and sold them, betting that the price would fall and he would eventually be able to buy them back at a discount, pocketing the difference.

Demonoid’s Torrents and Owner Are Missing in Action

Over the past week, Demonoid’s users have been unable to download anything from the torrent tracker. Instead of the usual stream of torrents, they see a “no torrents found” notice. While this appears to be a relatively small technical issue there is reason for concern, as the site’s founder is missing in action .

As one of the oldest torrent communities online, the Demonoid tracker has gone though many ups and downs.

The site has suffered long stretches of downtime, faced legal threats, dealt with internal struggles, but survived nonetheless.

Earlier this year the tracker processed its ten millionth user registration. Things were relatively calm and the original founder, Deimos, was back in charge, working on several improvements.

“I want to to see the community we had back. Don’t know if it’s possible but that’s my aim,” Deimos told us last year when the site started to recover from a long stint of downtime.

The community indeed started to grow again, but roughly a week ago Demonoid ran into what appears to be a technical issue. Suddenly, the torrents started to ‘disappear’ from the site.

Instead of seeing the usual flood of fresh content, users saw a “no torrents found” message.

Strangely enough, the top torrents list is working normally. Also, torrents may occasionally appear and disappear after several refreshes, as shown here, but there’s clearly something wrong.

While this could be a relatively simple database issue, there’s a more serious concern. It’s not just the torrents that are missing in action, Deimos is also unreachable, even for members of the site’s staff.

“Deimos is nowhere to be found for the last few days and I can’t reach him,” Demonoid staffer Phaze1G says, noting that it’s a major problem.

Phaze1G says he last spoke to Deimos over a week ago and hasn’t been able to get a hold of him since. Demonoid’s founder was dealing with some personal issues and a business trip, but the lack of communication is unusual.

TorrentFreak also reached out to Deimos a few days ago through our usual channel, but we haven’t heard back since.

While there’s reason for concern, without more information, there’s no reason to panic. Phaze1G informs us that all torrents are still showing up in the test version of the new design, so they’re on the servers somewhere.

This means that there’s likely a small issue that needs to be fixed. However, Deimos is the only person with server-side access, so people must wait for his return. Meanwhile, Phaze1G cautions users not to spread any wild rumors.

“The site is not hacked, stolen, compromised, FBI / CIA conspiracy, and so on,” he notes.

More ROM Sites to Close Following Nintendo’s Recent Crackdown

An eighteen year old site offering Nintendo game ROMs has decided not to do so anymore, thanks to a recent crackdown on ROM sites by Nintendo.

ROMs are digital copies of games that once existed in physical form, either on cartridges or discs. With the use of an emulator, gamers can play these ROMs on their PCs, phones or tablets, complete with original graphics and sound. Many gamers believe that the existence of emulators and ROMs help preserve classic games from disappearing.

However, there has always existed copyright issues with emulators and in particular ROMs. While some of the publishers of these games have long faded into obscurity, many are still owned by existing companies, or have been licensed by companies like Nintendo. For a long time, these companies have avoided suing ROM sites outright, instead filing removal notices for individual ROMs. This strategy appears to have shifted in recent times.

These actions have led EmuParadise, one of the oldest ROM sites around, to remove all ROMs from their site.

The decision comes after Nintendo launched lawsuits against fellow ROM sites, LoveROMs and LoveRetro, both of which have been forced to completely shut down as they face the legal might of the Japanese company.

In a statement that has since been removed, the founder of EmuParadise, MasJ, explained the reasons behind the preemptive move.

"Many of you are aware that the situation with regards to emulation sites has been changing recently. What you probably don’t know is that we at EmuParadise have been dealing with similar issues for all 18 years of our existence," wrote MasJ.

"From receiving threatening letters in the early days to our hosts suddenly shutting down our servers due to complaints, we’ve seen it all. We’ve always complied with takedown requests but as you can see, that is no guarantee of anything."

MasJ was keen to note that his site has served many over the years, and not all are "cheapskate pirates" that companies like Nintendo like to paint them as.

"We’ve had emails from soldiers at war saying that the only way they got through their days was to be lost in the retro games that they played from when they were children. We’ve got emails from brothers who have lost their siblings to cancer and were able to find solace in playing the games they once did as children. There are countless stories like these," wrote MasJ.
