Columbia Pictures Nukes “Holmes and Watson” Posters Off The Internet

Millions of Sherlock Holmes fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the upcoming “Holmes and Watson” movie. A few days ago an early ‘teaser’ appeared in the form of a movie poster. However, movie distributor Columbia Pictures is now sending DMCA notices to scrub any and all copies from the web, including dozens of tweets. But what exactly is the problem?

The DMCA is a particularly useful tool for copyright holders who want to make sure that infringing copies of their work are not widely distributed.

Whether it’s a copy of a pirated song, an ebook, or a photo, the DMCA covers it all.

The majority of the takedown requests filed on an average day are fairly mundane. However, there are those that raise eyebrows, which includes the recent efforts of Columbia Pictures.

The movie studio is planning to distribute the upcoming ‘Holmes and Watson‘ movie, a highly anticipated release among Sherlock fans. So, when the first promotional poster appeared online a few days ago, they jumped all over it.

The poster, featuring Will Ferrell and John Reilly as Holmes and Watson, shows both men signaling their initials. On top of that is a large red title that reads “Holmies,” as shown in this Reddit post.

Following a series of news articles, the poster was shared on Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter. This isn’t something out of the ordinary, as the same happens with other prominent movies. What’s unusual, however, is that the posters have begun to ‘disappear.’

Several news sites that reported on and linked to the poster have removed the image and Slashfilm even took the entire article down. Around the same time, several copies shared on Twitter disappeared too.

Gone

As it turns out, Twitter removed the promotional posters following a DMCA notice. TorrentFreak received a copy of a takedown request which anti-piracy company Entura sent to Twitter on behalf of Columbia Pictures.

Some of the reported uploads

The unusual takedowns haven’t gone unnoticed. Twitter user Sloth Mom has been particularly vocal after one of her tweets was targeted.

“Apparently Columbia Pictures didn’t like me tweeting the poster of the upcoming Holmes and Watson movie with the comment ‘I’m here for it’ for… Reasons? Good going Columbia, now anyone seeing that tweet won’t know what I’m here for,” she Tweeted.

This sparked a lively debate with people condemning Columbia Pictures. But, while it’s clear that Columbia Pictures doesn’t want the poster to be promoted, the question that remains is why?

TorrentFreak reached out to Entura for more details on the matter. At the time of writing we have yet to hear back, leaving us with little more than speculation.

There are of course many possible explanations. The most likely option we’ve seen thus far refers to the “Holmies” title that’s on the original poster. Apparently, that term is also used for ‘groupies‘ of the Aurora shooter James Holmes.

“Err, ‘Holmies’ also means ‘fans of the kid who shot up that DARK KNIGHT theater’ so they might be freaking out and try to scrub the poster from existence,” Twitter user Standing Leaf writes.

Holmies…

If that’s the case, Paramount Pictures is using the DMCA requests with an ulterior motive. Understandable, perhaps, but the affected recipients who risk losing their account over too many strikes won’t like that.

“Even if that’s true, it’s a disgusting overreach to threaten people’s social media accounts over sharing a promotional poster,” Sloth Mom puts it.

Again, without an official explanation, this all remains guesswork. Perhaps a good detective can get to the bottom of it though.

Intel launches Whiskey and Amber Lakes: Kaby Lake with better Wi-Fi, USB

Intel upgrades the integrated chipset, but the rest of the processor is the same.

Intel has launched its latest mobile processors: six new chips designed for Ultrabooks and other thin-and-light systems. Three 15W U-series chips are codenamed Whiskey Lake, and another three 5W Y-series parts are codenamed Amber Lake.

Model Cores/Threads Clock base/boost/GHz Level 3 cache/MB TDP/W DDR4/MHz LPDDR3/MHz
Whiskey Lake
i7-8565U 4/8 1.8/4.6 8 15 2400 2133
i5-8265U 4/8 1.6/3.9 6 15 2400 2133
i3-8165U 2/4 2.1/3.9 4 15 2400 2133
Amber Lake
i7-8500Y 2/4 1.5/4.2 4 5 1866
i5-8200Y 2/4 1.3/3.9 4 5 1866
m3-‍8100Y 2/4 1.1/3.4 4 5 1866

The CPU parts of these new processors are the same Kaby Lake Refresh parts as Intel launched a year ago—just with slightly tweaked clock speeds. The i7-8565U, for example, at 1.8/4.6GHz, is just a slightly uprated replacement for the i7-8550U at 1.8/4.0GHz. Due to this similarity, the new parts retain the "8th generation" branding of last year's parts. This similarity also means that the new chips don't include hardware fixes for the Meltdown or Spectre issues.

