BitTorrent Inc. Officially Confirms Acquisition by TRON Foundation

BitTorrent Inc, the parent company behind the popular file-sharing client uTorrent, has confirmed its acquisition by the TRON Foundation. This means that the company, which once was one of Silicon Valley’s hottest newcomers, will now officially merge with the cryptocurrency startup.

In May, TF broke the news that Justin Sun, the entrepreneur behind the popular cryptocurrency TRON, was in the process of acquiring BitTorrent Inc.

The San-Francisco based file-sharing company confirmed the interest from Sun and while details leaked here and there, there was no official confirmation from the parties involved. That changed today.

This morning both BitTorrent Inc. and the TRON Foundation confirmed the acquisition. This means that the file-sharing company, with uTorrent as its flagship software, will be part of the TRON team going forward.

“We are excited to announce that TRON has officially closed its acquisition of BitTorrent,” BitTorrent Inc. just announced.

“With this acquisition, BitTorrent will continue to provide high quality services for over 100M users around the world. We believe that joining the TRON network will further enhance BitTorrent and accelerate our mission of creating an Internet of options, not rules.”

BitTorrent will keep its current product line intact and will be operating from TRON’s San Francisco office going forward. Both teams will merge and together they plan to take the technology behind TRON to a new level.

BitTorrent + TRON

TRON’s Justin Sun sees BitTorrent as a great fit for the foundation’s goal to decentralize the web. The legacy BitTorrent protocol will remain, but TRON hopes to bring new life to it.

“The BitTorrent acquisition embodies TRON’s ‘All-In Decentralization’ strategy. TRON and BitTorrent share the same vision for a decentralized Web. I believe BitTorrent will gain new life from integrating into the TRON ecosystem, and TRON will continue BitTorrent’s protocol legacy.”

It’s unclear how BitTorrent technology will be integrated into the TRON network. No concrete details have been announced but both parties have decentralization as their main pillars, and that won’t change.

“With the integration of BitTorrent, TRON aims to liberate the Internet from the stranglehold of large corporations, give data rights back to the individual, and reignite the early 21st century vision of a free, transparent, decentralized network to connect the world, because the internet belongs to the people,” Sun notes.

No financial details relating to the acquisition have been released but it was previously reported that Sun had agreed to pay $140 million for BitTorrent Inc. and its assets.

While the acquisition has been causing shockwaves in the already volatile crypto market, BitTorrent’s users have been relatively quiet. Aside from a few confused uTorrent users, who feared that their clients would turn into cryptocurrency miners, the issue has not been widely discussed.

Those worried users can rest assured, though, as the uTorrent team stresses that they have no intention to change, or mine.

“We wish to reiterate that BitTorrent has no plans to change what we do or charge for the services we provide. We have no plans to enable mining of cryptocurrency now or in the future,” the uTorrent team said previously.

A quick word on which versions of Mega Man X Legacy Collection to get—or avoid

Multiple versions, multiple platforms, multiple bugs.

Today's launch of the Mega Man X Legacy Collection series is a biggie in the retro-anthology craze. At its best, Capcom's "X" fork of Mega Man puts a giant exclamation point at the end of the "action-platformer" genre. Basically, if you crave a brutally tough mix of high-speed jumps, pesky enemies, overcharged weapons, and incredible sprite artwork, this series' entries on SNES and PS1 are all you need.

Thus, the Legacy Collection seems like a no-brainer purchase, and I expected to type as much in a brief, "X gon' give it to you" reiteration of the series' classic status. Sadly, that's not quite the case. After testing the anthologies' multiple versions on four platforms, we're here to clarify if, and how, you should take the MMX plunge.

Report: Trump admin has plan to end California’s emissions standards power

The Trump administration will propose a plan to freeze emissions standards at 2020 levels while undercutting California's legal waiver to set emissions standards that are stricter than those set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), according to three sources that Bloomberg spoke to.

The news of the Trump administration's plan was leaked in late May, but Bloomberg spoke to people who had seen the plans recently. The proposed rollback of emissions standards is not expected to change substantially.

The Trump administration's EPA has spent the past year and a half laying the groundwork to roll back emissions standards that were finalized by the Obama administration's EPA during President Obama's final month in office, although the rules had been years in the making. Obama's plan would have required automakers to build cars that are increasingly more fuel efficient every few years until 2025.

Declining cryptocurrency prices are making graphics cards affordable again

The falling price of ether has pushed down graphics card prices.

About a year ago, graphics card prices started to go crazy. Then in early 2018, things got even crazier. The price of a Radeon RX 570—a mid-range graphics card popular for cryptocurrency mining—soared from under $200 in April 2017 to over $450 in February 2018. Over the same period, a high-end RX 580 soared from around $230 in April 2017 to as much as $540 in February 2018.

But since then, graphics-card prices have been falling steadily, according to data collected by PC Part Picker. An RX 570 fell to around $350 by the end of April. And you can now get one for a bit more than $300. An RX 580 now goes for around $330.

When I visited my local Best Buy back in January, the store was asking for $529.99 for a Radeon 580 with 8GB of memory—and the store didn't even have them in stock at that price. By late April, the same card was available from Best Buy's website for $419.99. Now, the same card is selling for $339.99.
