YouTube Launches “Copyright Match” Tool to Protect Initial Uploaders

YouTube will release a new tool to help initial uploaders to take action against those who duplicate and re-upload their content without permission. Copyright Match, which will be available to high-traffic users initially, will alert users to new uploads of their work while allowing them to take a range of actions, including communicating with the uploader or taking content down.

Millions of YouTube channel operators use the platform to distribute their own creations, from their latest musical compositions, to tutorials, reviews, or news segments.

While most remain unique, many of the most popular creators are plagued by people who rip their content from the site before re-uploading it to their own YouTube channel. It’s a quick way of grabbing thousands of views with minimal effort while denying creators clicks that would otherwise generate them revenue.

With the vast majority of YouTube content available free to all, there are few excuses for this kind of behavior and for many of the larger channels, it’s become a real thorn in the side. Now, however, YouTube says it’s releasing its new ‘Copyright Match’ tool to mitigate the problem.

“We know how frustrating it is when your content is uploaded to other channels without your permission and how time consuming it can be to manually search for these re-uploads,” says Fabio Magagna, Product Manager for the Copyright Match tool.

“We currently provide a number of ways for copyright owners to protect their work, but we’ve heard from creators that we should do more and we agree.”

Copyright Match, which uses similar technology to YouTube’s Content ID system, is designed to detect re-uploads of content to other channels. Once a user uploads a video, YouTube will scan subsequent uploads to see if they are the same or “very similar” to the original.

If a match is found, the original uploader will receive a notification in his or her YouTube panel which will give them several options.

The first option for a user with a ‘match’ notification is to do nothing, something that may come in handy for someone who simply wants to spread a message as far and wide as possible.

The second possibility is to get in touch with the secondary uploader. This could lead to a productive discussion (such as a gentle request to remove the video, perhaps) or, quite possibly, something a little more aggressive.

Finally, users can simply ask that YouTube takes the video down, an option that comes with options of its own.

“When you request removal you can do so with or without a 7-day delay to allow the uploader to correct the issue themselves. Takedown requests will be reviewed to make sure they comply with YouTube’s copyright policies,” Magagna explains.

While YouTube will carry out its own checks, the company advises users to review each incidence of ‘Copyright Match‘ to ensure that they do indeed own the rights to the matched content and that the copy infringes on their rights.

It’s important to note that in some cases, a match might not necessarily mean that an infringement has taken place.

“You should not file a copyright takedown request for content that you do not own exclusively, such as public domain content. You should also consider whether the matched content could be considered fair use or could be subject to some other exceptions to copyright and hence not require permission for reuse,” YouTube notes.

Magagna, who is also heavily involved with YouTube’s Content ID system, says that the Copyright Match tool will begin rolling out in the coming days to protect channels with substantial numbers of subscribers. Longer term, however, it should become available to all.

“Next week, we’ll start rolling this tool out to creators with more than 100k subscribers. As this is a powerful feature, we will monitor usage closely and will continue to expand over the coming months with the long-term goal of making it available to every creator in the YouTube Partner program,” Magagna concludes.

Uber lays off 100 safety drivers as it scales back self-driving tests

Uber is laying off its safety drivers in Pittsburgh and San Francisco—about 100 people in total. It's the latest sign that Uber is scaling back its testing operations as it tries to move beyond the March crash that killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona.

Uber's testing operations have been suspended nationwide since that fatality. It already laid off its safety drivers in the Phoenix metropolitan area—previously the company's most significant testing location. And the company decided not to renew its permit to test self-driving cars in California.

But Uber says it's still aiming to resume testing in the Pittsburgh area. While about 100 Uber safety drivers are officially being laid off, Uber expects many of them to apply for 55 newly created "mission specialist" jobs doing similar work. Previously, Uber had separate teams testing on public roads and on private test tracks. Now, Uber wants a single team of drivers to perform testing in both cases and to provide them with additional training to better aid Uber engineers in improving the company's self-driving software.

Tesla sold 200,000 cars in the US, so the $7,500 tax credit is going away

The full incentive remains for 2018, but halves then halves again in 2019.

Well folks, it's official: Tesla has now sold and delivered more than 200,000 electric vehicles here in the US. That's an important milestone for the EV maker, because it means that the $7,500 IRS tax credit that buyers have been eligible for will soon be a thing of the past.

Speculation that Tesla had hit the 200,000 mark for US sales has been rampant, particularly in the wake of the company's recent statement regarding production numbers. In the second quarter of 2018, it says it produced 53,339 vehicles, a 55 percent increase over Q1 2018. That big increase was in large part down to the company finally finding its feet with regards to the Model 3 production lines. More than half its Q2 output (28,571 cars) were Model 3s; the remainder were Model S and Model X EVs.

However, it was unclear at the time of Tesla's announcement just how many of those cars were actually bound for US customers. In the past, Tesla has often focused one month a quarter on delivering vehicles to countries outside of the US, and it was thought likely that the company was doing everything possible to ensure it didn't break the 200,000 US sales mark before the end of Q2. But on Thursday morning the company updated the page on its website dealing with EV incentives in light of reaching this milestone.

Epic ups Unreal Marketplace creators’ pay well above industry standard

Increase from 70% to 88% revenue share also applies retroactively

Unreal Engine maker Epic announced this morning that it's increasing the rate paid to creators who make and sell reusable art, sound, engines, animations, and effects to other developers on the company's Unreal Marketplace. The increase, from 70 percent of the sales price to a new 88 percent pay rate, will also apply retroactively, with additional payments doled out for all sales since the Unreal Marketplace's 2014 launch.

The move seems designed to attract more attention to the Unreal Marketplace and away from competing asset clearinghouses like the Unity Asset Store, Game Dev Market, TurboSquid, and others that offer creators an industry-standard 70 percent (or less) of the total sale price to creators. Major game platforms such as Steam, the iTunes App Store, and all three major console-makers also offer developers 70 percent of revenue from game sales.

Epic says the number of sellers on the Unreal Marketplace has grown by 30 percent in the first half of 2018, now representing 1,500 creators and more than 5,000 "curated products." But it's still quite a bit smaller than the Unity Asset Store, which launched in 2010 and has grown to include over 36,000 assets as of last year and over 3,600 creators back in 2014. And while Epic says 8 million assets have been downloaded from the Unreal Marketplace since 2014, Unity says it was generating 7.2 million asset downloads per year as of 2014.