The differences lie in the on-package chipset. The U-series and Y-series processors integrate the chipset onto the processor package: the CPU is connected to the chipset by an interface that's comparable to a PCIe 3.0 x4 connection. The chipsets provide USB, audio, network, SATA, and other connectivity.

HDR10+ is coming to new Samsung and Panasonic TVs, but good luck finding content

The new format promises high quality but without Dolby Vision’s extra cost.

Certain Panasonic and Samsung TVs just became some of the first to support the new HDR10+ HDR standard thanks to a new firmware update. The update was rolled out to "select 2018 television models," according to a press release that was sent out today.

HDR10+ was developed by HDR10+ Technologies—a joint venture by 20th Century Fox, Panasonic, and Samsung—to offer an improvement to the existing HDR10 standard and compete directly with Dolby Vision. Like Dolby Vision, HDR10+ allows content creators to include dynamic metadata in each frame rather than simply applying the same approach to every frame in the scene.

Samsung, which is the leading driver of the HDR10+ standard, has argued that HDR10+ will allow film directors' visions to be more accurately represented on HDR TVs, because filmmakers who master their films in HDR can fine-tune each scene to their hearts' content. Dolby has made similar claims about Dolby Vision.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 Review: An OK chapter in one of gaming’s great sagas

Even one of the Yakuza series’ lowest points is still worth your time.

Enlarge / That's a bit of that Maji-magic right there. (credit: Sega)

Yakuza 2 is a slightly strange chapter in Sega’s charming crime drama series. It doesn’t quite capture the accidental magic of the first game or the blend of soap-opera drama and zany side quests that were perfected when Yakuza went HD with its third chapter.

It drags series lead Kazuma Kiryu—the lovable, titular criminal—into a more straightforward action-movie plot. There’s a car chase, ticking time bombs, a lady love interest (the only one in the series), and enough revenge schemes to fuel a whole season of television.

But now Yakuza Kiwami 2’s slightly forgettable bombast has been cleaned up for the PlayStation 4. And it cleans up pretty well! Like the previous Kiwami, this is a full-on remake of the PS2 original. This time, it’s all running in Yakuza 6’s Dragon Engine—bringing with it the graphical bells and mechanical whistles of that most recent release. Combat is more physics-driven than most other games in the series, and the progression system forces you to engage with Kiwami 2’s fictional cities of Sotenbori and Kamurocho more than usual in order to level up. Oh, and it can get really hard.

Researchers ID genes that could make you more likely to try cannabis

Effects are tiny, also linked to risk taking and openness to experience.

Laws regarding marijuana use are changing even as scientists are still trying to understand why people use it and the overall effects of using it. Now, a study is wading in by examining how genetics influences people's tendency to try pot. But the study raises nearly as many questions as it answers, and the overall effect of genes appears to be extremely small.

Genes and weed

This isn't the first study to look at marijuana use, but the history here is a bit murky. Many of the past studies are small, and they've looked at different things: some at whether a person has ever tried the drug and others at factors that influence whether a person becomes a heavy user. Still, twin studies have indicated that genetics plays a large role in determining whether someone is likely to try the drug at some point in their lives.

The new work is largely a follow-up on that, involving a search for the specific genetic factors that influence what's termed "lifetime use"—the decision to try pot at least once in someone's life. The researchers behind it are a mix of 23andMe staff and members of the International Cannabis Consortium (which is less interesting than it sounds). Both groups focus on scanning the entire genome for variations linked to specific traits. For this, they combined 23andMe data with several public genetics resources that have asked their participants about cannabis use. Combined, these data sources included about 185,000 individuals, making this the largest study of its kind.
